I don't think you can really compare the two since they are so different. I mean you can somewhat compare ME and DA as both are stat based RPGs with economies but the combat is so different that you can't really compare that aspect. Personally I don't feel ME2 and DA can at all be compared because they are so different that you're better off comparing ME2 to BioShock as they share a much closer game play experience. Personally I go ME > DA > ME2, ME2 just became too "streamlined" for me.
What's better the Mass Effect series or the Dragon Age series and why?

ME2 > DA >>>> ME1
The gameplay in ME1 just wasn't very good. The main plot was good (but very short) and the greater universe was a pretty good setting. Other than that it had a lot of problems. DA was good but the pacing held it back and too much of the plot was spoiled. I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I knew less about it before release. ME2 was great, can't wait for ME3.

The Mass Effect universe and lore are more interesting.
The Dragon Age story and characters are more interesting.
Put Dragon Age quality characters and story in the Mass Effect universe and it would be the greatest game ever.

DA is good but IMO ME is way better.
1)
As some already mentioned the graphics of DA are only mediocre (especially the characters: not enough polygons, textures not detailed enough, etc.). The ME graphics is much better.
2)
I don't like that your DA character doesn't speak (no voice actor). That also bothered me in the KotoR series and Jade Empire. It's unrealistic, takes atmosphere and the dialogues feel a bit "boring" to me because of that.
3)
- I'm not a big fan of the DA combat system & possible camera angles. I prefer to play in 3rd person view (like in most Bioware RPGs) but unfortunately sometimes this view is a bit to confusing in DA and I don't like to play in the tactical overhead view (takes a lot of atmosphere IMO and the graphics looks even simpler).
- Also, sometimes in 3rd person view the mouse reacts as if I'm playing in the tactical view (when I click the right mouse button to turn the camera the mouse clicks somewhere on the grounds and orders my character to go there, even if I don't want it) Would be better if you could chose before a game if you want to play just in 3rd person or tactical view and the camera and controls stay like this throughout the whole game.
- Also I think it's a bit difficult to control and change between all 4 characters of your team. It happens a lot to me that one character is killed during combat as I haven't noticed he is seriously injured and he needs some medicine or I just forget to use special abilities of my teammates.
So, in general IMO controlls, camera angles & combat system should be much easier to get into and less confusing.
4)
That's just my taste but I prefer sci-fi scenarios over medieval/fantasy scenarios (so that's not DAs fault)
5)
the DA story is very good but IMO the story of ME is even better, more breathtaking and for me has a more unique feeling to it. The DA story feels a bit "overused" (too much similarities to most other fantasys scenarios/games), even there is a lot unique stuff in it.

Mass Effect series hands down, no doubt about it. Better universe, better interesting characters and story, cinematics, music, gameplay, it has it all. I find the Reapers much more interesting than the archdemon, or the Geth to the Darkspawn. Logaine just doesn't do it for me like Saren did, or isn't even as remotely unique or as good as Martin Sheen as TIM. TIM we can't even figure out, hes just that damn good. Even the backstories like the Genophage or the Quarians and Geth are just as interesting as the main story itself.
The only thing Dragon Age really had was a longer story, better character interaction than ME 2, although I liked the little mission briefs in ME 1 and elevator banter, and the suicide mission in ME 2 nailed the sqaud vibe down so good. Dragon Age is also of course a richer rpg and more traditional, hardcore rpg nerds would obviously love it more no doubt. Plus the orgin stories were a great addition as well.
But overall, there is just no comparison, ME has it all and much better IMO.
Dragon Age = Better RPG
Mass Effects = Better experience

Mass Effect. The story is more developed, the characters are much more easily related to ... and the background to the characters.
LOL? No.
Overall I think Mass Effect might be slightly better, but Dragon Age characters blow Mass Effect characters out of the water.
For instance, how many conversations do you have with Garrus throughout the whole series so far (ME1&2)? Hardly any, especially if you don't romance him.
In terms of story, gameplay (in ME2 not ME1), and graphics I think Mass Effect is better.
But do not for a second say Mass Effect's characters are better than Dragon Ages character, as the DA characters are far more developed with both backstory, random party banter, offering advice, the list could go on. The characters are what made me enjoy Dragon Age so much, because I think they are more important to the story (well Alistair and Morrigan are basically the story and your Warden just helps them -- which is evident by the fact that the Warden is done, we now have Hawke, and Morrigan/Flemeth are returning).
To the person that said Dragon Age fans badmouth Mass Effect fans. Well on the Mass Effect boards I constantly see people badmouth Dragon Age. It goes back and forth, and it is unfortunate to say one does it more than the other. I think Dragon Age fans are just a little butt-hurt because DA2 is become Mass Effect-lite (I don't necessarily agree, but that is what a lot of people are saying).
Personally, I greatly enjoy both games. I liked Dragon Age more than Mass Effect 1, but I think Mass Effect 2 are about equel Dragon Age, and as such the mass effect series in my mind is slightly better, we will just have to see what DA2 has in store.
Just like others have said:
Dragon Age is a better RPG
Mass Effect 2 is a better game with some RPG aspects.
But me personally, I think I prefer DA slightly more (very slightly) than ME2... and both are far head of ME1 (all ME1 had going for it was the story).

I felt there were really no intra-party consequences to certain choices because of that. I just can't connect to DA like I did ME. I have never even considered buying the books because of that.
Just want to say Beocat, there can be intra-party consequences if you pick the right options. Don't want to spoil anything, but it can happen.
And you should try the books, they take place before the game does, and David Gaider does a brilliant job with them.

Personally, Mass Effect is by far more enjoyable for several reasons. I am a sci-fi nerd so it appeals to my sensabilities, I am also really burned out on fantasy in general. I am not big on having to pause the action to select abilities, I can tollerate it on ME because I don't have to do it it very often and the interface is better, but the amount of micromanagement in DA is really more than I can take.
I think ME does a better job of striking a balance between action and storytelling. DA is just to conversation heavy and has way to much pointless travel and messenger quests. It's not a pure RPG thing on my part either as I loved NWN and KotOR, I just think DA does too much to keep you out of the action. Plus I didn't really care for any of the companion characters in DA (Morigan and Alastair just annoyed the crap out of me), whereas I like almost all the ones in the ME games.
