because of the redemption comics. Although I don't particularly like Liara, i feel that i'm forced to romance her because of the events of redemption. She gives up everything to look for shepard and bring him back to life, but if Shep rejected her in ME1, it seems rather strange that she would do that. Dealing with a speciest organisation, leaving her old life behind and putting her life on the line just so shepard and her could be "Friends" again? It seems that if ash was romanced, it would be going against an established canon.

Is there a justifiable reason why an un-romanced Liara would go out and look for shepard's corpse?

Liara loves shepard anyway maybe.

Doesn't mean she still doesn't have a major crush on you if you reject her. Love does funny things to people.

Yeah, even if you tell her no, she still thinks you would be a excellent subject for an in-depth study.

Perhaps this is more or less "School love crush" case.

Liara stated herself that in Asari standards she is practicly underage and her social exclusion in last 50 years before meeting with Shepard didn't help her as well to keep her feelings at check.

But no, you are not forced to turn her as your Li, if you reject her in first two conversations after Therum (but you must be blunt at this matter to leave no room for "but maybe..." option) and after this she will never again mention this subject.

And It's true that Redemption events could look rather weird from perspective of players who don't romanced her but like Nicodemus says... love wanders at many strange roads.

Something we all have to accept, Liara is a highly morale/responsible character so i wouldn't be surprised even if she did, thats why she's the 'better' female romance option if you do chose to romance someone in Mass Effect 1. Im willing to accept it, even though i never romance a character in ME 1.

We're forced to accept that Udina in Councillor instead of David Anderson in the final Mass Effect novel, and also likely that the council isn't human led. Guess thats not that bad after all.

I often wonder about the same thing myself, having romanced Ashley with my main Shepard. I think it makes sense if you view it as something born out of full loyalty and camaraderie on Liara's part, though.

Then again, it does seem like Liara is perceived as the "canon" love interest anyway.

Liara cares for Shepard whether you reciprocate her feelings or not. You're either the love of her life or the jerk who won't return her affections even after she goes to hell and back to save your atmosphere-roasted corpse.

Thats the point, i feel like the romance is forced, and that if you don't return affections you are a souless jerk.

It's not a good feeling. I'd much rather Tali as my LI, but because of the fact that you look like an utter jerk if you dont love liara back, its hard to choose.

I remember someone on here once said they went back to ME1 and did another perfect playthrough just to romance Liara. Why? "Because it goes well with Redemption."

Bitterness increases! I see your veiled message! I can read between the lines! "I treat Liara better than you, Nightwriter, I'm a true disciple of the wonderful BBG, how faithful am I, everyone else is a heathen jerk!" Yeah, I know what you really mean!

How convenient it must be that your favorite LI is the one who saves your life and loves you unconditionally! How easy you must sleep at night!

she's the "female" equivalence of Garrus (à la walking into hell too...)

they both got Shep's back, no matter what

as long as you treat her/them like a true friend, and not a jerk, you really shouldn't feel you're being forced  into anything

and, I wouldn't say, it means, you have to profess an undying love for anyone, just don't dismiss what they've done for you

As others have said Liara just loves Shepard regardless, but she isn't the "canon" romance. The canon Shepard is a huge jerk as evident by him picking Udina, blowing up the council and doing every heartless move in ME1.

Looking from the trailers for ME2 he picked Ashley. Canon Shepard is an extreme heartless jerk and a failure of a Military Officer.

And for some bizarre reason Liara loves all Shepards even Super Evil Renegade with the worst judgement and absolutely no wisdom in decisions at all Shepard, aka Canon Shepard.

And although I usually pick Liara over Ashley/Kaidan at all times I once made a Paragon Shepard who wanted to romance Ashley but I found it pretty difficult to consider it a Paragon decision.

I think Ashley was just meant to be a Renegade LI. She's pretty Renegade anyway. Kills Wrex heartlessly, Very Pro-Human, Mean to Liara and didn't trust Wrex, Garrus, Tali or Liara even though none of them had any interest in Alliance secrets or Politics.

Although, your not really a jerk if you just tell her straight that your not in love with her but you like her as a special friend. You can't control who you love, quoting Shepard "We don't choose this, it just happens and we get caught in the storm.".

Hell, I felt like a jerk turning down Tali and Jack. Although you do turn down Tali nicely. The whole romance feels like Tali just had a teenage crush on a guy about 20 years older and he does the mature thing and tells her she should look for someone her age and you know, not toxic to her. :alien:

You say this as if it's a bad thing. I,personally, go back and do an entire playthrough of ME1 about once a month. It is a truly amazing game.

No one is forced. There is no canon romance. But in ME1, Liara starts swooning from the outset. The first two conversations with her are romance related, from the beginning. To me this seems to suggest that Bioware was steering players towards Liara. The earliness of the romance and the fact that Liara is inexperienced with relationships with people in general - and the emphasis of inexperience in the interactions and romance with her as well. It gives me the impression that Shepard could do whatever he wanted. He can suggest having both Ashley and Liara at the same time - Ashley is disgusted at the suggestion and leaves, but Liara stays.

No, there is no "canon" shep. The default decisions given to you if you didn't play me1 were to get rid of any ties with me1, so me 2 could be understood better for newcomers. And the fact that Udina is councillor better be explained thorougly in ME3, because he is a backstabbing **** and he shouldn't be representing the humans on the council. He should have been killed in the attack on the citadel.

But i think i may have to replay ME1, as romancing ash doesn't fit into the established canon parts of mass effect very well.
