While I am aware that it is much too late to actually influence the companions in DA2 at this point, I would actually like to know the opinion of the forum on this matter.
I believe that a full blown templar would make for interesting dialogue, especially considering that Bethany (and Hawke too, depending on class) is a mage. Also it would be interesting to get some answers to questions like: Just what exactly do the final vows entail? What is life as a templar like? How are they trained? Are they trained to actually hate mages? What are their views on the current events? Is the lyrium really useless?

Furthermore it would make the experience much more rounded if we had a
friend/companion who is on the templar's side, if the Chantry and my
favourite tin cans are going to play a bigger role in DA2.

It would be nice, if we had a Templar
who thinks what he does is right and doesn't seek to question his actions. That said if we had a Templar who does his duty not because the Chantry told him so or his religion but because he has thought it through and come to the conclusion that it is the right thing. He sympathises with the Mages and admits its a terrible thing to be done to them but necessary. Have him plagued by guilt but still resolute in his duty. That would be brilliant.
Basically said Templar views killing mages as a terrible but necessary thing. How they came to that viewpoint could vary, perhaps it was imply over time or maybe a single incident. Perhaps at one point they were really zealous but they went overboard and realised that.
As a result of their revelation they feel shame, sorrow and regret. The kind that makes it difficult to sleep, the kind that makes you not want to sleep. (Lyrium deprivation would be emotional torture to say the least.) Yet their experiences have taught them the circle and its Templars are necessary. So they have decided to carry out their duties immaculately.
They can't rest easy because for them it would be utterly wrong. They have taken away others freedom and lives, so why should they then be allowed to enjoy themselves? They choose to become utterly selfless. A troubled individual to say the least.
This templar would also critzise the current hold the order has over Kirkwall, as in
his opinion the templars are there to prtect the people from the threat beyond the veil and not to rule over them.

As for a L.I.: The Templar feels enjoying themselves would be morally wrong because they have taken the
lives of others. So they decided to follow a hard life without joy. Only duty. Then Hawke comes along ..

EDIT: Thank all of you for your ideas and feedback. I would never have thought to get such positive reactions.

while he's not a full blown lyriun addict, in the demo there is a templar that helps you during your escape from lothering IIRC

Interesting idea. I think it could be fun when he gets cold turkey if he goes without lyrium for too long

Crack fiend for LI? I think the stark raving mad lyrium addict is a myth. Did you see any in DA?

There was one standing at the door of the Chantry in Denerim and another really mad one in the dungeons of Arl Howe.

On dialogs, things have to be more interesting than:

Alistair: You want me to marry Anora? Why?
You: She govern while you lead.
Alistair: OK, you've convinced me. I don't like it though. Excuse me, I need some time to think.

The above may not be the exact dialog in DA:O but it is close enough and things need to be more interesting than that. There are very many instances of such.

Oh please do, I always like your long posts. You make my arguments so much better than I do.^_^
Thank you all for your opinions so far, it was an interesting read.

About the templar in the demo, I believe he was called Wesley: Do we have an explanation why he is married? Are all templars allowed to marry? If so, then why didn't the one in the tower, the one with the desire demon, marry? She said that he was resentful of his vows and wanted nothing more than a family...

Another thing I find interesting about the templars is that we have so many different versions of them: There are the nutty ones, like Post-trauma Cullen, the middle way ones, like Greagoir, the nice ones, like Ser Otto, the chatty ones, like Bran...

:(Do I have to? *Sigh* Very well.

Give me a minute

As to why Wesley is married there are a number of potential reasons. Only iniaties take vows and if one is to become a Templar they must take said vows. What these vows entail however is not revealed. I think chastity maybe one of them but I'm not sure. Leliana's dialogue reveals quite a bit although I think its through the 'Is your fruit forbidden?' line which I haven't used for ages because it sounds too much like 'what are you wearing *heavy breathing*'.:? Anyway ... :? ... the the vows taken may differ dependant on where the Templar in question serves. So the Circle Tower would likely be more strict. Wesley may simply be breaking his vows and because he isn't stationed at somewhere "busy" like the tower or Denerim, the rules aren't maintain with as much vigour. It wasn't uncommon in the Middle Ages for monks to have families despite it being against Da Rules. They also accumulated wealth and did a whole manner of naughty things but I'm going off topic.

From what we have heard so far it might be that DA2 reinforces the similarities between the templars and our real life knight Templars/Deutscher Orden (they founded Prussia!) with them having more political power and more use as an actual army, like Alistair said.
I'm looking forward to finding out.
As long as they aren't,-- how did you say it Heretical Sound?-- "moustache twirling and washing puppy blood out of their robes" when we see them.

