I miss the creepy smiles. That was kind of a distinguishing feature for the Darkspawn for me.

That's where I've seen them before, the new darkspawn look like King Baldwin from "Kingdom of Heaven"

I liked the old darkspawn, even though imo they looked a little cartoony and over the top.

The new one's seem more spartan somehow...but actually less indimidating judging by the screenshots so far

I think nobody likes the new design is better.. I'm curious why BioWare changed it really. To get a more "ownable" model? They didn't really look like orcs.. Even if they were orcs, now they are skeletons.

I heard it was because the darkspawn were too differentiated from one another and didn't look like they were all suffering from the same mutagenic plague

I don't particularly like either design, the DA:O ones look like orcs, while the DA2 ones look like lepers.

Think thats the point they are supposed to look similar to species they once were.

But aren't Hurlocks just corrupted humans?

-Hurlocks used to be Human.
-Genlocks were Dwarves
-Ogres were Qunari.
-Shrieks were Elves

Ok ok I might be nitpicking here, but I gotta correct this, just cause...you know...I'm a nitpicker :P

Hurlocks were not Human, and genlocks were not Dwarves etc.

A Human female that was corrupted and mutated into a broodmother gives birth to Hurlocks
A Dwarven female that was corrupted and mutated into a broodmother gives birth to Genlocks
A Qunari female that was corrupted and mutated into a broodmother gives birth to Ogres
An Elven female that was corrupted and mutated into a broodmother gives birth to Shrieks

So therefore Hurlocks/Genlocks/Ogres/Shrieks all started life as such and were never anything else.

Anyway now I have that off my chest I can get back on topic and add my voice to the masses in saying:

New Darkspawn look = not too bad, don't really mind.
New Darkspawn armour = horrible (personal opinion)

My thoughts exactly.  I could probably get over it eventually but still...

Aren't those pre-alpha images?

I think so but that doesn't matter unless they plan on changing the look of the darkspawn drastically

Yeah, I know - I wouldn't be shocked if their simple/threadbare armor is made more complex by release but that's just idle speculation.

I think I read somewhere and I suppose it stands to reason that the Darkspawn will be taking more of a backseat this time and won't be the main antagonists which means we should see less of them....makes their new look a little easier to swallow :P

Personally, I'd like their armor to be ever crappier. Think about it. The darkspawn are supposedly a swarm. Crafting armor is not easy and fast.

Equipping whole vast armies with any sembalnce of good armor is extrremly difficult. And we know the darkspawn number in thousands.

And we know ghouls supply them with armor. Ghouls are short-lived and limited in supply...soo....

I hate the old darkspawn design (they looked painfully generic) and while I'm not a huge fan of the new design, especially disliking the armor, I think their far better then the old darkspawn.

I believe there were plenty of threads regarding this issue, but they all got shunted down the page list because it doesn't involve facial/chest hair or romance.

Thread necromancy may be a no no, but I think it'd be a bit more appropriate to resurrect those threads rather than starting up a new one every now and then.. But I'm no mod.

End : I don't like it too, but that story is old.

I think the coif just needs some work on re-designing. Like the chainmails in DA:O.

Just the coif? I take it you approve of the rest of the re-design then?

I take issue with the new face, I didn't find it generic, but I suppose I don't know my generic fantasy stuff as well. The rest of their look to me is a secondary concern to how their face went from melted face men to grinning skull men.

I dunno, they don't look as intimidating in DA 2.

How are darkspawn plate armors in DA:O any better? They look terribly generic and cut-and-paste compared to this one.

Sometimes generic looking armors are better.

Slap a helmet on and you can't tell the diff sure, but most of them don't have helmets, so you know they're the signature enemy. Kinda like orcs in most fantasy settings. They could have helmets like anyone else, but they're just so badass they don't need it. But they are killed obligingly by the hero nonetheless.

But my point was, the face, that's what people tend to look at first. And I repeat that melted face man looked scarier, more repulsive than grinning skull man. But it's all very subjective. And not to mention pointless now because the change is locked in, but I just felt like saying it all the same.

I'm quite inclined to disagree. A more chaotic look for darkspawn armor fits immersion much better than having them wear simple plate armors, which make them look like glorified undeads with a pretentious name. Also, that screenshot is from pre-alpha, and looks more like a mock-up than a real combat scene. Lighting effects can go quite a ways.

I dislike the new graphic style all together. It's just not anything I want to look at for any length of time. Sure, this part can be explained by the darkspawn being poor craftsmen, but it's butt ugly and awkward looking.

I hate, and I mean hate, the chest armor. I say give them the smile back and give a bit of variety in armor type.

I don't mind the design, the faces look better and I think the armour looks more suited to darkspawn since it looks rough. They could improve the textures though.

Well I'm waiting to see if there's a plot explanation. If its good, I'll be fine with the new look.
