Eh, I won't go so far as to call that a contradiction - it isn't quite - but it's not like space operas have no tradition of such characters.
They're basically fantasy stories in space.  And fantasy stories are all about big powerful men and unrealistically proportioned women.

A woman in real heavy armor will look exactly like a man.
Can you tell a man or woman from their face or hair?
Breasts are indeed the best most obvious visual way of showing a person this is a female.

I don't believe its necessary for ones gender to be instantly recognisable when one is in battle.

Considering we are always ready for battle then no one should be able to recognise our gender/sex?

Unless you have an exceptionally pretty face.

I have seen my brother watching some asian dramas....those men look so much like women...even their fashion call for hair down to their shoulders sometimes.

Point?

Look guys, I've been practising fencing for about 8 years now .. And I can tell you - there ARE different chest protectors for men and women.. And yes, suprisingly, I'm one of those who have large boobs and thin waist, so it DOES happen, even among spororstwomen..

Btw .. Female version of chest protector looks like this and sizes are same as sizes of bras..

Yes but Fencing is very much different from being in the heat of battle and fighting basically a tidal wave of demonic enemies. You need to be able to move fast and hit wild & hard. Plus your waist may be thin but in media and in this game it seems it's more Size 0 + EE cup which is impossible

If I didn't know better, I'd say this is a woman. But since there is no discernable boobage on display, I must obviously be wrong.

So, medium or small breasts didn't fulfill the function of making women look feminine enough in DA:O?

That person could pass for either a male or female.

Compare it to the way female squadies where portrayed in ME1, they were all armoured in appropriate armour but then suddenly in ME2 you've got females in armour purely for the purpose of fanservice.

I know! I've been there, done it as well (historical fencing you know..)
I just wanted to say, that it's much more comfortable for women with bigger breasts to have better shaped chest protectors that's all ..

Yeah I'll buy that.  Especially about Miranda.  I'm willing to accept that Samara's "armor" is cultural or something.

There's a lot of unrealistic features in many games with both character models and armour.
IF they go without boob armor and what not women will complain they are playing are forced to play as a man.
Breasts are required to be seen as to notify a female player they are indeed playing a female.

And guess what? As a woman who hates the massive honkers female avatars usually have, I am forced to play as a man. I find it easier to relate to relate to the male avatars in ME and DA:O. Certainly, I have played the female side in order to see the more appealing female-only content (eg Garrus romance) but only if I can strap my character into massive armour that covers her bodyshape as much as possible. (And don't get me started on the high-pitched screechy voicesets the human females have in Origins. Gah).

Narrow shoulders, thin neck. Those were the most obvious clues to me. But really, are we actually arguing for more androgyny in our fantasy RPGs or is that just an extreme example?

We can have boobs, right guys? Please?

The scientific community has put forwards various theories about the reason behind "soft femininity" in females such as that it may be a biological trait designed to invoke a sense of child-like vulnerability. It has also been proposed that breasts differentiate the women from the children, hence their symbolism as a sexual attribute.

This is potentially where the "unrealistic" and "weak" female ideal comes from.

Wish I could find that paper. Was probably in a Scientific American though it may have been on a website. I'm not talking about psudo-science, here, but people looking at real differences between the sexes and I believe there are more than people give credit for. I'm not even remotely a chauvinist and I believe in modern times we can largely ignore or bypass this biological heritage as outdated and unnecessary, but you can't deny that males are more capable of becoming muscled than women because of larger bone structures, that relative "hardness" is generally considered more attractive in males and "softeness" more in females. This is something that crosses all cultural boundaries. It is also reflected in the sex organs.

Similarly height is definitely different between males and females. Larger males, smaller females, another indication of the a) child-like attributes and B) inspiring the protective instinct.

Inspiring protective feelings in a male would mean that he would stick around for longer and so help raise offspring, increasing survivability of the species. It also indicates a division of roles on the most basic level. Often male animals serve merely as impregnating machines. The more social mammals tend to develop harems which they protect from rival males (cats, deer, etc.) or have a leader of a social who has breading rights and is determined by his strength and skill in fighting (various monkeys, apes and dogs). This then proves his strength and abilities useful as survival traits and so these elements are passed to the young.

With the advent of larger brains it seems that higher thought processes could become involved and monogamy, a kind of relationship very rare in nature and generally restricted to birds, becomes preferable, investing a large amount of time and energy in a small number of individuals while allowing for larger and larger social groups to form (too many horny males around with no output would end up inevitably with fighting).

As I say, most of these biological processes are no longer necessary, we (particularly women) are just suffering from our biological heritage. This doesn't mean in any way that women should be portrayed in this light, I am just giving potential reasons for why these bias' exist.
