Okay let me break this down:

Unlike Miranda, Ashley, Jack.....Tali and Liara comes across as that female who would actually find geeks/nerdy males attractive and would date them/have sex with them in real life. Compare this to Ashley, who seems like she would only want the alpha males, Miranda who would only want the hott guys, and Jack who would just laugh at geeks/nerds and probably beat them up. It is no wonder why Tali is said to be "the most caring" because she IS very submissive just like Liara is VERY submissive and socially awkward.

If Tali/Liara were a human and was in a room with a guy who was very socially awkward, physically unnattractive, geeky, nerdy alone with Miranda, Ashley, and Jack.....the dude would more than likely score with Tali/Liara while the other 3 would find no interest in the guy and just leave the room.

When you add the fact that a lot of the males who play Mass Effect are probably geeky/nerdy, it is no wonder why Tali/Liara would  be the most popular female LIs because they are the one who would actually pay them attention in real life if they were real.

Lastly, unlike Miranda, Ashley, and Jack who appears to have a minor wall that must be broken before you can romance them, in ME2....Tali is just open same with Liara in ME1. The only thing is that Tali could get sick but that is no different then a girl telling you that she could get pregnant if she has unprotected sex with you. With Ashley, Miranda, and Jack....you sort of have to "be the man" with them whereas with Tali you could be just a little boy (not literally) and she would still totally dig you because she totally digs geeks and nerds. Also add to the fact that Tali and Liara are both virgins so the notion that they do not have to prove themselves to the girl in bed is very intriging to many who.....have little experience in the sexual department. Compare that to Ashley, Miranda, and Jack who knows good sex and would expect a lot out of their man in bed.

So if Liara is someone like Tali, then why isn't she so popular? If that is a question then the answer is that SHE IS. Besides Tali, Liara seems to be the most favored LI and it isn't because she and Tali are aliens, it is because they are very geeky/nerdy, and they are VERY submissive. These fits the traits that would really appeal to men who are very socially awkward and nerdy and perhaps even physically unnattractive. The only reason why Tali prevails over Liara is because #1 she has a mysterious look whereas Liara we can see her face. #2, in ME1 we couldn't romance Tali so the whole aspect of tease was there which made people want Tali even more as you naturally want what you cant have. If Tali had a face that we could see along with being a ME1 romance option, I believe Tali and Liara would be dead close to each other in terms of popularity. But because she is mysterious and wasn't romanceable in ME1 but in ME2, Tali wins.

--------------------
I am not saying that THIS IS the reason why Tali is popular. There are many reasons to explain her popularity and there are many geeky/nerdy guys who would find Ash, Miranda, Jack more appealing that Liara and Tali. Some people like Tali/Liara because they are the most useful squad member in ME1 and even in ME2 (Tali). Some people like her (Tali) because of her physical makeup like her hips and voice. Then some like them for other reasons unknown. I am just saying that the idea that they appeal to the guy who normally would not recieve attention from females in real life, is one main reason why a lot of ME fans enjoy them both. Ashley, Miranda, and Jack would probably ignore them/look down on them in real life but Tali and Liara would actually talk to them and possibly even screw them in real life.

You dragged out the explanation a bit but it's simple: Different LIs are designed to cater to different personalities.

I'd just like to say that (as a female) I've always been drawn to geeks/nerds, MUCH more so than to "macho" (gag) men. Let's leave my attractiveness out of this (ahem)...but I'm in the science field, and I've had several extremely attractive female co-workers with the same sort of taste in men. FWIW. Now, please, carry on Pressly.

And with that being said, would you say that Tali and Liara were designed to appeal to the....nerdy/geeky guy whereas Miranda, Ash, and Jack were made to appeal to the Alpha male?

Eh maybe, but what if I liked Liara in ME1 and still liked her even more after she "hardened" in ME2?

But are you submissive? Are you easy to have sex with? That is what I am getting at. Yeah, you might be an attractive or unnattractive female who likes nerdy guys, same with your co-workers. But that doesn't mean you are submissive, niave, and have "no walls".

I'll see where this goes in the next page or so, but if it takes a turn down the wrong road, it's getting shut down.

Personally, for me, the main reason I'm atrracted to Tali is simple: If you wear purple/black and/or you're an engineer, I gots the hots for them.

Was gonna just edit this into my above post, but a new one is better:

Anyway, I don't like the Tali romance because she never appealed to me in the first place.

Jack isn't my type, partially because she'd kick my ass.

Miranda is fine, but the problem I had with her romance story is that she goes from ice queen to talking about love (not lust, LOVE, are you kidding?) after what seems like 20 minutes and it ruined my suspension of disbelief.  This relationship should have been written to be about physical attraction, especially to start with.

Also like Ashley too because she seems like the most real person of the whole bunch.  Well, her and Kaidan.  I can sense the writers pulling the strings of every other LI when I listen to them talk, even Liara with her inexperience and childlike fascination with Shepard in ME1.

I think you're reading into it too much, personally. There are different motivations for pursuing different LIs. In ME1 I had saves for Ashley and saves with Liara. Ultimately I went with the latter for story reasons and my "canon" save has Ash getting killed on Virmire.

Plus, I think if you're getting serious about any video game romance... well, let's just leave that thought unfinished.

In general, i agree with you.

Which is why generalising is stupid.

I went with Liara in ME 1, and Jack in ME 2.

Analyse me.

I don't think it's 'rocket surgery'. The various LIs were made to be distinctly different from one another, so they would appeal to a wide range of demographics. Liara is the passive female in ME1, Ashley the aggressive. Liara also appeals to those who like 'exotic', while Ashley appeals to those who like 'familiar'. In ME2, they widen the field a bit. In addition to the option of staying loyal to Liara or Ashley, ManShep can hit the sheets with Miranda, Jack, or Tali. Miranda would appeal to the guys who find models and pretty actresses appealing and guys that like somewhat dominating women; Jack would appeal to those who like iconoclastic/alternative females and those who like 'damaged' girls; and Tali would appeal to guys who like the 'damsel in distress' and 'plucky heroine' archetype. Tali also has an undetermined face, so she appeals to those who like mystery/mystique. All of the females have very different body types (except for Liara and Ashley, of course), to broaden the potential base of appeal. Throw Kelly and Samara into the mix, and you have the cute-girl-next-door-with-no-strings and the hot-milf-that-turns-you-down-cold. And then there's Morinth, the ultimate Femme Fatale. There really is something for everyone.

Everyone except us women, that is. I mean, Kaidan is great, but Jacob? Thane? Garrus?! This is what happens when you let a bunch of dudes design LIs for women.

Exactly. People can't really say they love Tali for her looks, and its easy to see why.

Its her personality that draws people.

Tali and Liara are a little different I'd say in what they appeal to, but "alpha male" generalizes it too much for 3 different LIs. I'd say that, if anything, that applies to Ashley most. Miranda it's hard for me to say personally who she caters to, but "alpha male" doesn't seem to be it. Jack is simply for those who are into the "bad girl with a dark background" or something along those lines.

tl;dr: all are different.
