Are the Baldur's Gate novelizations actually good?

I've read the first two (not ToB).  It's almost like Bioware told Athans "the books should be dark and gritty" and Athans interpreted that as meaning he should show people die gruesomely and have characters that think about sex a lot.  And he somehow still pulled that off in the most juvenile way possible.

Athans comes off as a rank amateur...with his characterization, his storytelling, and his prose.  The best that can be said IMO is that he does follow the general outline of the story of the games as far as where the characters go and why (though obviously he skips a lot).

To top things off, obviously neither Bioware nor WotC went and did a serious continuity check to make sure what Athans wrote matched existing material, or game material that could have been used in a more official capacity later.

I remember first reading Salvatore's books and liking them immensely, but now I dislike them immensely. Aside from the "perfect protagonist" issue that I obviously share with others, I hated his habit of killing off people I found interesting, often in over-the-top gruesome ways. I know it was authored by Thomas Reid (overseen by Salvatore though, so half-credit), but the moment in Insurrection when Faeryl is killed by Jeggred I just found...disgusting. I could not conceive any reason for such a death other than shock value or some sick twisted inner fantasy of the author. I've taken a permanent break from Salvatore with the exception of anything more involving Artemis Entreri.

Oh BlazeShepard ... I thought I'd laid this thread to rest!
Reading back over the previous posts makes me laugh, but also refuels my burning hatred for Drizzt. I'm specifically going to start up a new BG1 game just to kill him from across the pond, then import into BG2 and kill him again, but his time his pathetic band of brothers will die too!

Edit: I don't have the energy, I'll just hate him from afar.

Heh, yeah right after I posted my comment I looked at the previous post that read "Created 11 months ago" and did a facepalm. One of those times, I suppose.
