I wanted them in NWN, I wanted them in NWN2, and I still want them in DA.
If Bioware follows their history, they will have cows, pigs, dogs, and several other mundane animals, but no horses, mountable or otherwise. I suspect that maybe they don't have horses in Canada or something.
they use dogsleds hence the big dog we get

Granted, I'm meaning for training my destuction skill up, so that usefulness is lost in DAO. So no, I won't miss them.

*Shrug* In nearly all the games I played that had horses, the only reason to have them was for completion's sake, they could be occasionally useful in Oblivion, but even that game world was barely big enough to warrant the inclusion of mountable horses, nevermind the fast travel system which made them patently useless once you had fast travel targets in enough places, on top of that they were an incredible hassle when you travelled around with them.
And the wolves keep eating them.

I just couldn't bear looking at the horsie corpse when I failed to protect him. Heh.

I think horses could provide a nice fast travel method. You could have them pinned by your camp and when you click on them, you'd get a map view with different places to visit .
I'm almost certain that the vast majority of travel will be handled on a world map anyway, and if DA:O stays true to the old formula of "Even if mankind is hanging onto live by a thread, the forces of evil are marching on the capital, and every second counts, there's still time to pick some flowers for the local alchemist, find a child's stolen teddy-bear in a goblin cave, and fix the roof of Ms. Harper's house", time (And accordingly, a speed increase for reaching locations) won't matter either...

Ugh, yes, and what does horsie do when faced with a fireball-flinging Daedra? Well, CHAAAAAARGE of course! <_<

If the Game Designers give horse a purpose in their game, they are usually useful. I felt they were completely lacking in Oblivion, you couldn't even *fight* on them, that was a major reason to have horses, gone, out the window. Even Ocarina of Time allowed to you use bows from horses and Twilight Princess did the combat aspect pretty neatly. But even then they realized it was mostly a gimmick and Link never got any upgrades for his horsery, so it fell a bit flat.
Still, horse have their place in heroic fantasy and I hope one day we can have RPG's good enough to support them. And flying. And swimming. And teleportation.

For me horses in computer rpgs were allways more interesting as an element of atmosphere and ambiente. And since we know very little about the fauna of Ferelden, maybe there are no horses in this world. I guess we have to cut off the image of a knight in shining armor riding a mighty warhorse into battle. I guess Ferelden's heroes were footmen from the start.
Hehe. No. Horses appear in the books. There are horses in Thedas, just not in the game.

Heh, the heroes were Gryphon riders, actually.
But then the Gryphons died, and now I can't have a pet that bites other pet's heads off and pisses down their necks.
Stupid diey flyhorses, who likes flying balls of clawy death anyway...

You know what's cool? The big bug thingies used as transportation in Morrowind, can't remember if you actually rode those or not, but they were neat.

Heh I think horses would be nice if this was an open world, but as it's not so it's ok not to have them. Therefore no I won't miss them. However if Bioware wants to make Dragon Age 2 with horses that'd be cool, but they don't tend to make open world games you can explore freely.

Striders? They were basically teleporters.
But they sure got an 'oooh' out if me the first time I stood under one and looked up...
