The armor looks exactly like what the Desciples wore.

I see it.
The aesthetics have been toned down, which as others have said matches the background better than their portrayal in Origins.

See I don't really like the look of the armour, but it makes sense. It looks like a bunch of scrap thrown together to make rough armour. Which is what I'd expect from a horde of darkspawn, only the alphas should have the intricate plate that all the Darkspawn wore in the first game. They're the only ones itelligent enough to put it on let alone make it. Now if only they some how randomized the darkspawns armour so it didn't look like they were all wearing the same outfit.

I also loathe the new darkspawn designs. Sure, they may have looked like 'generic' orcs in DAO, but in DA2, they look like leperous humans with liver spots. They don't look scary. They look silly. Actually, no. They look pathetic. Theyre like something you'd exect to see from a low budget b-movie's tiny make-up and special effects department.

The darkspawnn armor in DAO made sense. Since most darkspawn armor is made by ghouls, well, with the Blight, there would be plenty of ghouls around. Secondly, there was a massive battle at the beginning of the game where there would be plenty of armor to scavenge. Not to mention the civil war, too.

I think this illustrates a greater problem with the new art style. To me, Bio's sudden, rabid desire for a 'new' and 'unique' visual style is making the game look even more generic and passable.

On a side note, the game is to be release in, what, seven months? Let's hope that they're out of the pre-alpha stages of the game! More than likely, the screenshot more or less represents the finished look.

Which is why I say that the most popular mod for DA2--assuming modders bother with it since no toolset--will be restoring Darkspawn to their former style.

i like origins design better because to me i could see the taint on them. Like i wouldnt want to be anywhere near the darkspawn because they might just destroy me with disease. But being a grey warden solves that.

Bioware claims that people have complained about the art style in DA:O. Honestly, I don't remember anyone complaining about the art style in general, people complained about the bland scenery (much better in Awakenings) and the overall quality of the graphics engine. The art style was fine. My personal opinion is that the new darkspawn look worse than the original darkspawn.

Frankly, the Darkspawn design was always a competition in ugliness. Ghenlocks, hurlocks, ... they all looked rather unimaginative. However, there were some exceptions: the architect and the talking darkspawn from Awakening! Those were rather cool designs - scary in a believable way.

What can be seen in those first screenshots from DA 2 is - in my opinion - a step back.

As far as I am concerned, the less Darkspawn we see in DA 2 the better. I don't need mindless, all evil, zombie-like creatures. The interesting adversary was never the Darkspawn and the Archdemon, but rather Loghain. Yes, he was a traitor and usurper, but he had also understandable motives. Loghain presented a moral challenge, the Darkspawn was just hack'n'slash.

So Bioware, don't waste time on the Darkspawn (as long as I don't have to see them after the opening sequence).

DA2 darkspawn look too...clean.

Assuming the Architect survived Awakening, perhaps he's been continuing his research since that time, with the redesigned darkspawn representing some sort of new breed. Although, if they were members of the Architect's sentient darkspawn group, I don't think they'd be launching attacks on the surface (unless the Architect finally decided that peace/peaceful coexistence just isn't an option).

I would have to agree that the darkspawn do look a smidge too "clean" in that screenshot. I think the taint should be more visible somehow, but I'm basically okay with the redesign (maybe rework those teeth just a bit though). I'm refraining from making any final judgments until I see them in action. :P

The first time I saw them, I wouldn't have recognized them as Darkspawn without the Ogre near them ... :(.

I like the coifless look as well, particularly with fangs. That brings them up to (even slightly exceeding) the ferocity of the DA:O designs.

meh...as you're wading through them sword all blooded, does it really matter?

I like the messed up way they looked in origins, like Lotion Soronnar said, they look too clean now, although I do like the Disciples from Awakenings...so...I guess I don't really care one way or another.

Their teeth are white. Cleaner than Morrigan or Leliana's.

I don't particularly like either design, the DA:O ones look like orcs, while the DA2 ones look like lepers.

Think thats the point they are supposed to look similar to species they once were.

But aren't Hurlocks just corrupted humans?

-Hurlocks used to be Human.
-Genlocks were Dwarves
-Ogres were Qunari.
-Shrieks were Elves

Yes and it also depends on the broodmother they came from. If the Broodmother was Human, Dwarf, Qunari or Elf.

they can look good if you make their skin paler but darker if that makes sense and add more grime, wounds as well as jagged and broken teeth.

In the timeline of the game, when Hawke first encounters Darkspawn, they're already on the blight rampage up from Ostagar, so it's pretty much concurrent to when the Warden encounters Darkspawn. So the Architect and Disciple couldn't have amassed enough Darkspawn to change to the new DA 2 look.

These should be the same Blight Darkspawn, re-imagined for whoever it was that complained the Darkspawn in DAO looked generic. If DAO darkspawn were generic though, these guys look even more so.... Grinning skull hurlocks, no thank you.

I liked the semi lizard look of the Darkspawn from DA:O. I think the current pictures just need a better aesthetic design. It looks decent, just make it menacing and have random combinations of scrapped up armor. Add crooked, broken teeth and more grime and dirt to both the creature and armor. Currently, they don't even look scary or even like how their lore explains them, they look hilarious. I remember when I first saw DA:O's Darkspawn they scared me and screamed Bad A. Hopefully, these darkspawn are the ones shown after the events of Lothering and DA:O. Even so they still need a lot of improvements.

Well, truth be told they are really not that good. All is not lost however, this is just pre-alpha (as many others have already mentioned).

True, we haven't been shown any 'final' darkspawn looks yet, but their concept art + alpha look seems to be consistent. Though they're not the main enemy in DA 2, it's still rather disappointing that they've been changed so radically.

Ogres don't seem to have been done many favours as well, and who knows what's happened to the genlocks and shrieks...

So far I don't like that approach.

Bah, Darkspawn in Origins were pretty funny, when I noticed constant grin on their faces I laughed. The only problem I have with new Darkspawn is lack of clothes - their muscular bodies look pretty stupid - and coif, The Ugliest Piece Of Headgear Ever. Also, give them fangs.

I prefer the old models. The coif makes them look like undead cafeteria workers. I can't really fear a hair net.

No the new darkspawn actually look evil in a nice classical way, the old ones just looked like generic zombie crap.

I doubt alphas would be good at crafting armor and most of the armor is crafted by slowly dying/sickly ghouls... so it is going to be somewhat crude for alphas as well.

Well I'm waiting to see if there's a plot explanation. If its good, I'll be fine with the new look.

LOL!!!!! from the people that brought us "some have horns and some dont"

Personally i have mixed feelings

Good: I do like the improvised look of their armour it makes them look like scavengers BUT we also know that they are inteligent enough to make use of dwarven facilities they have overrun.... .they cant work out anvil but they can operate Golems and traps?

Bad: Oh boy where do I start skintone, teeth, that ridicolous chainmail hood, they dont look remotly scary etc etc etc
