My opinion:

Fine with M/M romance, but DON'T put it in for the sake of the yaoi fangirls. That's just lame.

I can say with all confidence that, if a M/M romance is included, it won't be for the yaoi fangirls. I'm not sure they occupy a big enough seperate niche of fans of DA to constitute getting "their" romance. As in, fangirls who will dislike or not buy DAO if there isn't a yaoi romance that meets their specifications as opposed to a gay fanbase.

I might have said this earlier, but I've never met a yaoi fangirl I liked. Just...ugh.

I love Anime but the romance in general is bizarre. With a few exceptions like Whisper of the Heart.

Granted all of the Rogues were rather different character wise which is the most important thing I suppose but...I just want someone blunt. Not Sten level blunt but pretty up there.

I also share the preference for a non-rogue gay/bi LI.  I'd like a warrior, but I'd settle for a mage, too.  Just to see something different.  Rogues are always stereotyped as scoundrels (which Leliana and Zevran, while my favorite characters from DAO, definitely were or had a history of being so) and it kind of gives off the feel that one must be some sort of scoundrel to be open to same-sex relationships. 

I'd like to see something that deviates from this notion.

But as you said, the way the character is written is the most important thing.  I totally fell for Lel and Zev even if they were scoundrels.

There's plenty of yaoi with good plots. You just have to know where to look. (Granted most of the Shounen ai has better plots). Yaoi is pratically gay hentai most of the time.

They're impossible to miss.

Because, of course, Alistair is secretly gay for you, or at least Zevran. Totally there, there were hints. Audio glitches of him calling you "My love" are also secret developer hints. No guy is that nice to you without being gay.

I've seen serious Alistair/Fergus shipping, creepy-as-hell Alistair/Loghain shipping, and what DA forum would be complete without incestuous relationships--this time Cailan/Alistair flavored!

Honestly though I don't get all this flak Yaoi gets when other genres are just as bad. Oh wait. It's gay men so of course that's worse.

I've seen ridculously out of character Het fics that made me facepalm. (Like Alistair being a complete and utter douchebag because he was hardened. Yeah right. He's really going to flaunt the fact that he's sleeping with the female PC in Anora's face.) Loghain falling in love with the female PC is another stretch. Zevran turning into Mr. I r jealous and rageful111!!! is another stretch. Those are just as facepalm worthy as Zevran falling head over heals for Alistair. Shoujo ai as well I really can't picture Morrigan falling in love with anyone to be honest. Much less the female PC who can't even give her what she (morrigan) wants.

Bad fanfiction is just that. BAD FANFICTION. Its not automatically bad because its a certain genre. It's bad because its freakin bad.

While I don't agree with everything and I have more points than this, I've always liked this humor essay on it.

EDIT: Rereading, and I'm going to stress that I don't agree with everything on there, I really don't. But I also don't want to type up a diatribe about why yaoi fangirls get on my nerves.

That wasn't funny. It was a rant. A sad rant. Because instead of actually trying to encourage better writing she just made people defensive. Whoopie. Reminds me of people bashing twilight on twlight fan sites. You're just wasting your time.

Edit: Just saw the edit and: Yeah I can understand the hatred of yaoi fangirls. I hate them too at times. But going on and on about why you hate something others enjoy that have no effect on you is pointless. Just ignore them. It's not like they're taking something away from you.

I can't stand Yuri and I can't stand HP het ships. I don't go on and on about how Harry doesn't have feelings for X girl and why everyone insists on making him some uber powered wizard when he's stronger than usual but by no means the second coming of Merlin.

As someone who has ranted a few times myself: They are often times pointless. Nothing is learned and no information is shared that the reader (if the target at least) will react positively to. 

Though...MPREG should go burn in a fire. That said...I hate pregancy in my fics in general. Babies =/= happily ever after.

And yes. Super powered Harry fics irritated the hell out of me. He Is Not That Powerful!
