Exactly!  How is it a problem if a NPC is romancable by either gender?  No player has to pursue that path, and I'm sure that any NPC-iniiated attempts have a "Sorry, I don't swing that way" response option. 
(I don't count the Leliana "stealth romance" glitch.  )

"Matters" in the sense that it locks the player out of at least one romance path.  And, (unless you look for the spoilers) you won't know you're locked out until too late, as occurred in my ME2 playthrough.  

How is this a "good" thing, from a "keep the largest number of players happy" perspective, even if it's more reflective of "real life"?  After all, this is FANTASY role-playing.

Because the largest way ME and DAO diversify the sexes is through the romance options. Not every companion has to be a romance just to please all fans, not all romances need to be bi.
And making them straight/gay does not lock you out. You simply have to play the game again to see the romance which you have to do anyways to get full romance for everyone most of the time(unless LI allow polygamy)  Characters have traits and sometimes those traits need to diversify from one another, by making all LI bi your taking away more contrast of personality.

Anders was also straight in Awakenings unless you wanna make the cop out arguement of "he was in the closet" even though thedas is accepting of homosexuality and so is the chantry so he had no reason to hide it.

But BW are not gonna give us gay-only options in my lifetime.  So 'all bi' is the next best solution.

One of the devs explained why they don't do gay-only romances.
He basically said it wasn't cost effective to make that much content for something that most players won't use.

Although I was under the impression that RPG's should strive to give the player as much freedom as possible regardless of how much certain aspects of the game will be used,  rather than focusing on the lowest common denominator. Shows what I know.

I'm not sure where, (might be a link in the m/m thread somewhere) but they said that they wouldn't because of the small appeal to a gay only romance. I guess their thinking is that bi romances are at least acceccible either way

It's hard to give a good story and a good amount of freedom.
Contrast Oblivion to dragon age Freedom Vs story.

That's true.

I personally don't mind romancing bisexual companions and don't feel I need gay ones in order to enjoy the s/s romance more.

Though personally I would find it hilarious, to have the hottest chick imaginable only to find that guys can't romance her. All the scrambling to make those mods and having to romance her as a guy hearing the girl-only voice. It would be epic.

And y'know, they might just understand us gheys a bit more too. Walk a mile in another man's shoes, and all that.

Keep asking them to create more demand and they might eventually include it.
Very few people saw Loghain as a full companion (i only got like 2 dialagoues before final battle) And they included him.

Bioware did have a Gay Only companion in KOTOR I (she was just glitched originally to be romanced by both companions.)

Having a strictly gay ONLY romance is NEVER going to happen. Why? Because the appeal is too small. I'm perfectly fine with bi romances in the sense that the companions sexuality is subjective, because I have an imagination and can immerse myself in MY universe of the game, without worrying about how other people play their game. I've always been in favor of Bioware making all companions romanceable and I'm glad they did it in DA2 with at least the F/F love interests.

And as for it being a "cheap" writing move, uh, who cares? Granted Bioware are gods in the video game business when it comes to writing, because they hire actual WRITERS (Go figure), it's still a video game, it's not the ****ing "Seventh Seal", I don't have to respect or appreciate it as a major art form (even though I do), it's still for entertainment.

Her mini-story sure is nice, though! Don't you think? The naively wise, sheltered klutz with a thirst for adventure sound rather... awesome, if I do say so myself.

And Cassandra is pretty hard-boiled for a noble lady, that's for sure! Although maybe all seekers are like that...
