I think Bioware is afraid of giving the very young male (mainly console players) target they are seeking so desperately to hook up a "mixed idea" of the game, or that they will scare them away if they show a woman as Hawke...

Sadly, marketing guys always seem to view their targets like the dumbest people on earth. You see it all the time.

EA has recently released a promotional video for Dead Space 2: they gather a bunch of middle aged moms from "conservative middle America" and then show them some footage of the "gritty" and shocking details of the game. Apparently, all women look shocked and terrified (very understanding reaction). Then the trailer finishes with; "Dead Space 2; its everything you love in a game. Because Your Mom hates it "

I get (I guess...) that its a joke (the kind of sick joke some 12 year olds would appreciate) but I think its utterly childish... And if its not a joke, whats the point of marketing a game like that when its rated M (for mature)? There you have your marketing geniuses 101...

I pretty much have planned out what my Hawke will like: me.
Sort of like this, I suppose (not a perfect likeness, my drawing ability is limited)

Hope y'all don't mind Fenris

I must say that I like M!Hawkes voice and will play one or two rounds with him but that still doesn't change the fact that I'll start the game with F!Hawke =) I've heard snippets of F!Hawkes voice when I tried the demo but that was ages ago and I really really want more =) Liked the voice but I really can't place it, never been good at that sort of thing.

I hope that they will put something up with her soon. But if it was just down to the fact that they feel it would confuse possible customers not hanging in the forum. How would you market it? "Who is your Hawke" perhaps with clips of both of them as mages, rouges and such. Perhaps that is too messy. If they don't want to all video on us I would love to have some special wallpaper or anything with her really =)

@Margaret: That mage Hawke is amazing.

I'm looking forward to seeing some Fem!Hawke - I believe Mike said he hoped we'd see some in the next Dev diary, which will hopefully be before the mysterious 2/1/11 date. Like SilentK said, though, I do really like the M!Hawke voice so I will definitely be playing at least a round as him. Fem!Hawke will be my main, though - mage first run, rogue second, unless I really like teh warrior play, in which case I'll go with that. That is unless for some reason I *really hate* her voice, which I can't see happening but its possible.

That said, knowing the way markettign has been going, when we finally do hear her, it'll probably be in some diabolical flirt scene ala fem!Shep and Jacob.

Breaking News: Lady Hawke had a serious discussion with Lead Designer Mike Laidlaw and John Epler.

This is the scenario of what took place.

Lady Hawke interrupted Lead Designer Mike Laidlaw just as he was about to say something to John Epler. His mouth is still ajar and his index finger is still pointing at Mr. Epler.

Lady Hawke: “You know what Lead Designer; it’s about time we had a serious talk.” (Working her baby blues to her advantage)

Mike Laidlaw: “Yes, Ms. Hawke, what’s on your mind?” (He finally recomposes himself, opens his stance, and places his left arm across his chest. His right elbow rests on his left hand while he looks attentively at her, holding his chin with his right hand; his index finger, slightly bent, barely touches his bottom lip).

Lady Hawke: “There are a lot of talks among my fans (Squinting her baby blues in a thoughtful manner as she studies his face for any reaction. Seeing none, she continues.). They really want to see a teaser trailer of me and they want to hear me speak in it.” (She continues to watch him as she mentally takes notes.)

Mike Laidlaw: (keeping the same composure, responds warmly and calmly) “Well, Ms. Hawke, we are working on it, trust me. You, know too well what’s been happening here…” (She interrupts him in mid-sentence.)

Lady Hawke: “Yes, I do know what is happening here, but this does not explain anything to me. (Shifting her gaze, her baby blues somewhat change hues to a darker shade). They want to see me, can we at least…?” (Lead Designer Mike Laidlaw, interjects, still keeping the same relax look and tone).

Mike Laidlaw: “As I was saying, you know how hectic these past few months have been and we are working double time because we have a deadline to meet…”

Lady Hawke: “I don’t want to disappoint them. They also want to know about my Love Interests (LIs). Who will be the lucky fellows? Will it be the irresistible Varric and his glorious chest hair, handsome Sebastian and his to die for baby blues and his ‘hawt’ accent, Anders or someone deliciously new with lots of awesome flavors? Mind you I want nothing short of “awesome sauce.” (She gives him an intense look.)

