My friend and I are doing the campaign from the beginning, and having quite a bit of fun doing it. We have everything setup to go along smoothly, as in who will handle the loot, who handles the NPC interaction and so on and so forth.
However, there is one major issue we can't seem to alleviate, and it is that we are unable to chat during cutscenes. We can't discuss how we want to handle the dialogue, and it's a blight on an otherwise perfect experience.
So my question is.. how would we go about communicating during NPC dialogue and cutscenes, and how could we manage this without a messenger service running in windowed mode?
Also, would like to avoid mods of any kind, if they ruin a game in progress.
(I searched for this, but the search function doesn't seem to work for me, sorry.)

Use one of the various external voice chat programs? You could role play in character still with your speech, might even add an extra element to it.

Voice chat isn't really an option at the moment.

Then I guess there is no way to do this. Figured we might have been overlooking something obvious...

It may be immersion breaking, but can't you use something like IM or IRC on standby and when you have to discuss something, use that? Like in conversations, you automatically window out to your chat window (whatever it is you're using) and communicate, then check back into the conversation in NWN2 and go from there?
I know that's a hassle, but other than that, VoiP (Skype, Ventrilo, etc.) or using a phone to communicate, there's no other way that I know of. If voice chat isn't an option, IRC or Instant Messaging might work for you.

Yep, we will probably use a messaging service. Which is okay, we both use dual monitors. It just wasn't ideal if there was an easier option we didn't know about.
Thanks for the replies.

Xfire has the ability to allow you to use their IM while ingame, and it come on the NWN2 install disk
.
Seer the product tour Instant message ingame
Xfire has lots of other nice features as well including voice when and if you ever want to use it.

A friend and I have played NWN 2 off and on (OC and MoTB) for several years now, only co,pleting MoTB about a month ago in multi-player.
What we did was use IM's to quickly discuss options when locked in conversation. We did not find it particularly immersion breaking since we used IMs to set up the sessions and IMs to discuss the events after the session. It works very well as long as you don't spend to much time in IM during the game.
