Oh, I see - but surely you lose all your stuff on arrival in Amn anyway? Do you get to keep the stuff from the Saga for the rest of BG1, at least?

You get to keep the stuff until the end og BG1. However, since I normally play the Drizzt Saga towards the end of BG1, the equipment is of little value apart from playing the saga itself.
You can keep equipment recognised by the BG2 game engine in BG2 by pausing the game and dropping the equipment on the floor before Irenicus gets his hands on it. There isn't a lot of such equipment, but if you wanted to keep it, that's how to do it. There are ways of keeping all the equipment, but I wouldn't bother. I was disappointed at losing Belhifet's sword and the staff of the magi though.

If you want to be really cheesy about killing Drizzt just surround him with your party and then kick them out so that he's now surrounded by NPCs and can't move. Then just hack him to death with a long weapon (there's plenty of halberds lying around from the gnolls, though they do have this annoying habit of breaking so you might want to use a magic 2 handed sword or something like that). I've done that a number of times; it never feels good, but his armour for a fighter/thief is a major attraction.