Mike Laidlaw: “Ms. Hawke, you know that we always deliver. Believe me, you will not be disappointed.” (He moves his head back and chuckles lightly; he tucks his right arm into his left one across his chest.)

Lady Hawke:
The Ladies also want to know if Merrill, Aveline, and Cassandra are also possible LIs.

Mike Laidlaw:
(glances at John Epler and then looks back at her unflappably) “That’s a question for the writers. You know where their offices are.” (He smiles warmly, exchanging looks with John Epler who in turn grins back.)

Lady Hawke: (She continues.) “Some of my fans also desire to know if there is a scene where my love interest and I go on a date and afterwards bathe-tastefully done-under the stars.”

Mike Laidlaw: (glances towards John Epler. They exchange looks, which Lady Hawke could not make anything out of; she stills note that down.)

John Epler: (looks at his desk, then at his computer monitor). “Mm, isn’t that a spoiler Ms. Hawke? If we had that in the game, do you want your fans to know about that before hand?”

Lady Hawke:
“I guess … not. (She has a serious look about her as she changes her stance, she then smiles.) I would rather it be a surprise myself, if that was added, it would only add a bit of flair because my story has awesomeness written all over it.”

Mike Laidlaw: “You are the sexiest, the most beautiful, and interesting (badass) woman in video games. There is no comparison, none at all.”

Lady Hawke: “You got that right.” (She grins gloatingly, feeling ten feet tall because her lore, her story is truly epic, and she is indeed very proud of that.). Carry on gentlemen.” (She whistles a tune as she walks away, proudly.)

Please stay tune for other exchanges with the rest of the team. Until next episode, stay safe--- Lilacs.  Posted Image

Great that you wrote that Eudaemonium, knew that I had heard something about F!Hawke perhaps making an appearance soon and that must have been it. Keeping all my fingers crossed.

About ME, I tried to flirt with Jacob and my F!Shep but I always got the feeling that he rather keep the relationship focused on the job and that I was being a really really creepy boss for trying to hit on him all the time. Ended up with Thane in stead =)

Back on topic. What will your first F!Hawke be like? I know that I will start out as a mage and I'm thinking of trying out the comedy mask as much as possible. I'm interested in seeing how the game reacts to all the different personalities but at the moment I really want to see a fun girl. Perhaps it is a bit of defense mechanism, mages are really not the most popular people in Thedas. I could see my little mage turning to humor to make the world a more bearable place. Hm... pondering.

I don't know whether I want to be a mage or a rogue. On one hand, Carver and giant hands. On the other, swords and hoods...hmm...
My Hawke's going to be flirty, sarcastic, and sometimes a jerk.

I've pretty-much settled on a mage, but rogue is coming in at close second. Its ironic, really, because I always used to play warriors. I'm definitely going to go the super-snark option though, probably with a bit of diplomacy and occasional aggression. That said, maybe I should save the dominant snark/humour mode for the rogue and go with one of the others. Maybe I'll play an angry blood mage.

@SilentK: Just to clarify what I recall Mike saying, he said that if he got his way we'd hear Fem!Hawke before the mysterious 2/1/11 date (and whatever the heck it actually is). I interpreted this as being the next dev diary, but it might not be. Of course its always possible we won't hear her by then, but it does seem to be on the agenda at least.

The parody aside, yes Lead Designer Mike Laidlaw did state that there are more goodies in store for next month; hence, I am hoping that more information about Lady Hawke is in that agenda. Optimism never hurts.

Part II

News of the Hour: An exchange with the writers:  Exclusive, read all about it.

(David Gaider:  (walks towards the coffee maker, fills his coffee cup halfway, chuckles to himself and then he says out loud.) “Hey, the coffee maker is almost empty.  We need more fans tears.“)

(The writing team who is sitting at the round table laughs in unison)

(Mary Kirby: “Oh (still laughing), you simply delight in torturing the fans, don’t you?")

(David Gaider:  “It is not I who tortures them; they do it themselves.  They twist anything I say to their heart's content and satisfaction and they make themselves believe it; when I attempt to clarify the situation, they go into fits.  There is nothing I can do about that.”  (He laughs heartily.))

