Agreed Varric as romance would be wonderful, whether for a male or female Hawke. . . .but a nice male dwarf romance in general would be splendid!

I know some are very into Varric, but personally I'm not. If he's the sole s/s option, my Hawke probably won't be engaging in romance. Ideally there would be more than one s/s romance option, but I think that's pushing things a bit. My vote is still for a human warrior.

Same here, I'm not that in to Varric.
As suggested before, the kind of character I'd be satisfied with the most would probably be a tough human warrior who's a little arrogant or cocky. He also needs a sexy accent like Alistair's. I'm not that experienced with accents, but Zevran's seemed way over the top, and Leliana had this lisp (I don't mind her voice too much though). I've heard Zevran is pretty cool once you get to know him, but I didn't do his romance because I just couldn't stand his voice and I thought he was rather annoying....
Back on topic, I think it'd be a cool twist if you needed low influence with him to start his romance; Hawke makes him feel confused/vulnerable so they are always conflicting with each other until the tension just kind of explodes....
Of course, that idea could work for straight romances as well. Whichever it is, it'd be refreshing to have a romance that didn't start with the same old "I'm going to be nice to you because I want to get in your pants. You like [insert companion's favorite thing]s, right? Well, I got you one!" and instead have it start off with passionate dislike. Maybe I'm just weird, but I rather like the idea of characters wanting what they just can't have; I thought it was hilarious in KotOR when you kept flirting with Bastila and she kept turning you down because jedi aren't allowed to love.

As long as the characters don't start flirting with you when you don't want it (kind of like the straight romances, come to think about it. I don't recall any moment in which Morrigan/Alistair flirts with you without you starting it), I don't see what the problem is. If you want a s/s romance, then pursue it. If not, don't. You're not being forced to play or enjoy it, so why oppose something that would make other gamers happy? If all romances were this way, then the whole "I don't want it being shoved down my throat (that's what she said)" arguments would hold no value because you'd have to CHOOSE to play that part of the game.
But anyway, I just hope the romances are good and well thought out, whether straight or gay. I don't much see the point in having a poorly written romance or one thrown in for the sake of it being in there. If the straight romance is crappy, then I don't think I'll want to do it. If the gay romance is flimsily tacked on, then I don't think I'll want to do it either, despite being somewhat of a completionist.
Not that I'm insulting the DA2 team's writing, of course. I'm just saying, though I'm not sure what the point is because my views were already pointed out here and there.

I don't quite remember how it goes because it's been a long time since I've played, but I think he calls you handsome, no? And the whole acting submissive thing to you, and telling you that he gets to "stare at you luridly" while you talk thing, but that's if you're nice to him. I don't think you need to flirt with him to do that afaik, but I could be wrong. And you can just tell him to stop if it gets that far.

You should definitely start playing again. Always a good idea.
But yeah, the entire time he was in my party he didn't flirt with me once. Except for that one bit where he mentioned being spared by a "handsome Grey Warden" but I just took the compliment for what it was and kept on chatting. That was the only time he ever even hinted that he was at all interested in me in any way and, to be honest, I've been called handsome by straight men too often to think it denotes anything other than a compliment.

Well, my generation sucks. People are either close-minded or they're open-minded just to be cool or whatever, not for the principle of it. Or maybe I'm wrong as I'm apparently a poor judge of character. Nevertheless, being gay or bi or just plain different seems to be frowned upon nowadays. Sure, they won't say anything to you, but talking behind your back is another thing. And calling another guy handsome is just grounds for a "o.O what are you smoking, son?" moment, in my life anyway.

The straight romances are the ones that flirt with the warden the whole time. Alistair starts flirting with a female warden even before the battle of Ostagar (the put on a dress dialog you can have with Duncan), Zevran hits in a rather sleezy way on a female Warden even before you decide to spare him, if you are a male warden and take Lelianna and Morrigan into your party, the whole time you hear them competing who will lay you first in the background. With Zevran if you tell him that you are not interested in him at the first conversation in camp, he will never flirt with you and you stay in best buddy mode with him for the rest of the game.Spectre75 wrote...

