Is there a certain order that the game is (somewhat) written around, or can you pretty much pick your own path through the game once you leave Lothering the first time?

Of course the game is open to whatever variations you want. Some tough quests like Orzammar it might be wise to tackle towards the end, when you are higher level.
Nevertheless there is a certain logic in the way the quests are stringed that would seem to indicate the "standard" or "storyline" route.
- Origin-Ostagar-Lothering
- In Lothering you hear about Arl Eamon's plight and also Alistair seems to be inclined to suggest that the best course would be to seek Arl Eamon first. So you go to Redcliffe.
- Battle of Redcliffe. At the end, Bann Teagan asks you to meet him at the windmill... Which takes you to Redcliffe Castle.
- At the end of the castle quest you learn of Connor's plight. There are alternative ways to tackle it, but the smoother and more consistent with the "good guy" approach is to seek out the mages help to send someone to the Fade. So on to Lake Calenhad and the Circle.
- Back to Redcliffe Castle, you save Connor but Eamon is still asleep. Lady Isolde suggests that you need the Ashes of Andraste, but first you need to find brother Genitivi in Denerim. So you go there.
- Probably after resolving several of Denerim's side quests, you go to find the Ashes.
- With the Ashes, back to Redcliffe Castle. You cure Eamon, and he suggests that you round up your other allies. At this point you are no doubt of a level to resolve the remaining quests in any order.

The game was intended for this:
Origin - Ostagar - Lothering
Broken Circle/Redcliffe and Redcliffe Castle
Brecilian Forest
Urn of Sacred Ashes
Orzammar
Denerim - Landsmeet - Final Stretch
This is all based on the levels of the areas as the designers made them; I regularly do a lot of the Denerim quests very early with no troubles. So the order is really up to you.

It's really best to do the forest last since there are no associated party members. You want the team recruited sooner rather than later so you can take the reigns on their leveling.

I love the "suggested" or "the game was intended" notes above. Look at
http://dragonage.gul...#difficulty_map
which is the most official dev statement you're going to see, and you'll note that there are many possible paths that can be followed--and none of them are right or wrong. Add in the DLCs now available, and for an experienced player it's entirely possible to have Oghren in the party when recruiting Sten in Lothering.
The Broken Circle quest is definitely easier to do successfully straight out of Lothering than Orzammar or Redcliffe...but feel free to do it in whatever order you want. That's one of the beauties of the game. I'm currently doing a Dwarven Commoner playthrough where I did:
Lothering (mostly complete)
Visit Denerim for Archivist's Belt and to start some sidequests
Stone Prisoner DLC
Warden's Keep DLC
Redcliffe Village, and Castle up to "what to do about Connor"
Side trip to Orzammar (had to go visit mah peeps)
Currently in Aeducan Thaig
Obviously, that's not the "recommended" or "suggested' sequence from what's above...but you know what, it works for me.
EDIT: Fix URL

Yes, if you do a couple of DLCs first you should be high enough to go anywhere. And I agree with Caralampio - that order is what the game nudges you to do.

True, there is no Order of Play so to speak. Encounters scales to your warden's level so while painful at times, it is beatable - so no - there is no such thing as "this area is designed for this level etc." Okay... so there some "rewards" in certain areas that might be of great help if you get them early but that is about it. Once I did Ozammar first and it was actually very easy
If there were a "right" order of play, it would be go wherever you like whenever you feel like it.

I actually did Orz first most recently on my current playthrough (elf mage) and didn't find the Deep Roads all that frustrating.

A Brecilian revenant and its mob can be very frustrating for a low-level group on nightmare.

When I went to the forest first, I found that more frustrating than the deep roads.

BROOD MOTHER i hated that fat b!tch she killed me every time and since i had no saves before the deep roads i had to completely redo my entire game b!tch but really i just plan out i go to the map straight from Flemith and then plan my path usually go stone prisioner--Wardens keep--Return to ostagar--Eamon--ashes--circle--some sides quests--Orzamar--Brecillian--side quests--Final missions--Awakening--Witch hunt-Golems.
the reason i do witch hunt before golems cause if you pay attention to awakening's epilogs it says the warden may have gone in search of Morrigan :wub:he looking for his B!ITCH lol
ps: sorry for the exsseive swearing even though black in a way

Well the game pretty clearly nudges you to go to Redcliffe first, then to Denerim, then Urn of the Sacred Ashes. From that point there's no real direction and you can do the rest in any order -- it won't make much difference.

The best order is Broken Circle first, then whatever you want. Broken Circle is easy compared, and this way you get your 21 bonus attribute points early, and there's really nothing that'll help you more. You also get Wynne if you need a healer.
If you want to know the easiest part after Broken Circle, it's probably Redcliffe, after that it's pretty much the same in my opinion.

the way i do it is after lothering i go to denerim to do some side quests for xp and money. then i either go to redcliffe or mage tower, then either the ashes or forest. i finish up with orzammar.
