On Guns:
Dwaves in Thedas have smokeless fuel, The Qunari has gunpowder.

Is it so farfetched to have firearms in DA2 ?

It could be argued that guns would play the same role as crossbows, but that's not necessarily the case –
While crossbows provide a ranged option for a strength character, the gun provides one-shot nuke for non-magic character.

Firearms have huge front-load damage (with high AP but low attack) but less DPS than other ranged options. It gives non-mages a powerful first shot before they switch to something that doesn't take as long to load.
Guns could also be made to fire only if ammo is present, which can be expensive/scarce.

Sorry again if someone beat me to this idea.

On Cannons:

Cannons could be implemented as reusable traps. Take a while to assemble/arm them but they WILL blow giant, gaping hole in enemy formations.

Before you ask why a party would carry such a thing around - consider the fact that the DA party is fully capable of hauling around a hundred suits of massive armor.

Detailed idea Proposal:

Cannons and gunnery profession

Gunnery profession competes directly with trap-making. It
would be unlocked by a difficult side quest.

Basic gunnery – allow a character to setup a cannon.  The piece takes a minute of real time to assemble
and then thirty seconds to load. Allows production and use of tier one
shots.  (Basic solid shots) It also
naturally allows the gunner to disassemble the weapon and return it to the
inventory.

Advanced gunnery – allow a character to setup and take down
cannons in half the time. It also allows production and use of tier two shots (grape
and incendiary).

Expert gunnery – allow a character to load the cannon in
half the time. Expert skill allows production and use of powerful tier three
shots (Canister and quicklime).

Master gunnery – The master gunner is an expert engineer and
is capable of producing shots at a reduced cost. The master gunner is also only
ones capable of production and use of the volatile and expensive explosive shots.

No, Dragon Age is not Fable or World of Warcraft.

If you think of it, cannons are just large caliber firearms. :pinched:
And right back at you.

this is questionable
right now i could say Dragon Age 2 is in some ways closer to Fable 2 than DAO

lets hope so, then we can have another shooter

Ya, it is a stretch. Technology isn't that far along yet, even for the qunari. However, it is BioWare's world, they could include a ridiculous jump in technology (that doesn't include magic) or even add giant golems that act like Gundams if they wish.

Guns in this game and Swords in Mass Effect. Then everything would be perfect.

Come on, be open-minded.
Guns are weapons of Cynical, and Dragon age is pretty Cynical. Is there a more cynical way to kill off a character in shiny tin can then a weighted shot from a musket.

Yes.
FYI that had never solved any dispute.
And I am not asking for computers or automatic cannons here, guns existed in the period and in the setting (as cannons). I am just asking for a usable form of it.

I've always prefered fantasy that was low tech. Swords and magic yes, guns no. So I would not prefer guns in DA2.

no - no guns. I'll honestly shut the thing off if it has guns

I would rather see it as an unlockable content when you finish the game or complete a moderately difficult quest. Nothing wrong with having some alternate weapons when you have played the gane a few times.

Dragon Age is touted as a dark fantasy, and firearms really don't fit into that setting very well. In something like WarCraft, where they've got gyrocopters, steam tanks, and underwater trams that go from continent to continent, firearms fit right in. In the low magic, quasi-Gothic world of Thedas guns just don't make as much sense as a good crossbow to me.

Eh, I'd rather throw a Fireball, create an Inferno, cause an earthquake, or even complete a Storm of the Century on an enemy fortification if I had to. So, I could still carry all that armor to the market, or even sell the cannon if I found it.

But there are already cannons in low magic, qusai Gothic world of Thedas.

It would be extremely rare and very unwieldy (such as each cannonball take up a place in the inventory) but provide an extremely gruesome method of disposing your enemies if you do manage to set it up.

Of course not everyone should be forced to use it. It could even be a serious danger to your party should they stand in its field of fire.
But nothing could be lost by adding an extremely entertaining combat option for spoiled rich parties. (like traps)

I see this thread is about guns and dogs.

Well here I am, b****es.

Seriously though: yeah I wouldn't mind, you know, cannons. It shouldn't be very advanced technology though, any handheld guns should be less effective than the bows and crossbows you can wield as a seasoned adventurer. I believe they only caught on at first because they required less strength and training, and it was only after a while that they became more effective weapons in their own right.*

*talking out of my ***

Regarding magic, cannons of course do have an advantage over magic in the fact that you don't have to be a mage to use them. Of course for your adventuring party, once again, this probably isn't an issue, but for the general population of Thedas it's relevant.

edited for nonsensically censoring one swear word but not another

what's wrong with canons?

it seems as if most western fantasy rely too much on their tolkien-recycled crap

Id like a new change and throw in some technology rather than "LOLOLOLOL KEKEKEKEKE LEGOLAZSLSS IS LIKE SHOOT ARROWS SO KEWL"
