Total Control - Engineer + Dominate

And for the geth shield boost buff, I'd rather have the energy drain shield buff on. It has so many advantages and (I don't know the exact numbers) it still boosts your max shield for quite a while

With the recent Firepower pack, I think things that Shield boosting powers are becoming more useful. Together with the Locust, these new weapons provide a good boost offensive output. Unlike tech or biotic powers, where you pop back into cover immediately and wait for a cooldown, weapons do more damage the longer you're exposed firing. Anything that lets you stay out in the open longer will also let you do more damage-which in turn reduces the damage you take as you kill enemies faster. On Insanity difficulty, it can make a noticeable difference.

Having AI Hacking and Dominate might sound redundant, but there are plenty of missions with mixed mechs/organics, and turning a Loki/Fenris instantaneously against his allies is pretty funny, and often useful. Plus, it keeps in line with the idea that you have a power to control any given situation. Remember, Total Control.
To be honest, I would only ever respec for Geth missions (if at all, this build demolishes Geth just fine). Then I would take Energy Drain and perhaps Level 4 AI Hacking (probably Improved). That way your hacked mech buddy can also be your personal shield battery. However, again, rank 3 Hack is all you'll really ever need. I just did the last Blue Suns mission, and re-applying rank 3 Hack over and over to the first YMIR took the second one down to half its Armor.
I honestly don't see where the extra points would go anyways. Overload, I guess. Maybe Cryo Blast, but Cryo Blast is only ever situationally useful and mostly just for flavor (the shatter effect never gets old).
I do know I love casting with this build. I always have a power on hand that can be used no matter what (defenses up, defenses down, different enemy types, etc.) I switched to my Mattock Engineer just so I could sit back and idly shoot bosses while my powers wreak havoc.

Okay, I recently used one of my old Engineer saves to try out the Firepower Pack. As I've never used the Dominate bonus power on an Engineer before (I've only used it on the Infiltrator, with less than stellar results), I wanted to give it a try... and holy crap, the Engineer becomes a freaking monster once you've gotten the playstyle down.
I gave the Dominating Engineer a try and it's great; you're truly the ME2 Master of Puppets

Nice vid. I played one similarly ages ago. It's a lot of fun. Try using the assault drone on the pretorian. It doesn't completely stop it, but it does make it turn around often. That brought a lot of lulz.
@IMNWNE Great info. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

I couldn't agree more.
My original plan a while ago was to start making ME2 vids with Metallica, but then buying a hava (360 gamer here), or hell building a new PC, got put on the back burner...

ACDC would be cool too. Thunderstruck would be an awesome track for a vid, Especially for a vanguard.

... if you want I spose
Also just started this playthrough and it is indeed fantastic. One of the few builds where I could actually drop 20 points and pretty much still have the same essential build with no issues.

Overload [][]
Incinerate [][][][]
Combat Drone [][][][]
Cryo Blast [][][]
AI Hacking [][][]
Passive [][][][]
Dominate [][][]
I've found cryo to be good (situational) as well, however the fact that so many of the really useful squadmates have overload means I've only really been using sheps to blow up pyros oeq. I just ran through overlord and essentially didn't use overload at all.
I'm not sure whether to drop heavy incinerate down to 3 in order to get the AOE cryo blast, or to keep the goal as it is. anyway, my overly succesful run for overlord went with the build:
overload []
Drone [][]
Cryo [][]
AI Hacking []
Passive []
Dominate []
I was really surprised at how well it did and how little I relied on my own overload (I brought Miranda and Loyal Kasumi). The tech damage and locust are definitely worth picking up pretty much at the start of the game, especially for the engineer. also unlocking flash is grand.

Dominate at rank 3 + the Biotic Duration upgrade (I dunno if it affects it) = ~5s of your slave shooting his buddies if it's a grunt. Obviously, duration is shortened on elites.

I'm a little wary of trying to manage two thralls (slaves feels kinda weird). They behave like squadmates, sometimes taking cover right next to you-they're dangerous when they pop out of . It's tricky enough managing one, but having two just seems risky to spare cooldowns for anything else.
My strategy is to use group dominate at max. Use an ally power or rake fire over the furthest group of targets to strip defenses, and then dominate. Then I can focus on the most dangerous threat without being swarmed by mooks.

just had AI hacking save my life. hacked the shotgun geth standing right next to me and about to kill me, and it was immediately dispatched by a geth heavy. looked hilarious as well.

I feel I'm going to have a lot of fun with this class. It's not as "in-your-face" as the other classes but I like just change of pace.
Not sure what weapon specialization I want though when the time comes. if I wanted the shotgun I would've taken Geth Shield Boost .. but I'm thinking AR. Thoughts?

You've already got an SMG. If you have the Kasumi DLC, AR training is largely redundant. Consider SR training for the Viper.

Locust is a nice gun & all but theirs no way it makes the Mattock or even the Vindicator redundant.
I'd say having the Locust helps alleviate the Mattock or Vindicators main weakness low ammo supply as you can use it as a less effective back up gun for when they run dry.

Mattock, no.
But it absolutely makes the Vindicator pointless
