I've always wondered something... do the characters have different AIs when it comes to combat? I really didn't notice it before, but now with the latest weapon DLC, the differences seem to be greater.

For example, Tali absolutely rapes face with the new Geth shotgun. For some strange reason, I don't see the same difference with Jacob and Grunt. Jack was always a little less efficient with firearms because she often stops to toss biotics, but I would have expected to see something with Grunt at least.

As far as I can tell, their combat behavior changes depending on what type of weapon they have equipped. So, aside from powers, all shotgun-wielding squadmates will behave the same and typically try to close with the enemy. Squadmates wielding SMG's or pistols stay near mid-range. And squadmates wielding sniper rifles or assault rifles will tend to stay back.

This is my understanding as well. I've given jacob an assault rifle using the editor for example and his AI changed to that of any of the other squad member using an AR.

As much as I like Tali, she's not the best at shotgun charging (I've never given her the new shotgun yet though) and normally dies in combat because she's a close range specialist but has very little health.

Squadmate AI differs largely based on the weapon equipped rather than the character. I noticed that with my typical Grunt/Tali team (very effective), both characters behave almost exactly the same when their shotguns are equipped, but separate and act differently when switched to assault rifle/pistol.

Unfortunately the AI's demonstration of this, along with its sometimes awkward shotgun use, means you typically have to make repeated use of Shield Drain and Barrier if you want Jacob or Tali to use shotguns and stay alive through the fight.

Or tell them exactly where to stand.

It helps, but they often get too aggressive on the approach and don't try to preserve themselves quickly enough on the higher difficulties.

Hardcore isn't bad but on insanity the SOP is new room=pause and give marching orders.

Then again, my playstyle isn't particularly dynamic.  I mostly sit and snipe.

Tali can be effective only under EXTREMELY specific circumstances.

She has to be Loyal
She needs Area Energy Drain
She needs to vs Geth only
She needs to vs Geth only in confined spaces like Overlord
She needs to be a Quarian Engineer
The game has to be Hard
The player needs Squad Disruptor Ammo
She needs to be paired with Legion
Legion needs Area AI hack

Tali with the Geth Shotgun and upgraded Combat Drone kick so much ass. I do admit she is the first to fall when it gets really awful but then again usually going down within a minute of her going down... for I am squishy.

But I've noticed Garrus with the Incisor will fricken go point blank with that sucker and shoot people in the face... for kicks apparently.

I've noticed that your squadmates on Insanity will die much less if you play agressively yourself. If you're the closest one to the enemies, they'll shoot you instead of the squadmates. Thus if you play a backline caster or sniper, give your team ranged weapons aswell, so enemy fire will spread among all of you.

Not even remotely accurate...any of the squadmates can be very effective if you just put a little thought into the combat. Yes, even jack.

Geth shotty + Upgraded drone is effective if you're willing to get tactical. It gets even better with energy drain.

I actually find she has very good survivability.

I will agree about legion though...either of them are awesome, but Tali + Legion = pure rape

I agree, AI is based on weapon, not character.

I find that squishy squadmates work best with burst-fire weapons, e.g. Shuriken and Incisor - they drop into cover more often that way.

It's best to be aggressive as much as possible and position your squadmates i.e strategic cover. If you sit back for long, more mobs will spawn and the fight will take longer to finish.
