This is something I wanted in the first game, and since we can only play as human I'm hoping for a female elf romance for some elf love. Elves are awesome, I love fantasy world stories and elves play a large role in most fantasy world fiction settings. So please, give us an elf romance. I'm hoping for a female elven companion as a romance option. And could you imagine the conflict of a story with a human relationship with an elf? Especially one who is to rise to some position of power?

It just seems that most of this discussion has stemmed from something that was never said in the first place. I'm sorry if that wasn't what you meant, but I've seen a lot "David Gaider said elven romances have been done to death," without any actual quotes to back that up.

It's a bit of the telephone game in action, I think. Someone interprets something I say, and then someone reads that interpretation as a quote, then later others forget that their interpretation wasn't a quote... and so on. No worries.

I can only speak from the romances for games I've been involved in making-- which for me run from BG2 to KotOR to NWN (and expansions) before DAO. Ignoring KotOR, there's a fair number of female elves in that batch (especially in BG2, which still resonates strongly with me even though it was so long ago) and I was interested in trying something a little different for DAO. That's the same desire that brought forth Alistair and Zevran, as well.

The same thing applies for DA2, meaning the "doing something different" angle. Elves are not off the table, nor anything else really. The only thing you're most likely to not see are romance characters that are very similar to those we had in DAO, and only because I'd rather not do the same thing twice in a row.

I really doubt I'd ever say "you know what? We need a female elf!" and build a character concept built entirely around that. That would be an incredibly boring concept to start with. But if we had a concept that worked well with an elf and it was different enough, sure it could happen.

No promises, however.

Aren't you guys like five months away from shipping?  You still have details like this up in the air?  :):):)

Of course not. As far as DA2 is concerned, this ship sailed long ago. But you guys don't know anything about these characters so I imagine for you it's the same as them not existing.

Fair enough. Thanks for the response David.
Though I would comment that your desire to do something different shouldn't Be the only consideration though.

What
I mean is, if you have a chance to romance a giant female quinari, who
is testerone driven and forces herself on Hawk every time the moons is
full.... Dont do it just because it would be new and fun to design and
write.

regardless of race, I want my female to be enjoyable to romance on a personal level. Not just new and entertaining.

We don't do things just for the sake of them being different. But as a writer I need to believe in what I'm creating, and not be bored with it. If I am, you will be as well, I assure you, no matter how much the concept might intrigue you on the surface.

Why do I get the feeling that Mike is snickering behind his hand?

Do you hear that sound, Sheryl? That is the sound Ultimate Snickering. My heart made that sound when I read the "Give us a Female Elf Romance/Love interest" thread. The Lead Designer makes it now.

Well... I did write Sten's quest. And the Ser Cauthrien fight. And I snuck another one into the Landsmeet duel...
