ut Gaider once jumped into a discussion very similar to this, i.e. Why didn't we have an Elven LI, aside from Zevran who almost didn't count as an Elf, and his explanation, basically, came down to, "The reason there were no Elven LIs is because Elven LIs are cliche and boring. They've been done to death in Fantasy." It was an argument that was a "wee" bit hollow considering you can find plenty of Fantasy novels and even games were the Hero has romanced women of all types.
A stupid arguement IMO.... At least from the standpoint of someone who uses fantasy as an excape from reality instead it it actually becomming their default reality.
99.9999% of the world romances humans.
You will not get to romance an elf in real life.
Human romances are cliche.
Thats an oversimplification, but you get my point.... If you make fantasy games for a living. and read fantasy novels non-stop, then perhaps elves are cliche.
If your a normal smuck with normal job and a family and a normal life, an elf romance is still something of a novelty.
Hell. A romance with a sweet feminine girl is a novelty for most guys these days. All the females I work with and have dated recently are over aggressive and always out to prove themselves in the modern world.
The human love interests in DAO were more cliche to me then an steryotypical elf romance would have been.
I know more Marandas Morigans in my life then Talis or Liaras. And im sick of it.
"im a strong woman, hear me roar, and listen to me talk about myself. Thats how ill respect you and sleep you, regardless of your own virtues.."
THAT is the cliche modern female to me (obvious generalization here. its just a trend that seems to be increasing IMO)

maybe it's a fetish but :
pointy ears are charming
delicate faces are beauty
thin and feline bodies are sexy
what else? [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie]
It's not a fetish, my good man, it's taste. Plain and simple.
To some, there is little difference.

Hitting things with swords and spells has been done to death. AWAY WITH IT I SAY!
Again. What is cliche in fantisy is novel for people who have spent all week in real life. Thats why the "cliches" in fantasy work, and will continue to work...... not that a good writer or developer cant put a new spin on it and put it in a new context to make it all the more fresh and engaging.

I tried to romance a horse once. Didn't go as planned.
You wouldnt happen to be from South Carolina, would you?
i mean maybe if there was some kid of twist to it - maybe have her butch or tomboy I could kind of see that - one that could be hawke's eqaul or one up him. but i swear i'm going to puke if she turns out to be another mage, ARCHER, or royalty of some kind. and for God's sake don't have her be overwhelmingly naive, sweet, and innoncent or a tsundere!
Please do. I would like that. As would many guys. And something I seem to find rather rare.
Dont want it? fine, go for the human/dwarf/quanari romance.
Like equals? Good. I respect that.
But realize that a short, submissive, and sweet woman with an air of kindness and nobility is MUCH more interesting and rare then a woman who wants to equal you in all.
Neither is better then the other. and each can be unique if given the proper writer and context.
I happen to like some stereotypes.
Battle-hanrdened, tough-as-nails warrior women don't interest me (for example). For one, I don' t find them very believable (with their supermodel thin bodies..and the whole concept on general).
QFT.
And breaking a cliche just to break a cliche is a cliche..... and overusing a qord without a solid context is also cliche.
Lets just stop using the word cliche.
There are somethings and themes people like. And I trust Bioware to do it right.
They will give us variety.
But give us an elf.
Because at the end of the day, count me in with the guys who like short, sweet, and deep.
PS:
As a human male nobel you can romance a female elf .... For a verry verry short while.
Anyone else here love that option? wish it could have had more depth/time?
