How do I lose the colony?

Does Jeong HAVE to die in order for the colony to be "lost"?  Or do I have to kill all the colonists for that to happen...

Cuz here's what happened in one of my playthrus. I used Renegade option Jeong to fill the Renegade bar up even more.

Then I eliminated all the colonists save Alicia whatever her last name is.  Then I destroyed the Thorian and let Shiala live.

However at the end it said "Colony SAVED"?  How did I save the colony if everyone died?

As I recall, you need to lose Jeong and the colonists.

I may be wrong, but isn't there a limit to the colonists? I mean a minimum number of surviving colonists, below which the colony is considered destroyed? There are 16 colonists in total; I think there is a minimum of 3-6 people that have to survive in order for the colony to be marked as saved, but I really don't remember.

^^^Not sure about that.

Like I said I killed all the colonists save Alicia and I didn't kill Jeong. I just used Intimidate to ramp up my renegade bar.

So I'm guessing since Jeong lived that the colony was "saved". Sucks.

Anyways I'm working on my 8th Shepard (femShep named Katherine). I've got 4 males and 4 females now for balance...haha.

God I love this series. I'm still mad that the ps3 gets it though.

I think whether or not you do the meat/water/transmitter/power cells quests has an impact too; last time through I killed nine of sixteen (more than half, which I always thought was supposed to be the limit), and killed Jeong, and they still survived. It's surprisingly difficult to wreck the place. I may spend a couple days this week playing with sidequest completion to see if I can figure out the variables, figure out how much XP you have to give up to get the renegade ending.

Hmm, that's a good question, as to how many colonists. I've killed Jeong and a few colonists and still ended up saving the colony.

On my renegade playthrough, I did all of the sidequests to restore water, etc, then I killed Jeong, shot all the colonists and the colony was lost. So I don't think the sidequests effect it. I think if you save Jeong but still kill ALL the colonists it would be considered a loss. If you let Alicia live, maybe that's enough for the colony to be saved.

This theory needs some testing!

You get paragon and renegade points depending on if you save or kill a colonist. Maybe if the paragon is greater than the renegade? I suppose that means keeping more than half the colonists alive then. Don't really know, though.

Do all side quests, kill all that moves and isn't absolutely necessary, use grenades against everyone.

From the wiki:
...if you did all the assignments in the tunnels and saved at least half of the colonists, then the colony will survive and thrive, if not then the colony is being shut down.

Wiki's not totally accurate.

I played through the damn Thorian fight a dozen times this afternoon before I couldn't take it anymore, even for SCIENCE - even on Casual with killcurrenttarget hotkeyed it is not a quick run - and here's what I've found out so far.

There are three factors that affect whether the colony lives or dies. For the sake of convenience I'll give each of these factors a point value. You need eight points for Feros to survive.

+How many colonists did you kill
Each living colonist is worth one point; if eight colonists survive, Feros will live, no matter what.

+What did you do with Jeong
Jeong is worth seven points. If he lives, only one colonist needs to survive for Feros to live.

+ How many sidequests did you do
This is where I lost patience. I do know they're worth something, since you can kill Jeong and nine of sixteen colonists and the colony will still live if you did all four. Can't get more precise than that without more testing. Maybe later. I suspect they're worth seven points or less, in total, and thus killing all sixteen colonists will always kill the colony, but I haven't tried it yet.

Basically, if you absolutely want Feros to die, do no sidequests, kill Jeong, and kill all colonists, just to be safe.

Hooray! Cookies!

Okay, I discovered the geth supergun code, which makes sniping the nodes go thirty times faster, so I did some more SCIENCE today and it turns out each sidequest is worth one point (for a total of four). And of the three factors (Jeong, dead colonists, completed sidequests), none are essential to the colony's survival.

So, some possible combinations:

Save Jeong (7 points), do no sidequests (0 points), save 1 colonist (1 point) = 8 ponts, Feros lives
Save Jeong (7 points), do 1 sidequest (1 point), save no colonists (0 points) = 8 points, Feros lives
Kill Jeong (0 points), do 3 sidequests (3 points), save 5 colonists (5 points) = 8 points, Feros lives

Interestingly, Juliana's dialog at the end of the mission will vary slightly depending not just on whether you succeeded or failed, but also how you did.

So who wants to update the wiki?

This is wrong though. I'm playing thru this part right now on my last ever Shepard.

I did all 4 side quests.

I used Intimidate on Ethan Jeong....so he's still ALIVE

I went to the colony.  I don't know if this makes a difference or not but on this playthru I instructed the squadmates to wipe out everyone/everything and double confirmed that   Then I went inside and killed everyone EXCEPT
  • Mascha Doyle (The woman who was obsessed with water)
  • I THINK I spared one other person but not entirely sure
I spared Shiala

I got COLONY LOST (which is what I desire).

HOWEVER I went back to the sky station save and redid everything. Just to see if there would be a change.

This time I I instructed the squadmates to "wipe out everyone" after you get that first cutscene with the thorian creeper outside the colony.  THEN after reconsideration I said to "Be careful but don't let anyone stop you".

Again I DO NOT know if that made a difference or not.

Anyways I again went into the colony. THIS time I killed EVERYONE except
  • Mascha Doyle (Woman obsessed with water
  • Arcelia Silva Martinez
I killed the Thorian and I SPARED Shiala.

HOWEVER this time I get Colony Saved!  WTF!? Is it because I saved BOTH Arcelia AND Shiala?  Is it because I told Kaiden and Garrus to not outright massacre the colonists?

I always kill Jeong, screw the colonists, kill Shiala and I never do the side-quests. Colony = Officially lost. >:3

Thanks for sharing but that doesn't ultimately answer my question as to determining what makes the colony "lost" or "saved"

Is it if you save both Arcelia and Shiala that the colony is saved? Does that mean I can only save one of them?  Or is it the decision to wipe everyone out that triggers colony lost depending on how many you kill.

Did you turn in the sidequests before heading to ExoGeni? Because power cells are useless to the colony without someone to install them.

Can't help you with your first run. My testing results were completely consistent and Jeong+survivor should prevent colony death. Maybe one of your squaddies shot Macha while you weren't looking?

(Though I didn't think to test Shiala, just left her alive every time because it's the fastest way to skip through her cutscene. Hrm.)

I've played the game 6 times now...I think I know how the side quests work....

As for the squad u know as well as I do that you can control where they go during a fight. I made them stay put far away.

On top of that there is a counter which tells you exactly how many colonists are alive at the end.

It was 2-3 the first time I believe.

And it was DEFINITELY 2 the 2nd time around.

You spared 1-2 (Mischa and possibly one other) or 2-3 (Mischa and 1 or 2 others)?

Need to know for SCIENCE.

Well holy crap, guys, I screwed up. Shiala is also a factor! A significant one, worth 5 points. I'm in the process of doing some more dead-Shiala testing, but it looks like you actually need 13 points to save the colony. Mea culpa, I was not rigorous.

Still can't help you with that first run, though, tAV.

Question: can you still do the sideqests in the tunnels after the THorian, if you don't kill any of the colonists involved?
