The game works for 98.73 percent of users running it on a PC. The problem is with your computer.
98%? From what I can tell on these forums, yeah thats about the failure rate for this title. And I hate to break it to you, but its not working AT ALL or randomly crashes for far too many people to pushed off as "The problem is with your computer." Clearly you must work 1st line software support somewhere, as this is their standard line.
While I'll stop short of demanding a refund (because in the end, if they screw us, someone will sue them) it does appear as if someone cut one too many corners in Q.A.Testing.
I have a lot of faith in Bioware, and in all the years I've been buying their games, they've never burned me. Here's hoping their devs release they left some silly compiler directive switched on or some such silliness.
I'm willing to be patient, but not infinitely so. I do agree, at the moment, the product, IS defective. Its your choice if you wanna wait it out or not.

Ok, couple more questions and I'll offer another suggestion.
First, do you have the EADM installed and running? ( you did use the EADM to install right?)
If you do, when you navigate to
C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\activation\\
is activation.exe there?

Also running vista, but, running sweet as nut - no problems, I know I must be one of the lucky few, format and re-install vista normally works, not something I had to do though

Yes. The EA Download manager. Is that how you installed the game or was it a Direct 2 Drive install?

Ok. then we need to try something else first. Replace the modified EACore file with the one you backed up.
Download the EADM:
http://eastore.ea.com/eadm
Install it and then run it. Click the login tab and then log in to your EA account. Should be the same account you use to login here. Next click the activation tab. Activate your copy using the Key provided to you by Direct 2 Drive. Next goto downloads and it should show up as already downloaded with the option to play. Click there and see if it plays.

Hey. No problem friend. I am and would love the Schnaps! But since thats likely expensive. Do me a favor here. Change the name of your OP Thread to something along the lines of D2D configurations error fix. and then post the fix as the Original Post. Hope you enjoy the game.

I would just to be safe. The blank file is a bandaide fix. So, replace it and if it breaks it then just delete the contents of the ini again. Best to keep it though just in case it needs it for a future patch or something.

That looks good just take the eacore stuff out and leave:
Download the EADM:
http://eastore.ea.com/eadm
Install
it and then run it. Click the login tab and then log in to your
EA account. Should be the same account you use to login here. Next
click the activation tab. Activate your copy using the Key provided to
you by Direct 2 Drive. Next goto downloads and it should show up as
already downloaded with the option to play.

Unless the game didn't work when you restored the original file. If it did then that parts not needed. Thanks Topper for changing the OP. I know you're probably dieing to just go play. haha

I ran into the same problem, DD distrib, Vista x64 SP1, multiple reinstalls due to "The game cannot launch due to misconfiguration". Google searches brought nothing except solutions mentioned here, however the culprit for me is that if I install the EADM it seems that it's install also is not complete.
EACore_App.ini in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Electronic Arts\\EADownloadManager - paths are relative, all correct except the last one - it points to "EADownloadManager\\EADownloadManager.exe" which is not present.
EACore_App.ini in game's ship_bin - paths are absolute, point to Program files (x86) folder, however "activation/activation.exe" is absent.
