I feel like large-breasted woman are getting a bit of flack here; e.g women with large boobs can't fight well/at all/shouldn't fight. I get the concerns about sexual objectification and etcetera, but please remind yourselves that some real people are built like this, and this discussion is slanted in such a way that is a bit condescending towards this group.

But last time I checked, not every woman has mountains on their chest. Even then, they tend to cause back trouble.

And I think a discussion of what "normal"/ "ideal" is when it comes to body types will always end in unhappiness because people will never be able to agree due to its subjectivity. Since not every woman has mountains on her chest, women who do have mountains on her chest are less valid in some way, or less capable? I know you don't mean that, but this is what the discussion will degenerate into: Arguments about the validity of one shape over the other, the aesthetic quality of one shape over the other etcetera will never be resolved and can be quite hurtful to some people.

Also, what qualifies as a "mountain"? I didn't see Bethany's breasts as mountain-level breasts, at all. My molehill might be your mountain. (Srry, that sounded dirty).

Short version: All breast sizes are awesome by default because they are breasts duhhh.

Absolutely.  All beast sizes are wonderful to me.  However, typical forms of gross hypersexialization of said breasts (in games) are not wonderful to me.  :)

Bethany is a mage so when did mages need athletic bodies to fight with magic? Sure, you'd need stamina to travel long distances.

That's the only reason why Bethany can be almost excused, since she's a mage (but still, if she's spent a lot of time on the road, carting heavy packs, and just generally getting a lot of cardio workouts, her breasts ought to be smaller - excercise affects boob size too, in case anyone was wondering ^_^).

But like others have pointed out repeatedly... the real thing we're concerned about is the prospect of FemHawke looking just like Bethany.

And your body type, many women have it naturally? It doesn't cause you back pain? You frequently lift swords and wear armor and traverse countries?

We've said it before, I am not affronted that Bethany's body type exists. But it should not be the default female model, as it is shaping up to be.

I would put out there that the body type of most men in the Dragon Age or any other gaming universe does not come to many men naturally, yet there it is. How often does a woman of any breast size "frequently lift swords and wear armor and traverse countries"? What kind of a question is that?

I'm not affronted that the smaller chested body type of DA:O exists either. I was, however, happy when I saw Bethany because it seemed as though in DA2, I could perhaps play a character who looked more like myself. I, however have never felt the need complain about how awful it is to have to pretend to be a small breasted woman, because it is not awful, women come in all sizes. I understand people not wanting to play a character with features that are only there for someone's supposed titilation or "eye candy", but for me I just saw it as a chance to play myself. I am not "eye candy" :(

You are eye candy for someone....

Do not worry about how other players see things and let THAT ruin your experience.

Speaking for myself, as a woman gamer, it's not her breast SIZE exactly that bothers me. In comparison to the rest of her body, though, it seems very distracting. She's very slender everywhere else and then pop! there's some big ol bewbies. Of course this body type exists, but it's just not something I'd want my PC to look like.

It's just too bad that we can't have a little variety. But hey, it could certainly have been much worse!

But then I must ask, if you don't care enough about the men's appearance, why do you have to take away our right to care about the female's apearance?

No one has the ability to do that.

As for the main question...dunno, I thought overall the men in DA:O looked pretty good for the most part.  Obviously some had more handsome faces (to me) than others, but I don't think this thread was about facial features.

Remove all the pretty. Wake up everybody! We are supposed to be fighting! You can not fight and be pretty. It's a fight for your life against monsters, dragons, darkspawn, bandits and what have you. And that girl Bethany is running around with makeup, perfect skin, long voluminous hair, and BOOBS! Ridiculous!

I mean come on! What is this? Some kind of fantasy game? If only Hollywood where here…

That's true, but they're not going to be nearly as good in a fight as someone who's toned and athletic. Like someone pointed out earlier, out of all the top female athletes in the world at the Olympics, you'd be hard pressed to find one who's very curvy and buxom.
DA should abide by those standards... There can be really well endowed women warriors, sure, but only few and far in between because really... women who look like Bethany and are constantly placed in dangerous situations wouldn't survive very long. It's literally survival of the fittest.

Urm, I also think that no human being should be able to survive after being crunched by a dragon.

