I've asked a stupid question which I later answered myself before in this forum, but this one is leaving me hanging. I've seen about three diferent tutorials that all start at different stages for working with meshes/retextures, and refer to other tutorials in great long chains, etc. etc. Let me explain what I'm trying to do:
There's now a mod that makes individual body models viable. I'm looking to give Zev those tattoos he brags about, but the body tats don't actually exist. It looks like I'm going to be putting together a custom set of models using a preset base, and just apply the tattoo to that model and make it a "preset" of sorts (let the mod compile it as an option--noob doesn't know the proper terminology for this). Where do I start? I have some idea, conceptually, of what I need to do (pull out the torso model I intend to apply it to and apply it in an image editor), but I'm not sure how to start it, considering the tutorials I've found seem very patchwork.
Or am I thinking about this all wrong? I thought I'd ask before I get too involved and realize I've taught myself something entirely incorrect.

Assuming that you can specify a unique naked/underwear model for an individual (which is what I assume the mod you mentioned does), then it should be pretty straight forward. You just need a custom texture to go along with that body model. You change the MAO referenced in the MMH to one with a custom name, then make that MAO reference your custom textures. The textures are just custom named versions of the default body textures that you edit in Photoshop etc like any other texture. There's nothing really different about the process in principle to any other retexturing job.