I think the general aversion to people who are "different" that you're refering to is simply a symptom of a culture that advocates concervative values and nothing that is new to the younger generation. And yeah, I know what you mean, there are a lot of circles within my generation (which I am pretty sure is your generation as well as a matter of fact... I'm early 20s if that clears up our points of view) and many others that frown upon male/male romantic relationships and have a very distinct aversion to anything that could possibly be considered "gay".
In fact there are a lot of guys I know that consider having any real feelings for a woman to be "gay". That if a man engages women as anything more than meaningless sexual conquests then they are "gay". Needless to say, if that is the case, then I am happily gay. But I think this is mostly bread from the whole jock mentality, the male strutting and the incesant need to proove one's manhood to one's own peers. Mostly of men who are uncomfortable in their sexuality and therefore have to be violently judgemental about anything that isn't what they consider to be "normal".
But we're leading this thread a little off topic... =/

I... actually agree with this. If Varric is going to be a romance option then I think he should be Bi. No one should be deprived of his incredible sexiness, making him available to only one of the sexes would be unfair.
Either this or he should be an unrelenting tease. A character who openly flirts with a female Hawke but never becomes available, and who relentlessly torments a male Hawke in the lighthearted manner of two guys that love to give eachother a hard time.
Though... this is based on the widely romanticized version of Varric and not necessarily on the true character... still

Alistair says that he'd draw the line if Cailan asked him to put on a dress, and you have the option of saying you'd like to see that (to which he'd respond that he'd let you, but "only if it was a nice dress" or something to that effect). He didn't start flirting with you.
Zevran flirts with everyone, male or female. And I was talking specifically about the straight characters, not bisexual characters.
The party banter isn't actual flirting toward you in an actual conversation. I haven't heard it yet but it sounds like they're just gossiping behind your back like every party member does. The warden doesn't participate in such party banter.

No Zevran does not flirt with a male warden, unless the warden gives his OK first. And the Alistair respons is something along the lines of "For you I would do it" this is exclusive to female Wardens (he says something different if the warden is male) and the delivery of the line makes it obvious that he is slightly flirting already.Spectre75 wrote...

Take a look at Zevrans recruiting dialog and how it depends on the Warden´s sex (taken from the wiki):
- Zevran: "I think you're royally tough to kill. And utterly
gorgeous. Not that you'll respond to simple flattery. But there are
worse things in life than serving the whims of a deadly sex goddess."
(If the Warden is a female.) - Zevran: (If Warden is male): "I think you're royally tough to kill. I'm only hoping that you're stupid. That was a joke. Let me rephrase that. I'm hoping that you're the sort of fellow that takes a chance every now and again. Ha, ha... No?"

So either I'm missing the point of what you're trying to say, as I don't get what this has to do with my post, or you missed the point that I was trying to get across. I'm not saying that Alistair wasn't flirting when he said he'd let you see him with a dress on, but it's just that he didn't initiate the flirt. You did. If you don't say you want to see him like that, then he won't say it. That was the point of my post; that the straight romances don't flirt with you without you picking a certain line of dialogue flirting with them first. And yes, Alistair says to a male warden that he could just dance around and make the darkspawn laugh as a distraction, but I don't understand why we had to point that out as I was trying to make a point about the straight romances and not a male warden+Alistair one (which is nonexistent without mods). I didn't think pointing out the differences in his dialogue was necessary as his flirting back with you (emphasis on the back) was fairly obvious.
And really? I've never done Zevran's romance, but I seem to recall him hitting on me, which is why I avoid him like the plague after I spare him. Well, yes, I could tell him to stop, but I wouldn't be able to stand his voice long enough to get that far in a conversation with him. But that's not the point I'm trying to make. My point is that he flirts with you as long as you're nice to him (that doesn't necessarily mean flirting with him).
And wow. I was reading this post over again and I unintentionally sound angry. I hope it doesn't come across this way.

It really annoys me if people come here and say that they don´t like Zevran because he hits on their male warden because that is simply not true, of all the six romances the m/Zevran romance is the one that requires most input and assurance from the player and is the easiest to avoid. Every possible romance starter for the Zevran romance is painfully obvious and frankly impossible to misunderstand unlike some of the Lelianna´s where "I like your haircut" counts as romance starter.