(Sheryl Chee: (changing  the subject) "Isabela  is darn sexy  and I’ve been thinking that maybe I should add a hot date to her story, you know just the two of them, enjoying each other’s company if you know what I mean (she grins, and winks at Ms. Kirby who seems to be quite interested in the idea.”))

(Mary Kirby:  “I’ve been thinking the same thing, too, and I’ve been mulling that very idea for quite some time now.  I want to write that in for Varric.  (She seems in thought; images of the Varric’s thread flash briefly in her mind.).  Merrill is the kind of girl who would like that sort of thing.  I think I should do just that.”)

(Jennifer Helpler:  (chimes in)  “The fans will squee for eternity if they could go on a date with ‘Seb’ let alone bathe under the stars with him.”)

(Lukas Kristjanson: “I don’t know about you guys…”)

(David Gaider: (after sitting comfortably in a nearby chair, states forcefully, interrupting them.) “Nah, they don’t deserve any such privileges… what?!  A date, bathing?  Are you out of your minds?  No, no, kiddos, none of that stuff, and that’s final.")

Ms. Hawke (who has been listening to these exchanges at an audible range) walks in at that very moment and walks straight towards the Lead Writer.  She pulls out her dagger, which she carries on the outside of her left boot; she places it in front of his throat, her left hand gripping the side of his chair.

Ms. Hawke:  “Oh, you don’t think I should go out on a date with my LI, do you?”

David Gaider:  (very relax for someone in his position, responds nonchalantly) Even though you have a feline’s grace Ms. Hawke, I did hear you (He continues in the same tone), so please relax.”

Ms Hawke: (she releases her grip, but her dagger still points at his throat)

David Gaider:  “I mean completely relax (looking at the dagger).”

Ms. Hawke:  (she steps back, sheathes the dagger, then folds her arms across her chest) “Fair enough.  So what’s the real deal (she utters still somewhat unconvinced)?”

David Gaider: (noting her tone)”The thing is Ms. Hawke, if we did allow you to have that, what about the male fans ? They would want the same thing.”

Ms. Hawke:  “I am not here on their behalf.  Anyway, I am sure they have that “little” privilege already.  The field needs leveling in that department: parity and equity are called for this time around.  Don’t you agree writers?  (She thought very quickly and then states assuredly).  The ideal thing to do is to let Garrett and me have that “small” addition.  It may not enhance our story much, but it will add another texture, thus making our story truly unique from any other games out there.”

David Gaider:  (who is listening to her discourse very intently, clears his throat) “Ms. Hawke, we have a set budget and adding additional material is not a privilege we can afford, unless you want us to cut out some of your content.  (He eyes her shrewdly before he adds).  You don’t want that do you?”

Ms. Hawke:  (after a few minutes of contemplation) “Well, it is not about content Lead Writer, and you know that.  You are a very creative bunch.  I am certain you can up with anything if you so choose.  You know that I have full confidence in your abilities.”

Sheryl Chee:  (who has been watching that little scene with glee quickly adds her thoughts on the matter) “Ms. Hawke, you know we have the fans interests at heart.  We have a delicious story for you… a story to sink your teeth into, so to speak.  What my colleague states here has merit, but that’s beside the point, isn’t it?  All I know (my colleagues, too) is that you will be pleasantly surprised with the story we have written for you.”

Ms. Hawke: “Ms. Chee, don’t I know it.  I am so looking forward to it.  Gee, I love you guys.”  (She straightens her gear, tucks a mesh of hair behind her right ear, and walks away gracefully and noiselessly.)

David Gaider:   (Looking at the members of the writing team, states grinningly.)  “Wow, what a woman!  We made her personality too strong.  (However, he already knew the answer to that.)

Sheryl Chee:  "This is our trademark at Bioware, but as lead writer, you know that too well.”  (Grinning from ear to ear, her eyes fill with mirth)

All the writers nod in unison (very proud of the story they have created for Dragon Age II), for indeed, that is what Bioware does:  Create strong female leads coupled with awesome storytelling, intense tactical combat and so much more.
