It's a fantastic game, but I think trying to categorise it into an RPG or a shooter is probably a bit too black and white. It doesn't have the depth of an RPG or the twitch of a shooter. In my opinion it's probably the closest to an interactive film I have ever played. It just flows nicely.

The cut scenes, story and music are what pushed me through it. The shooting aspect was just the means to an end. On easy, it's very easy to get through. The harder settings just seem to take longer. Also worthwhile playing through at least twice so you can really work out your character for the sequel.

Adept is one of the harder classes to play at the very beginning of the game. You have lower armor and only pistols, so you're weaker until you get the biotics up higher, and then you're nigh unstoppable. All the classes are pretty well balanced, though, so the difference isn't too drastic.

FPS= first person shooter, sure, meant to speak of shooter game in general.

Everyone seem to agree for me to buy it! It's ok then! Thank you all!

What I felt that Mass Effect lacked was a solid game play element to call its own. While it did have both FPS and RPG systems involved, I didn't see it lean to heavily to one side. Combat became very repetitive to me after the first planet in the main storyline. Dialogue was good for the quality of writing, but the choices were rather superficial to me, as some paths weren't choices at all. Side mission seemed almost like an afterthought and when you seen one blue, red or green planet, you have seen them all. I thought the ending was rather good, allowing you choices on how it plays out.

While not an entire deviation from what Bioware has done before, it does have the potential to be an interesting franchise, if not a very original one in terms of difference.

Alright, guess I'll have to check some ME wiki for classes! Thank you!

@ Icinix, the comparison to an interactive film is interesting. But films are known for their scenari, so it appeals to me all the more.

@ Bio Boy: guess I won't be able to judge that until I play the game, but ME being in a completely new setting, I'm sure there's much to do and develop for sure!
Repetitive combats and environments then?

thI'm currently replaying the game as an adept and if your playing the game on XB360 there is a glitch which allows you to wear any type of armor regardless of your class and its limitations. Which helps me out alot because i really hate light armor.

I'd definitely play on PC. BTW, in a first playthrough, I'll try to be honest and not use the glitches. :pinched:

I realize I am probably late on this thread, but I will chime in anyway. :)

I loved ME, but I also loved Jade Empire and KotOR. Icinix hit the nail on the head I believe. It's not really a great shooter, or a great RPG, but it was good at both and it sure was hard to turn off in the wee hours of the morning because of my curiosity of what I would get into next.

I played through it three times, trying both paths, plus I am a sucker for sexytime in rpgs (wow, don't get me started in regards to The Witcher).

If you like decent stories mixed in with your gaming, you should like Mass Effect.

Oh, make sure to move your plotting cursor around when scouting planets, you just might find some stuff to investigate. :)

I only decided to use that glitch since i really hate lite armor but I do plan on playing again as an adept without the glitch. This is my fourth replay of the Game and my 1st time using any glitches even though there are a couple of them.

Not too late Raanz I'm still here !

Didn't play Jade Empire nor Kotor, but played The Witcher for sure! I like romances in RPGs and in general, I love to have companions around, it makes the game feel less lonely. That's why I didn't stick to oblivion or morrowind in the end, the game felt too lonely (and well, that's not story driven but more open also).

I love stories, I like to have companions, so yes for sure, that's why ME tempted me. I was mostly afraid of the shooter part.

You seem to hint there are more sidequests than said above, anyway, I always explore all the places I can, so I think I will find them for sure.

Agreed. I often use glitches in replay, but generally nor experimenting a game for first time.

Sadly I know a few people that didn't like mass effect. I work in a game store and I recommend Mass Effect to people all the time. Its usually 50/50 which isn't bad considering the type of area I work in. Generally People buy Sports, Shooters, and action Games, rarely RPGs.

Many people are not that well educated about video game types. I suppose the deception comes from the fact they were expecting something different than the game itself. That's why it's always worth it to get some informations before buying. Sports and shooter? Why am I not astonished?

Happily, a few developers keep on creating games for our RPG thirst.

Yeah thankfully. I'm glad bioware is doing good right now otherwise i'd be waiting for Square Enix to actually release something good for once because their recent Titles have been a little lacking in many areas.

ME is a 3rd person action rpg that playes like a shooter. In fact, if you do not play it like you're serious, you will find (on normal) you get your butt handed to you alot. I had to learn the hard way. Play it like an RPG sure... but don't forget to cut enemy line of sight like you are in a shooter. Because if you don't, you will find the enemies will mop the floor with you. Don't be fooled, one or two rocket hits is enough to wipe your party. You HAVE to play ME like an action game at the very least or find yourself hitting pause to change to easy mode. I love the game personally. Once I was able to adapt to it's more action oriented tone, I had a blast customizing my characters and kicking the crap out of the geth.
The best thing about ME is the emphasis on using all of your party's abilites together to form VERY potent combos. After you get past the difficulty level of the game ( that is after you stop playing it like an rpg and start playing it like an action game), the game is a freaking blast!

To me ME played as RPG lite. I very much enjoyed the game, but I confess I don't play shooters so it took me a little bit to figure it out. The story was good enough to keep me hooked and the Universe that they have developed has a lot of potential for future games. I would recommend it even to a dedicated RPG player as a fun game (although rather short). I am looking forward to ME2 even though they seem to have taken more of a "shooter" direction with it. I think the story elements will overshadow the playstyle. I did manage to play through ME twice, the second time on hard, without having to reload a ridiculous number of times.

Also, the game has it's host of bugs. Remember to save often!

That's a Xbox 360 exclusive feature.

I have not played the Xbox version(fully). I played ME on my PC. In particular, I would not hit space or whatever key you may use to skip dialog when finished reading. It was a source of many crashes for me.

I loved ME. Played through many times using the different classes, not to mention all of my New Game+ playthroughs. Ugh, I hate to think of what will happen when Dragon Age: Origins comes out followed by ME2. There goes 2010 for me.

Also, if you haven't played KotOR or Jade Empire, I seriously suggest you get those. One thing Bioware always gets is story.

p.s. The Witcher was also tons of fun, especially on the hardest difficulty.

I would recommend KotOR and Jade Empire on top of ME as well. Both are quite cheap nowadays, although finding 'new' boxed copies is near impossible for KotOR. D2D and Steam allow digital purchases if you can't get one.

thisisme8 : 2010 does indeed appear to be a pre-emptive write off. Meh. I have no issue with that. None what so ever.

For sure.  Poor OP though, if she takes our advice and starts playing all those games, she won't leave her room for months.

Purple Lady: Let us know what you think once you've played it. You made the right call (hopefully you'll end up agreeing).

I think the mistake people are making here is assuming that development is always mechanics-driven rather than story-driven. There are certainly a lot of games where that's the case (and many of them are great, even recently), but Mass Effect strikes me as the other way around. I could be totally wrong - I'm pretty ignorant about the development of the game - but I can picture BioWare sitting down after KotOR and saying: "Ok, let's develop an original sci-fi IP. What would the universe look like? Who's our hero? What's the story?" I imagine those were the first questions. The next questions would be: "What do we need to change mechanics-wise from KotOR? What makes sense in this story, and for this universe?" Combat with heavy shooter elements would have been a pretty logical conclusion. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but there's nothing in the game itself to suggest otherwise. Typical BioWare, in other words - an effective marriage of story and mechanics.
