I have had no issues with drivers- 9.12, 10.3, 10.5, 10.7
I installed 10.8 because it had alot of improvements I was interested in like those for open GL and Starcraft settings being applied properly in the driver control center. However, most games worked fine but for some reason it cause jerking and hitching too annoying to ignore in Dragon Age.
I run on Core i7 940 "bloomfield", Corsair XMS 3 TRi-Chan. RAM, and a Sapphire Radeon HD 4870x2.
normally I run it a 1920x1080 with all graphics detail max, AA max, Vartical sync on (60hz), and Frame buffer effects on.
Alls well. 10.8 just chugged like mess. Anyone else have this I just rolled back to 10.7 and all was good again? but does anyone have 10.8 working. I think I should have tried re-installing again, but I don't like rummiging with video drivers too much. seems like thats when issues pop up. I use a clean re-install of drivers and use Driver cleaner PRO.
any comments greatly appreciated.

DA:O is not the only game having issue with 10.8 according to several user comments on guru3d.com and rage3d.com forums.

I've got 10.8 and I can't even start the game. Do you have 1.04 installed? And how do you downgarde drivers?

Thank you for the input.
EmonCousland- I do have Patch 1.04 installed, and am now using Cat.10.7. As said by other response here and my own and other user experiences with 10.8 many reported having issues with several games. It intended to have improvements to the video playback portion of the drivers, like .mpegs, MKVs, DivX, H264 Blu Ray etc.which were already dynamite for me. Tt supposedly gave improvements to a few 4800 series titles and 5000 series as well, but Dragon Age DOES NOT like Catalyst 10.8. I have used every driver since 8.2 and all would run the game on my HD 4870x2. Some would perform better than others. All were playable though. 10.8 had terribly annoying chopping, frame jumps, and hitching.
So far the two best are 10.7 & 10.5 in that order.
TO ROLL BACK or downgrade a driver:
To do this properly you must have a clean removal of the installed driver.
I suggest you download a video driver removal program such as Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper. I use DC Pro it is easy and works best. You will use the windows install/remove software program and the catalyst uninstall manager initially but after reboot. DC Pro deep cleans your registry of any invalid driver entries that were missed. ATI uninstall utility always misses a few!
1.) Download and install The Driver cleaner.
2.) GO TO add/remove programs> Find ATI Catalyst uninstall manager and click remove or change depending on your windows version. Click Express uninstall ALL ATI drivers and the CCC.
3. ) Also Remove any Catalyst X-fire app profiles if you are using them for that version.
4.) RESTART
5.) Launch and Use the cleaner - it has a search menu to add drivers-scroll down it and select add to anything labled ATI. ex ATI WDM, ATI DRIVER, ATI CCC, etc.
6.) Hit Clean and wait until it says finish, then close-notice it will list the details of any stray leftover files. If you need any help PLEASE read the help files with the program. IT is very very easy to use.
7.) Now install the last driver you had that ran your games the best for you, for me it is 10.7 and install it.
8.) RESTART
9.) ADJUST display if necessary and test to ensure the drivers took sucessfully. I have had 0 problems using this method.
** YOU DON'T have to use a Driver cleaner and just use the ATI Un-Install utility and it could work fine with just that un-installing it, but the DC PRO makes the re-install clean and with virtually no chance of different portions of drivers or broken files in the registry corrupting your driver re-installation.
Questions ask I will try to clarify any misunderstandings

@EmonCousland- I am glad the method helped. It has been something I learned and used for years it is reccommended by many. Glad you are playing again. I am glad to get other DA:O fans like us back to gaming. Video drivers can spoil a good time if something goes wrong in install or they have a bug for a certain game. Congrats my friend.

Res'ing an old thread as I'd like to say thanks as well. I knew about DriverSweeper, but was wondering if anyone else was having the awful problems in DAO with those new drivers. I had exactly the same problem with 10.8 on my VaporX 4890. Chugging and artefacts galore.
I also had RIDICULOUSLY high idle temps with 10.8 which is probably the reason why I had artefacts O.o
Did either of you have an increase in idle temps using 10.8?
I've rolled back to 10.7 now.

I have used 10.9a ( a hotfix for HD4870x20 then went to 10.12 w/ CCC2. 10.12 worked , but lost performance and was not as stable and the graphics effects were muddy and aliased even with AA on. I rolled back to 10.9a which is (in my opinion) the best for HD4870x2 radeons even if it has a couple bugs stll. It is great overall though.
