For all you people who have constant crashes, add a -dx9 in your DA shortcut in the target field after the path.

So it looks like this "C:/program files/bioware/blablablabla/DA.exe" -dx9

use the shortcut to start the game.

Also if you're running a Quad core CPU or higher, try setting the application's affinity to less proccessors, 1-2-3 depending on how stable it is. You can do that from the task manager by right clicking the game while it runs (procesess tab).

I used the Procesor affinity fix and it worked for my Core i7 I can attest to it. Also, Dragon age is very finicky about having the proper MS visual C++ files current. It was in the 1.02 patch. I have put together a list of files that make DA:O run like butter INSTALL MANUALLY if necessary if windows update did not do so on regular updates.

For overall menu and startup and DLC menu updating features DA:O

-MS .NET Framework 1.1
-MS .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
-MS .NET Framework 4 Client Profile

after realizing that these particular programs had an effect on stability of DA:O and drivers (Catalyst yes.yes, Forceware??) I am unsure which one specifically is most important, but having all does not hurt so I included them all in my windows install.

Also for overall stability and graphics processing-

-MS Visual C++ 2005 ATL Update kb97392- x86 8.0.50727.4053
-MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
-MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable - (newer update)
-MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable- x86 9.030729.4148

x64 will be the start of the version if you use a 64 bit OS

I noticed these files are installed during various games in some form or another again having all widens the range of operative sucess. at present no games crash (that I play-heavy graphics)

Also, DA:O is picky about Anti-Virus, BIOWAREs PC troubleshoot said i(as I recall) itself, or at least a stickied fix thread said that AVG causes crashes somewhere it also recommended Microsoft security essentials. I had AVG 8.0 and then changed to MS security essentials and it stopped the crashes I was having. Also a friend used Panda and changed to MSE and it fixed his game as well.  I believe these file additions and updates made DA:O work wonderful, also having cleanly installed proper version drivers is essential. These file updates and MSE made DA:O a lightining fast reliable game with maxxed graphic specs!

I am not pro MS or against but MSE is lightweight totally functional and never interferes with the install or operation of any game I've known of! try it???

AVG causes DA:O to crash? What the heck?

(Still no crashes since I did the two things that bloodreaperfx recommended, knock on wood.)

I thought the same thing, but no BS. It really screws with DA:O in some way. I will dig up the post it was in I think it was from BIOWARE itself. It is due to the action that AVG uses by actively "protecting"/scanning running programs that link to the internet? In which case causes DA:O to say CCCCRAAAASSSSHHHHH!

I am glad to hear you trusted bloodreaperfx his knowledge is true on both issues- the affinity and the DX9 add in the shortcut, Perfect. it should not be a matter of luck now. There are many different fixes for different systems, once you find yours it seems like DA:O will play great. ENJOYY!!! Image IPB

Help: I have LOTS of mods installed, thing is as of 1.04 ver. I cant see the model of a character when creating a new character, I can still see a created character though, my question is? does anyone have the same problem, and if so do you have any mods that could cause this?

I use AVG with the "resident shield" active and I don't experience these crashes on 1.02a.  I don't think it's a valid explanation if it only occurs on 1.04.

I've not had these crashes on 1.02a.  1.03 and 1.04 crash much more often on the same hardware.

Again, I run AVG and I have experienced NO CRASHES on 1.02a.  Any increase in crashes have been (in my experience) attributed to 1.03 and 1.04, not the anti-virus software.

I was also skeptical about it but in 5 hours gaming I never crashed with Awakening and 1.04 installed. Either I am lucky or something in my computer agrees with the game. Very smooth and I actually like the changes they did. Follow the advice given and you should have no problems. Disable all online options except upload profile, no anti-aliasing and it should not crash. I have small freezes that might be windows 7 64bit related. Had it on all patches.

I've had a issue with Awakening not working when I install the patch 1.04, not only that, I also use a modmanager program and have installed other third party mods, could one of these be affecting Awakening.
