 I was googling around the development of the Baldur's gate games, and came upon the old developer diaries for BG2 on IGN (below). They're a really interesting read, so I thought I'd share them, but what really caught my eye was the article on developing the game NPCs. Xan has always been one of my favourite BG1 characters, though completely useless, as he's an enchanter with 7 CON and proficiency in a melee weapon. Turns out though, he was originally a duel wielding kensai, who was nurfed as there weren't enough mages in the game! There's also stuff about the origins of Sarevok and Minsc.

Probably wanted to make the most of the moonblade. It's just a pity he wasn't truly in BG2 (or at least with his original voice) and a further pity he wasn't a F/M, but then again Multis in BG1 weren't always the best route. He isn't useless, either. Neglect him a thac0 item and a strength spell and he may well be, but a man who can put virtually the entire game to rest (Sleep spell) and then go around crit-gibbing them is far from useless.

I knew all this about Xan except for the Githyanki part. I thought he was okay in BG1 as an Enchanter in spite of, if not because he was a mage. He can make up for the loss of Fireball with Skull Trap, but not having Magic Missile was a pain when Sleep lost its effectiveness later on. Fortunately there are plenty of wands in BG1 for him to wield.



Sarevok being a heroic silver sword wielding warrior is new to me though. James Ohlen is a cruel DM. XD Letting a player get a hold of a weapon that cool and then not allowing them to enjoy it? XD Xan sounds more powerful too, what with the whole Githyanki thing. Sounds like it was a fun campaign though.
