I believe that a full blown templar would make for interesting dialogue, especially considering that Bethany (and Hawke too, depending on class) is a mage. Also it would be interesting to get some answers to questions like: Just what exactly do the final vows entail? What is life as a templar like? How are they trained? Are they trained to actually hate mages? What are their views on the current events? Is the lyrium really useless?
Furthermore it would make the experience much more rounded if we had a
friend/companion who is on the templar's side, if the Chantry and my
favourite tin cans are going to play a bigger role in DA2.
It would be nice, if we had a Templar
who thinks what he does is right and doesn't seek to question his actions. That said if we had a Templar who does his duty not because the Chantry told him so or his religion but because he has thought it through and come to the conclusion that it is the right thing. He sympathises with the Mages and admits its a terrible thing to be done to them but necessary. Have him plagued by guilt but still resolute in his duty. That would be brilliant.
Basically said Templar views killing mages as a terrible but necessary thing. How they came to that viewpoint could vary, perhaps it was imply over time or maybe a single incident. Perhaps at one point they were really zealous but they went overboard and realised that.
As a result of their revelation they feel shame, sorrow and regret. The kind that makes it difficult to sleep, the kind that makes you not want to sleep. (Lyrium deprivation would be emotional torture to say the least.) Yet their experiences have taught them the circle and its Templars are necessary. So they have decided to carry out their duties immaculately.
They can't rest easy because for them it would be utterly wrong. They have taken away others freedom and lives, so why should they then be allowed to enjoy themselves? They choose to become utterly selfless. A troubled individual to say the least.
This templar would also critzise the current hold the order has over Kirkwall, as in
his opinion the templars are there to prtect the people from the threat beyond the veil and not to rule over them.
As for a L.I.: The Templar feels enjoying themselves would be morally wrong because they have taken the
lives of others. So they decided to follow a hard life without joy. Only duty. Then Hawke comes along ..
EDIT: Thank all of you for your ideas and feedback. I would never have thought to get such positive reactions.
