Is Geralt of Rivia a Mary Sue too? Im familiarizing myself with the term, I wasnt aware of it until recently...
sorry for OFF TOPIC....
Mary Sue - A female character who can do practically anything and everything, and/or a female character born from a canonical family in anime, manga or movies/books, and is either a prodigy, or can do practically anything and often does, with little trouble, whereas others have had trouble.
Marty Stu/Gary Sue - The same as above, only male.
Geralt of Rivia is not a Mary Sue because he cannot do everything, and can often overcome obstacles and things, but also encounters often extreme obstacles or, for example in the Developer Walkthrough, gets captured or otherwise. A Mary Sue can still get captured, but getting out is not difficult because of some superspeshul ability, or it's not hard because the bad guys 'suddenly' become incompetant. Geralt has had a good deal of experience with this kind of thing, so it's to be expected for him to be able to deal with it easier, though the enemies are still difficult at times.
A main character is not exempt from this, but for all intents and purposes, Geralt is able to do things he can because he's quite experienced, vs. a mary sue who has not had to do a hard thing in his/her life.
Examples: Someone who has the last name of 'Potter.' but goes through Hogwarts with ease, or someone who can do high-level spells without any trouble, without any previous experience with it. Etc.
Examples of Mary Sues with family names: People with last names like Uchiha, Uzumaki, or others like Potter, Granger, and more, tend to fall into this category.
Examples of possible non-Mary sues if developed correctly: Someone with the simple last name of, say, Hyuuga, if developed CORRECTLY and has difficulty in doing things, or otherwise, can be a good character, with flaws as well as merits. Many people assume anyone with a canon last name, despite that family having many children and likely not stopping, are mary sues, but they can be just as good as any other Original Characters.
Main Characters are never exempt from this either, judging by the case of Twilight.
Drizzt Do'Urden is a Mary Sue because he overcomes things with, at best, 'mild' difficulty. You can call that 'experience' but I don't. His exploits for a DnD/Forgotten Realms character may be somewhat realistic, and that would be fine..
...if his exploits weren't outrageous, and his luck completely unreasonably good. He may face obstacles in the form of interaction, but otherwise, his exploits have gone WAY past the point of plausibility. He's done too much to consider him anything but a Canon Sue -- aka A Main character who has progressed into Mary Sue territory.
If that's not explaining it too much, I can provide you with this link:
