So I played awakening, thinking i was going to have an experience of similar high quality to DAO. But i was really disappointed. The dialogue is crappy, oghren is reduced to (bad, cliche) comedic relief and the storyline is very shallow. i couldn't play more than a few hours, i was pretty disillusioned when i went from DAO to awakenings. but i don't see this sentiment expressed by many other people. Please show me some sign this isn't what satisfies bioware fans and gamers in general these days.

Yes! Definitely. I was so bored by the end that I uninstalled it and gave away.
IMHO they just tried to follow in the footsteps of the great game instead of being creative. And ended up small.

I'm in total agreement with you. From what I heard, they were forced to rush the expansion because they wanted more time to work on DA2. They were forced to cut a lot of content out just to be able to push the game out. I believe they even confirmed that themselves, but again, it was a while ago.

I agree in come cases. I also won't get started on the bugs, because that goes without saying.
For example, Oghren degenerated into that alcoholic and lecherous mass of his former self. I see what they wanted to do with him, but they kinda jumped the shark by turning his negative qualities up to 11.

Wynne didn't feel like an old friend and war buddy, but more like a middle school teacher whom you met after god knows how many years. I felt little to no attachement to her when she appeared.

Many NPC models were meh and uninspired. A lot of them felt very rushed. Some were outright terrible. I present to you Lady Liza Packton:

Just WHAT is IT?!

There was however, one thing that I loved about Awakening. It was the music. The battle themes were quite nice and more memorable than those in Origins. I'm also a big fan of the level-up tune, now that they added bagpipes to it. It sounds so much better imo.

I've seen real people that look much worse than this one.  In fact, I used to work with someone that would make Liza here look pretty. :P

The bugs are what get to me. As an expansion, I thought it was pretty fun, but some of the bugs killed some of the experiance. Like Velanna's exile, etc.

I disliked the brief cameo appearances, as they seem to diminish the former appearances and relationships. But I truly enjoyed the major storyline and associated side quests.

Agreed. nice story but lacks critical links with DAO. E.g Alistair's status at the end of DAO, hope you know what i am talking about.

On my 2 playtroughs (as an imported Warden), I hadn't experienced neither Velanna's Exile, nor the Silverite Mines glitches so far. Maybe I was lucky, or maybe I haven't played it enough. I missed Sigrun's quest on my 1st play, but did not notice whether it was due to the glich or little approval (I picked her up last).
The only glitches that I noticed always happened were the "frozen hands" after defeating the Withered and locked animation in mid run for companions (at least once per playtrough). I also had a darkspawn sheild flipping around when on my Warden's back (happened once only).
While pretty minor, these glitches are pretty damn annoying (especially the frozen hands one).

By the way, is Velanna's Exile a very common glitch to your knowlege?

I really enjoy Awakening's for some reason, perhaps rebuilding the order is more my style than defeating the Blight. I've only experienced the Silverite Mine bug thus far, and that was on my first run through of Awakenings. Overall the only thing that really seems disappointing about Awakenings is the fact it's so brief in comparison to the first.

I thought it was dissipointing how they changed how the dialouge worked(not being able to open a conversation whenever you want) other than that I enjoyed it. Plus, some of the armor and weapons were awesome, like the Golum Shell Armor and Vigilance.

It really depends on what your looking for in the game. If you play because your really into character interaction and seeing your descisions matter, than yea, this game pretty much blows sticky donkey dick. If you just wanna kill some darkspawn and get some treaure than it was pretty good.

Personally I thought it was garbage and I feel utterly cheated out of my money. I loathed the new talk system, the idea that I have to click on a whell barrow in order to talk to one of my companions was so mind bogglingly stupid I wnated to rip my hair out. Plus the continuinity was shot to hell. My Character was Queen of Fereldan so why on eath she was running around doind the guards jobs for them while they hung out at the gate I couldn't fathom.

Origins was this shining gem that fell from the heavens, I've played it over and over and I still love it...and this..this Awakening is like somone smeared bear **** inside my xbox and told me to play it.

Finished Awakening, overall a decent expansion. But definitely can feel the influence of EA rushing Bioware to get the game released. A few aspects of the game were not polished and felt rushed, such as the vendors in Amaranthine market area did not have voice-over greeting and animation. Also, not enough dialogue with companions. And the epilogue did not have any voice work, just reading.

The extreme glitch / bug for the Silverite Mine was inexcusable and should have been fixed with the latest update.

The expansions Hordes of the Underdark for Neverwinter Nights, Mask of the Betrayer for NWN 2 and Throne of Bhaal for Baldur's Gate II were far superior to this expansion. I know it is a business, but darn EA, quit rushing the creative process.

