As someone who grew up playing video games, which naturally put me in contact with a lot of Japanese games (and JRPGs in particular), the Japanese fascination with women who have no personality and will be obedient to their men really started to chafe me too. Thankfully, Western game design has really picked up since I was a child.

Oh and Ash in FF 12. But that oen didn't have a romance plot so I wasn't as bothered by it.

And that's probably because I like white hair... and dat ass... 
That's the only thing I actually remember from that game TBH

Yeah, I have a bit of a history of crushing on the stronger ladies from the FF universe who never got the guy, which meant as the main character I never got them. I remember being very upset with Squall over Quistis, You know, I never got around to beating FFXIII. Dragon Age and ME2 were pretty awesome, though.

Quistis was possible my second every game crush. (I played the FF series is a really weird order)

Why oh why they stuck us with LI's like Yuna and Rinoa, when we could have had Lulu and Quistis I will never know.

Plus then they stuck Lulu with Wakka in FFX-2. That actually made me give up on FF-2, that and the fact that Payne was like a crap version of Lulu, with rubbish hair and a terrible personality.

The only FF games I ever finished were VII and IX. In fact the new Deus Ex game is the first title from Square I've even considered buying since the Lulu debacle.

They can't back off now--that would be really unfortunate if they did. Isabela's already been changed in a number of ways that make her awesome; for them to do all that and then say, "Sorry, that was just an experiment she was trying out, she's learned she's not as adventurous and open as she thought," when she's this badass pirate captain ready to sleep with up to 4 people--that would just be the lamest thing ever. I can't see them doing that.

I'm feeling pretty confident that Isabela will be both the main love interest and bisexual. I think their intent is to keep the tension between her and Hawke regardless of Hawke's gender. And honestly, I can say without any compunctions that even if it's just her, that is so much better than 3 weak, short options. Then if one of them is fairly good you end up wishing they'd scrapped the other two and just given you more time with the one anyway. Quality > quantity.

No, it has to be Isabela. That way they maximize the number of players who will see her romantic content, because not only do the males then see some of their best work, a lot of females will as well (since heterosexuals, particularly if they have bi- or homosexual friends, and roleplayers in general tend to enjoy seeing other perspectives, if only during replays.) If you're a writer, you want to know that what you're doing will be seen by as many people as possible, so it makes more sense in a way to opt for a bisexual lead love interest.

I've seen the lesbian and bisexual forumgoers lamenting, and heard another friend of mine off-forum also lamenting, the fact that they keep making awesome characters like Bastila and Morrigan but making them strictly straight. So I like to think that they've been hearing that too and this time finally said, "Hey, why not? This feels like the right time," and chose Isabela partially because she's established as bi. Which I personally think is awesome.

My comment was firstly a joke, and secondly I didn't say it was anything against same sex love. I jokingly suggested Isabella chose to be chaste, not straight. Sorry if this wasn't clear.

I think it's pretty much a given that Isabela will a bisexual romance, based on what we saw of her in Origins. Anything else and you risk retconning her.



What I'm wondering is how will a romance with Isabela develope? Will it start as a casual fling (kind of how Morrigan or Zevran romance did) and then develope into a commited relationship? Will she have issues with falling in love or will the whole concept come easy to her?
