I'm playing a good guy should I do the ritual or not? Is it a bad thing? I don't really want to die.

If you are playing a good guy then you would probably conclude that the Thedas shouldn't be exposed to the risk of the OGB. Having said that, it doesn't appear that your choice will have many long-term consequences.

Well, until the Morrigan DLC comes out next week, heh.

Go with what feels right to you.

There is no "right" or "wrong" choice here, since you won't see the consequences of that decision in Origins or Awakening.

If you choose not to do the ritual, you don't necessarily need to be the one to die as long as both wardens go to face the Archdemon...

Honestly, I don't think "good guys" do the ritual, but it's a tough choice. When I play a good guy he normally doesn't do the ritual... and accepts the potential consequences.

Morrigan states that she wants to preserve the essence of an Old God. If your "good guy" trusts her or if he agrees that the soul of the Old God should not be destroyed, then, do the ritual. I think it is reasonable for a good guy to want to preserve an Old God who is possibly an innocent from what we can tell - it was the darkspawn who tainted Him.

On the other hand, if your "good guy" does not trust Morrigan, if he thinks that child could be a threat in the future, or if he sees no reason to save the soul of an Old God, then don't do the ritual.

There's nothing good or bad about it.

How you view the Dark Ritual depends on your attitude towards magic, Chantry and the Old Gods. It's the matter of how you view these things, rather than a simple "good" or "evil" choice.

Somebody who doesn't agree with Chantry and it's teachings or wants freedom for mages would be inclined to do the Dark Ritual.

Somebody who is suspicious of magic or is a Chantry loyalist would refuse to do it.,

Your characters relationship with Morrigan also plays a part here. Do you consider her to be your friend and trust her? Are you suspicious of her motives and don't get along?

It's in very gray territory in my mind. My "good" Character saw a way that him and his best friend could avoid death and accepted the possible consequences of his actions. It's still a decision that he doesn't go a day without second guessing but there you have it.

Old gods were good things, right?

So whats the problem with bringing one back?

The more important question is if your character believes Morrigan.

I really don't think good or bad factor in here . . . and if they do, good perhaps lends itself to bring back a good thing - an old god.

Let us know how you ultimately proceed.

As Shiori discribed things, I did the DR with my good mage because I thought freeing the OGB could ultimately be a good thing.

My Warden who romanced her did it because he wanted a kid with her. Hey, it extends the bloodline by a generation at least.

To many variables and ifs and unknowns for me to take it.

Mainly do Loghain Redeemer endings.

I felt that way about the Architect in Awakenings. Sounds nice, but way too many variables and unknowns surround it.

We don't know. The Chantry says that the Old Gods (whom the Tevinters worshipped) were cursed by the Maker for drawing people away from Him. They were supposedly trapped beneath Thedas as punishment. Darkspawn who come into contact with an Old God corrupt it instantly, and thus an archdemon is born.

We don't know if any of this is true. We don't know if Morrigan's child would be susceptible to the taint as it was before. We don't know if it'll be benevolent. It could be a good thing or a bad thing. What Morrigan plans to do with the child, if she can control/influence it, is another matter.

Well, not to get into a religious debate, but . . .the current popular religion blames old gods for drawing people away from their god - must be a reason people did that, right?  I assume it's because the old gods were more tangible, perhaps better deities.

And the darkspawn corrupt the OG, not the other way around.  Since they're trapped and cursed by the maker, they may be very willing to be tainted, so to speak.  WOuldn't blame them for that, personally.

The problem with the Architect (for me at least), is that having experimented on me, as well as locking me in a room with two dragon thralls, hardly earned him a good reputation with my Wardens. So there was very little chance for his deal to convince any of my wardens not to kill him.

Except with Mina, my Orlesian Bard/Assassin.

"What's that you say, a way to end the blights so that I can go relax and stop worrying about killing darkspawn? Sold."

Oh, I'm not disputing any of that. Maybe you're right. :) I just said what I did because all we currently have to go on is dogma. We simply don't know if the Old Gods were good or evil or apathetic.

Maybe it'll all come out good and the OGB will be a powerful force for righteousness, maybe it'll be selfish and revel in things like mind control and domination. Maybe it won't care about those around it at all, and go off to do its own thing.

In any case, the Dark Ritual potentially releases a powerful force into the world.

And the darkspawn corrupt the OG, not the other way around.  Since they're trapped and cursed by the maker, they may be very willing to be tainted, so to speak.  WOuldn't blame them for that, personally.

Yes, the darkspawn corrupt the OG. Do they deliberately attract the darkspawn or not? Don't know. They want to be freed, I think, but not tainted. As to whether they were cursed by the Maker as the Chantry claims, who knows? ;) Maybe the DLC will answer some of it.