Not an epic fail, but rushed. Dragon Age Origins with Respec Mod and JBTextures I would give 95 or so rating and Awakening I would rate about 78 or so. Also, so far I have enjoyed the DLC for Origins more than I enjoyed Awakening.

For the most part I liked Awakenings.  I enjoyed the story, but felt more could have been done with it for the price.  It was obvious it was a rushed product.  I have to agree, I really didn't  like the new dialogue system, the surprise cameo and how odd that felt.  I also ran into the problem with a party member from before, I've since learned a new trick to help with this.

I never had any of the bugs before until I had to reinstall the game because I couldn't get 1.04 to install.  Now I have the bug for the silverite mine.  This is why I feel they need to make the older patches available, I can't help feel this will help cure alot of the problems that people are having. I think the smart thing for players to do is make a seperate copy and save to independent storage when the patches come out.  I really wish they would make the older patches available.

I'm also very worried since they have moved onto DA2 they won't ever properly patch this game fully.

Anyone have any links to get the old patches?

Lower? Yes. Way lower? No.

In my opinion it was similar quality, just a little bit lower. I like meeting new people and probably would have been bored had all my old buddies from Origins returned. It showed what a fast-paced BioWare game would be like, and added much to Origins IMO. The game was easier, but just put it up a difficulty. If you are one of the ones who cake walked Nightmare, then you need to play Demon Souls or some other appropriately more difficult game. Or realize that most people played Origins for it's story first and combat second.

I loved Awakening. It was better than all the other DLC by far. Besides it's basically 1/2 of your Warden's adventure. I really hope that they make an expansion for DA2. I'm even hoping for one for ME2 but doubt it.

I was disappointed here.

As it stands I'm glad their making the Ultimate pack so I can finally own a copy of Dragon Age ( I had borrowed it from a friend)

In my 2 full playthroughs of the game only once did I feel like playing Awakening the 2nd time around I just had no desire to.

Agreed. It really felt like a seperate game at times, the cameos felt like an afterthought thrown in last minute to make people happy. Considering the bugs and lack of depth the price was also annoying, I mean you can pick up origins some places for cheaper than the expansion which still hasn't dropped in price. I played through twice and really have no interest i playing through again, it just felt lacking in depth overall, not to mention the coolest armor and sword are bugged (armor if you're human, sword for all races) if you have wardens keep installed, and short of releasing a free dlc for the fixes it will never be fixed. It's all the little things that add up to take away from it.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums, I decided to sign up because I thouroghly enjoyed DAO and decided to purchase DAA, but I'm about a third of the way through noticing an emptyness I did not experience in DAO, no camp, no real companion interraction, it certainly has much less of an RPG element compared to DAO, it's not bad but could have been better.

While I'm here, I also noted that after completing DAO the map is locked in all areas accept for DLC content, does this mean if I want to explore DAO again I have to pay for more content?(or start a new game), I'll admit up front I'm against the idea of a locked map(that I've already explored!) that can only be opened by purchasing DLC, I hope DA2 is a more open world experience.

Yeah, I think once you hit post coronation you can only hit DLC areas, but there's plenty of fan made adventures that you can use also.

As for Awakening itself, I was let down by it for much the same reasons other people did. Which is sad, because the first bit (reclaiming the Vigil from the darkspawn, the first time you encounter the Withering talking to Varel) had quite an impact. But then it just went downhill.

And for my HNF queen, having a brief, lackluster cameo of Alistair was worse than no cameo at all.

I only recently got to play the full game for the first time and without a pause continued with the addon. And yes, I noticed that the overall quality was taking a step or two back. Since I played both installments in one fluent go and played both for the first time, I think that gives me a rather objective few.
I read that BioWare was defending the very short playtime (in relation) with intense gameplay. However, the addon did not appear any more intense than Origins, rather the opposite. Since it is so short, it became really hard for me to get any attachment to the characters except for Ohgren, who was in both. The short play time made things appear very rushed too. The drastic mindshift of Nathaniel (is it?) was just extremely wierd and made the whole character, which was boring to begin with, totally unbelievable. Also not beeing able to talk to my party when I wanted to was...uncomfortable. There was also just a single of those OMGWTF moments where you stare at the screen and think about which choice is the lesser evil. Those are an important factor for intensity and Awakening did not improve on that matter at all.
And one should not forget the partly gamebreaking bugs in Awakening that make you replay several hours with an earlier save, trying to avoid the bug.
The only thing which really improved was the environments. Without doubt, these have a higher average quality and diversity than those in Origins, but that is about all for the positive changes.
It is still an entertaining addon, but I can see a clear fall in quality when compared to the original game.

