There is a slight possibility that you can have Wrex after Virmire if you:
-Got Garrus first
-Didn't get Wrex to deal w/ Fist
-When you're about to C-Sec, reject Wrex's offer and he'll be waiting at Chora's Den.
-Finish Virmire (w/o Wrex)
-Acquire Wrex in Citadel Lockdown

Wrex would also be alive in ME 2, but you would have a less pleasant conversation.
Btw, I can't wait for the Shadow Broker DLC!!
