ME1 Saves unavailable?

This is very strange, I have all the saves on my HD intact and my game will not recognize them on the new HD I transferred them over to. I attempted copying them over to a memory stick and trying to have the importer read one of the saves from there but the save did not show up on the memory stick either.
I'm lost here, I don't want to lose all the hard work I put into my Shepard with 87+ hours played, and I would very much like to import and carry over that character to ME2. Sadly my games won't recognize that the saves even exist. Has this happened to anyone else, and does anyone know how I can remedy the situation? Or will I have to play through ME all over again if I want to import a new Shep?

1. Transfer the whole HDD using a transfer kit, or
2. Use the feature called "transfer data" or something like that from the memory screen under system settings. You highlight a memory unit and press Y to initiate this if I'm not mistaken (read the instructions at the bottom of the screen). After choosing source and destination you'll get a list of things you can transfer. Scroll down to the publisher data and select that, as that is what you'll need to transfer.
And you'll need to use your old gamertag (which I assume you do). But even if the publisher data hasn't been transferred, you should still be able to load an old ME1 save and start playing ME again from that save (you'll just not be able to import to new ME1 or 2 game). Isn't that possible either?

You'll need to transfer something called "publisher data" as the importable saves are special hidden save files. Publisher data is only transferred if you do one of two things:

I have already transferred my licenses and my gamertag over to my new Xbox, and I got my 360S on one of the first days it was available and therefor did not have access to a transfer cable. I had to use my 16GB memory stick (which I formated for my 360) to transfer all of my saves. That was a terrible idea as halfway through the transfer of my old information the flashdrive stopped transferring and stated that data was "corrupt", it erased all the data and I lost all my old ME2 saves, luckily I still had my ME1 saves.
I started another ME2 game a couple of weeks ago, I was able to reload a ME1 save to do this. But to be honest I can't remember how I did that. I used that save and luckily got to play, my other Shep though had just as much time on him and had a different background etc. Which is why I want that save back, but i'm getting off track.
When I open up the Mass Effect slot in the memory tab I can see all the save, DLC, and my "Gamer profile" information. But I can't access it, I will try the publisher data technique that you were talking about on my new 360's HD, but I do not have access to the memory on my old HD anymore.

are you getting nothing when using the mass effect 1 game or any kind of message? if you had DLC for it you may need to transfer the licences. im assuming you also transfered your gamer tag or recovered it from the dashboard. if you can get it to recognise the saves you can load one from just before beating saren, kill him again then it will be available in ME2 importer.
I already have the licences transfered and all that jazz. My Mass Effect will just not recognize my saves, I don't get a message or anything. I just get a blank slot, or no option at all when I try to load/start a new career with one of my old Shep's in ME1. It would be like playing Mass Effect on a 360 with no ME save data at all on it. However in my case there is data, its just a ghost I suppose.
Thanks for the help.

But I was thinking, maybe you'll just need to change career (Shepard) on the load game screen? Might it be that simple? When you boot up ME1 and choose to load a game, have you read all instructions on the load game screen? I don't remember which button to press, but you should be able to change career there (something in my mind says it's the Y button, but I could be wrong
It probably works the same way for ME2, but I don't remember exactly though.

Yeah, this is not a license issue. If you don't have your old xbox HDD, then you obviously won't be able to transfer publisher data from that.

The saves you're able to load when you first select load are only the saves from your most recently played Shepard. All other Shepards are hidden until you switch to that career.

No you're right it is the Y button, but I have already tried this too. It was one of the first things I tried, as a matter of fact I turned off my Xbox 3 or 4 times and retried it that way before giving up. Once you press Y it takes you to a drop down list of all your Shep's careers. When I do this though I only get the one. No where else to scroll and no more buttons to press after that just blank, the game doesn't pick up the saves at all. And in ME2 when you use the importer all of your careers are very nicely listed in bright green, again though only the one shows up for me. But man do I wish it was that easy.
Thanks again for the help.
EDIT- Also in regards to the publisher data. I have high hopes that something like that would work but it wouldn't really make a whole lot of sense to me if it did. I was able to salvage that one career I have (luckily) and it works just fine, but if my other saves aren't working because of the lack of the data wouldn't it be logical to assume that the one save that I was able to get shouldn't work without it either?

To give an example of the publisher data:
I have played through ME1 ten times (I have no idea how I managed to do that