Now you made me feel bad. :crying:

*ahem* Why a Templar would make a good/interesting companion
Firstly Alistair is not a Templar. He kept the T-Shirt but he's a Grey Warden first and foremost so it be won't broken record syndrome.
A Templar would allow the player to delve into the lore of the Chantry and the Templars. How they operate, ranks,  what's their name, what's their quest and what's their favourite colour etc.
It would also allow the player to be given the personal account of a Templar. I.E. what's actually like to be a Templar. That way they are no longer simply a faceless group but have a "living" "breathing" face .

In addition to all the lovely lore, there is also the story potential. There is a whole wide world of potential and it depends on how one characterises said individual. There is conflict within the character themselves e.g. to be lawful or to be good, duty vs humanity, good intent vs evil act, etc (Also see this )

With Templars we also have the lovely issue of lyrium addiction and withdrawal. "Over time, templars grow disoriented, incapable of distinguishing memory from present, or dream from waking. They frequently become paranoid as their worst memories and nightmares haunt their waking hours." Now combine that with someone who has had to do terrible things like this. Not to mention the nightmare fuel that abominations are. Where do I sign up? I AM INTEREST.

And in terms of story, given mage vs templar is likely to feature prominently having the Templar perspective availible which provide a much more rounded experience. We are getting a mage no doubt but what about t'other side?

And like the slave driver said think of the dynamic between Templar and Bethany or even mage Hawke. There is a chance to shape the Templar's perspective. If all they encounter are abominations and malificar, that's what mage will mean to them. It's a chance to set the record straight. Of course some will display bigotry back, but hey I'm not your moral compass. But you can't shake any hands with a closed fist.
Of course there's the romantic potential as well although that said, evidently you don't need to be a companion to have admirers. *cough* Bran *cough*

Possibly puppy blood maybe kitten. Or even both.

No wait, I'm actually not. You make way too interesting points to be sorry about being a salve driver.

Wait, there are templar t-shirts? Do they wear it during their pillow fights? *cough* Anyway, on topic: Alistair also didn't actually like being a templar and was very glad to get out of there. Interesting would be a templar that thinks what he does is /mostly/ right.

And conflict is always good, isn't it? I need to quote Heraklit here: Conflict/War is the father of all things.

That I'd also like to know... Maybe they have forms somewhere?

*nods all the way* That would be very interesting.
Templar: Do we not have a healer in here?
Mage: OH, I am sorry, were you saying something? I thought you were begging an apostate to use his power freely.
Templar: -.- Now I know why we hunt you down. You are a royal bastard!
Mage: *skips ahead happily*

Mage: Don't you have some apostateslaying and puppykicking to do?
Templar: What? No! I like puppies!

Templar: Thank you, mage, for your help, you aren't as annoyingly weak as you look.
Mage: *glares, opens mouth closes it again*
Templar: *smirks smugly and walks off*

Also, who doesn't like Bran? He is funny and chatty!

Deutscher Orden? The Teutonic Knights?

Yeah, those. I was just using the German term from when they founded Prussia.

"There's a uniform? Where's mine, then? (Templars only)"
As to how a Templar is characterised, well they could go anywhere ... okay maybe not all singing and dancing but it doesn't have to be limited to them having a stick up their backside.

Why they wear those sexy, sexy skirts... :P

What can I say ... they dress to impress.

It wouldn't make for a good game if Hawke spent it at home, minding the cabbages.

They do but from what I understand its a bureaucratic nightmare. Make one single error and you have to do it all again.

Edit: further thought. If there were say two Templars, there could be interesting discussions on exactly how a Templar should behave. Like the "discussions" between Elias and Barnes in Platoon.

Well, I can't really identify anything in those splatter shapes, so I don't know. And don't female templars look pretty much like male templars, body shape-wise?
Still, I'll be just a little sad if the oppurtunity is lost.

Speculation is what keeps the hype machine rolling. As I said: I can't really see anything in those splatters, so they might as well be the shapes of the dev team laughing at their hyped fans.
And you don't see much of the Bristols with their full plate armor, if I recall that one female templar in Awakening. Or maybe I just wasn't looking at her chest hard enough, who knows?

Speculation is what keeps the hype machine rolling. As I said: I can't really see anything in those splatters, so they might as well be the shapes of the dev team laughing at their hyped fans.
And you don't see much of the Bristols with their full plate armor, if I recall that one female templar in Awakening.

Rylock  ... I wonder why she never gets invited to parties. Seemed like a nice lass. Do you mean you can't see any form of human shape in the splatters?

I just wasn't looking at her chest hard enough, who knows?

What are you implying? <_<

Humans? I thought those were nugs...
Huh...

But yeah, Rylock was... a nice lady.