Look, just to be clear, I am not arguing against having an athletic female default shape. Not at all.  I am all for a less buxom-y FemHawke. What I started arguing against was the slant of this conversation, in discussing what is "normal", what a woman with a certain breast-size is capable of doing, etcetera, as stated in my former post I just wanted the discussion to be aware of the fact that some of the statements made here are rather counter-intuitive to the general intention of the thread.

What I'm reading in summary "men are idealized as cool, and women are idealized as sex. Therefore idealizations are not allowed." Perhaps you're trying to imply that there is some other method that will allow idealizations, but I don't think you allow any room for that. Perhaps you mean that a sexualized man is something other than rippled muscles? I'm not really sure, and that is the part of your post that is confusing me. How do you sexualize a male character?

What she's saying is that men like their avatars to be masculine and powerful, too. They like the women to look buxom and unrealistic. Women might like male avatars to be ripped, but they don't appreciate the Barbie look on their heroines.

I don't need for men to look ridiculously muscular in my game. It's an unfair trade-off, since I'd rather do without "my" eye-candy, and men generally enjoy looking their avatars looking masculine. I can do with more realistic bodies on both fronts.

Saying "big boobs are okay because everyone else does them!" is flat-out ridiculous; where were the Playboy models in the last game? Pretty sure it did well.

Quoting myself, here...

"Guys, do you honestly dislike characters for having average-sized breasts? You might think a character is hotter when she has bigger boobs, but do you dislike her for being average? Or not gargantuan? I doubt it. You guys appreciate boobs. ../../../images/forum/emoticons/wizard.png That's what I was raised to believe."

thats kind of a generalization. however id rather see female charaters and male characters look normal, meaning not insanely huge breasts or  a completely ripped out guy. To me that sort of takes away from the characters personality a little. imagine if morrigans boobs were as big as bethany's, it would totally ruin her personality to me. All that matters to me is if the characters are proportioned. As a male id have to say boobs dont interest me. To me the women just have to look proportional. Thats just me.

I understand how women are often sexualized in media and more attention is given to their appearance than any of their other assets, like women are not allowed to age the same way men are, for example. I understand how it would be maddening to see women mostly portrayed, as the y were in Sin City as scantily clad, barely past adolescent, dangerous and yet sexually submissive creatures. However, in DA there were more than a few female characters who had more than boobs, they had brains, and courage, and confidence, so the fact they all had the same body (except for the dwarven ones that freaked me out), wasn't an issue to me. Add to this that we WANT to be able to read the differences between men and women in games and to that end men get muscles, women get breasts and tiny waists, and designers don't create multiple male and female models.

I don't think the problem with female representation in games or media has anything to do with the opportunity to hypersexualize men; women are wired differently and don't seem to get bug-eyed over a particular body part, or at least not to the extent men do. Look at some studies of the effect of higher levels of testosterone for proof of this. I think people are upset because it seems like it is all women are allowed to be and the body models are impossible for the vast majority to achieve.

If you look like Bethany in real life I'm surprised you don't have to put up with unwanted leering from men you encounter in your everyday life, but that's another thread.

I just want the default body to have an average sized bust. That means in between Keira Knightley and Christina Hendricks. I am not asking for my personal body type to be the norm. I certainly can't swing swords in full plate armor, I readily admit. I apologize if anything I have said has made you feel bad about yourself. I don't think any of us are trying for that and I would advise you not to read our arguments as a personal attack.

this is a man sexualized purely for the sake of being turned into eye candy, with total disregard for how silly it makes him look. A pretty close equivalent of what's done to women.

Now i don't know, but have this lingering feeling quite a few men would rear and neigh at the concept of playing character like this because hey, it actually doesn't make them look all that cool and powerful Posted Image

i don't think it should be viewed as some kind of competition of "which gender does BioWare like most?" that's just silly. And proportions are a matter of artistic style. The fantasy genre has long has the well-muscled man and the buxom woman; they are idealized figures.

Now see, this is one area I'd really like to see you guys seperate your universe from others.

We don't know if Bethany is even a long term companion, but I would assume that any party member would have to be quite fit, even aside from traveling and (presumably) carrying things.  Battle in this game is dynamic, unpredictable, and would be all the more dangerous to someone used to a sedentary existance.