well I agree with ya alittle, but I guess people here, in a social site for bioware makes it a ceespool for their own fan boys. Still there are a few innovations, the inventory is improved and is more organized, those were one of the first things I notice right away. This surprised me because the original inventory (at times a hassle at times) was already fantastic, and I thought it was the best inventory I saw in a game yet, and some how they improved it, I don't know how they did, but I love what they did in that aspect. Additional classes and powers really emplify what profession you had, tweak them in a good way. In some ways if bioware really focused on awakening, it could of really been, maybe the next best game in the series. Even though they say its an expansion. From playing the game it seemed more like a squel then an expansion. Some of your choices counts, and translate little. But everything seem cut aburbly as if they stop everything and decided to just ship whatever development state the project it was in. And it shows. With the limited character dialogue and interaction, Initally glitches in its release, and non transfering of their own DLCs in this new game adventure. Something smelled very fishy.

Now for whatever reason bioware said why they did that is bull. Plain and simply, I predict they did all that because they cut the awakening project, so they can get to work on Dragon Age 2. Think about it for a sec. Awakening with all the things I mentioned above was rushed. And Dragon Age 2 looks ridcually different from Origins and Awakening. From the graphics, armor, and even the darkspawn. Its as if they scraped the old game, so they can make a new game that had more blood and interaction in fighting. Even though they said they still based the game on this old mechanics of Origins. The demo, and the concept art shows this to be a completely new game, probably different from the old game of origins. Version 2.0. Dragon Age 1 was a smash hit, but can you honestly tell me they knew that or was planing to make this a saga series like Mass Effect. I don't think so.

I find it sad now a days there isn't people in the middle anymore when it comes to being objective with cristism. I as a fan can still love bioware in what they do, but now always love game and work they do. And still be able to say honestly weather a game delievered or now. In ways Origins is a big beast, and whatever sqeal would come out, would have some big shoes to fill. But Awakening had the means and potential to be just as great as origins, if not better. Games are not easy to make, and with limited resources, it be a miracle if the game is any good. But did Awakening had that problem...? idk. But at the end of the day, even with those things, what matters is if the game delievers, (Or whats the point?) and sadly this game does not deliever.

PS-I wouldn't have mind if awakening didn't have the same quality as origins, as long as they were able to transfer their own DLC. For the console. But someone on PC was able to do it. Maybe the Xbox network is more complicated then PC. But if a studio can even transfer its own DLC in its own game, that should send some warning red flags, that the game...... there maybe something wrong, maybe. Plus how can you now able to transfer own content, even the stuff you make is even alien to you....? idk This game, just gives me mixed vibes.

Awakening was buggy, over-priced, and the story felt rushed. The companions weren't fleshed out, their interactions felt tacked on, and their personal quests were practically thrown at you within 10 seconds of meeting them. Upgrading Vigil's Keep was highly disappointing (I was expecting something akin to the keep upgrading in Neverwinter Nights 2), and the layout of the keep just wasn't thought through. (If your Warden did not have the Runekeeping profession, then you were required to buy the materials -inside- the keep, grab Anders, and then travel -outside- the keep to craft. If you ran out of materials then you had to go back -inside-, grab more, then go back out. I mean, seriously?)

And the bugs are just unforgivable. Fine, sure, new games are going to have bugs, I know that. (Albeit I didn't come across any playing Origins) But this long after launch with no patch? There's no excuse.

The Silverite Mines bug was especially painful the first time I came across it.
Not being able to bring certain DLC with you when importing your character.
The smugglers quests in Amaranthine that you automatically fail if you accidentally take both at the same time.

The list goes on.

It's a real slap in the face to anyone who bought the expansion. More combat was nice, sure, but it's pretty clear that they just threw this together as quickly as possible. =/

Yes, it does not have the same quality as Origins, and yes, it was considerably worse yet it still is a lot better than most other games out there at the moment. Fair enough.

Just started playing Awakening - loving it so far. My only problem so far has been my reunion with Wynne - very rushed and not very emotional. But still not seen any quality issues (yet!) that make it way lower like the OP suggests.

Dragon Age Origins is a complete game... and Awakening is an expansion of that game... so yes the quality is not as good...

K, I've read this sentiment a few times and I fail to understand it.  Just because something is an expansion is not an excuse for lower quality or a less entertaining storyline.  In BG you had Tales of the Swordcoast and in BG II you had the Throne of Bhaal, both of which were actually either just as good or better than the original games though shorter in length.  They managed entertaining quests, no loss of NPC interaction and added hours of enjoyment.  Where applicable the same proved true of NWN.

That is exactly what an expansion pack should be.

Unfortunately Awakenings fell short in every aspect.
