Vaalyah wrote this in another thread

1) please, guys, could you avoid so much abbreviations? For those who aren't English and who has not read D&D manuals in English, reading AB, PWS, RWOT and all the others implies not understanding a single word of the post. Maybe, if you have to repeat the word several time, at the beginning of the post, please, write something like "OC=official campaign", so at least we could follow your words. That would be very kind, thank you

I have to admit I get lost in this too, I'm getting AB and BAB but a lot flys over my head on first read.

Is there a kind person out there prepared to make a list of abreviations for the non english speakers (and me). Or if this exists anywhere perhaps a link.

This could be in the form of a post which all contribute to or one individual who is prepared to take on the task. Perhaps others could add if they miss anything. In any case we need a first post with all the info in for this to be of greatest value I think fist posts can be updated am I right DNO. So perhaps we could start a post and one person could manage all the new abbreviations being added.

Anyways if this is deemed a good idea then a volunteer is required to start it all off. If it has been done before then a link would be good.

Cheers,

PJ

FWIW, Google is a great resource for decoding acronyms.

Second best is the ****** Jack decoder ring. (I'm kidding :P)

Well, I don't even know what an RWOT is, but theere are the basics which are mostly stats and things:

AB - Attack Bonus (how likely you are to hit)
BAB - Base Attack Bonus
AC - Armour class (how unlikely you are to be hit)
DR - Damage Reduction (given as A/B where A is the amount, B is what ignores it, e.g. 5/magic)
DC - Difficulty class (difficulty of making a skill check or saving throw, usually)
HP - Hit points
HD - Hit die (basically, levels)
CL - Caster Level
SR - Spell Resistance
XP - Experience (can be for Expansion Pack)

Then there are ones for abilities (they're easy, STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA) and for classes (given here).

NWN - Neverwinter Nights (oh really?)
OC - Official campaign
MotB - Mask of the Betrayer
SoZ - Storm of Zehir

While we're at it...
SoU - Shadows of Undrentide (NWN1 expansion 1)
HotU - Hordes of the Underdark (NWN1 expansion 2)

OM - Overland Map

Oh Mokah beat me!

But there are abbreviations for every feat and spell (with more than one word), obviously. However, most of them are only ever used what taking about that feat/spell, unless it's a very common one, like:

(G/P)TWF - (Greater/Perfect) Two Weapon Fighting
MM - Magic Missile
etc

RTWP = Real Time With Pause
OOC = Out of Character
AC = Armor class

mmm, that's about it. I tend to agree for the sake of posting in open forums. Not everyone here is a D&D nerd geek or aficionado. Therefore, when bandying about acronyms and abbreviations, it is good journalistic policy (and for the sake of clarity in writing) that the first time you use an acronym or abbreviation, you actually use the words they stand for first, then place in parentheses the letters that will be used to sub for the whole word or phrase.

Then after that, you're good to go. That's how it really ought to be done, even in open forums where a goodly number of folks already know what you're spouting when you spill your alphabet soup.

Personally, I try to give the full name of each TLA before using it, except when it's something really common like AC, when I'm sometimes lazy. ;-)

Yeah, it's funny how you don't notice an abbreviation you might think you'd know. I don't have Mask myself, though, so I never play an RWoT anyway (and I would probably have written it like that, with a lower case "O" - not that it matters, but it can make it harder to spot). Some people are OTT with TLAs though...

A neat and sticky (and maybe more complete) version of this would be good, imo.
