I'm wondering what range of custom TLK strings work, how to input them into 2das, and how to get them to display properly in the game without causing a crash to desktop.

I've tried many ranges of TLK strings, taken the numbers directly into a 2da (such as race descriptions,) and then the game crashes upon trying to load the 2da with the custom string references.

Anyone know how these work?

You should just go with whatever range is auto-generated for your module. I haven't had a ctd using them and I've added new talents and classes.

How do you add them to the 2das though? I take the numbers from the toolset's string editor, and that always causes CTDs.

For example, I made a test module with a single "origin," with a unique name. I created the string, took the number and put it in the 2da slot, and put the binarized 2da into override, and CTD.

your 2da references a string's ID, which is found in the talktable. You can generate that string using the String Editor

Which 2DA are you editing? Two crashes I can think of are 1) sometimes 2DAs like APR_ don't work right when edited with OpenOffice (truncated floats) and cause the game to crash (there I think it was mentioned it may be due to some extraneous space in a cell, but it works with Excel and Google Docs) or 2) if the background description ID has a value greater than 109 912 680. I presume you've also exported the talk table, but since you also tried preexisting strrefs, I guess that's probably not it.

Grr... I don't think I exported anything. That must be the main problem. Though I am trying to edit the backgrounds.gda...

I'll see what happens.
