Mass Effect, FPS or RPG? Need advice. Should I buy it?

The cut scenes, story and music are what pushed me through it. The shooting aspect was just the means to an end. On easy, it's very easy to get through. The harder settings just seem to take longer. Also worthwhile playing through at least twice so you can really work out your character for the sequel.

While not an entire deviation from what Bioware has done before, it does have the potential to be an interesting franchise, if not a very original one in terms of difference.

Adept is one of the harder classes to play at the very beginning of the game. You have lower armor and only pistols, so you're weaker until you get the biotics up higher, and then you're nigh unstoppable. All the classes are pretty well balanced, though, so the difference isn't too drastic.
Alright, guess I'll have to check some ME wiki for classes! Thank you!
@ Icinix, the comparison to an interactive film is interesting. But films are known for their scenari, so it appeals to me all the more.
@ Bio Boy: guess I won't be able to judge that until I play the game, but ME being in a completely new setting, I'm sure there's much to do and develop for sure!
Repetitive combats and environments then?

I loved ME, but I also loved Jade Empire and KotOR. Icinix hit the nail on the head I believe. It's not really a great shooter, or a great RPG, but it was good at both and it sure was hard to turn off in the wee hours of the morning because of my curiosity of what I would get into next.
I played through it three times, trying both paths, plus I am a sucker for sexytime in rpgs (wow, don't get me started in regards to The Witcher).
If you like decent stories mixed in with your gaming, you should like Mass Effect.
Oh, make sure to move your plotting cursor around when scouting planets, you just might find some stuff to investigate.

Didn't play Jade Empire nor Kotor, but played The Witcher for sure! I like romances in RPGs and in general, I love to have companions around, it makes the game feel less lonely. That's why I didn't stick to oblivion or morrowind in the end, the game felt too lonely (and well, that's not story driven but more open also).
I love stories, I like to have companions, so yes for sure, that's why ME tempted me. I was mostly afraid of the shooter part.
You seem to hint there are more sidequests than said above, anyway, I always explore all the places I can, so I think I will find them for sure.

I only decided to use that glitch since i really hate lite armor but I do plan on playing again as an adept without the glitch. This is my fourth replay of the Game and my 1st time using any glitches even though there are a couple of them.
Agreed. I often use glitches in replay, but generally nor experimenting a game for first time.

Happily, a few developers keep on creating games for our RPG thirst.

The best thing about ME is the emphasis on using all of your party's abilites together to form VERY potent combos. After you get past the difficulty level of the game ( that is after you stop playing it like an rpg and start playing it like an action game), the game is a freaking blast!

Also, if you haven't played KotOR or Jade Empire, I seriously suggest you get those. One thing Bioware always gets is story.
p.s. The Witcher was also tons of fun, especially on the hardest difficulty.

For sure. Poor OP though, if she takes our advice and starts playing all those games, she won't leave her room for months.

I think the mistake people are making here is assuming that development is always mechanics-driven rather than story-driven. There are certainly a lot of games where that's the case (and many of them are great, even recently), but Mass Effect strikes me as the other way around. I could be totally wrong - I'm pretty ignorant about the development of the game - but I can picture BioWare sitting down after KotOR and saying: "Ok, let's develop an original sci-fi IP. What would the universe look like? Who's our hero? What's the story?" I imagine those were the first questions. The next questions would be: "What do we need to change mechanics-wise from KotOR? What makes sense in this story, and for this universe?" Combat with heavy shooter elements would have been a pretty logical conclusion. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but there's nothing in the game itself to suggest otherwise. Typical BioWare, in other words - an effective marriage of story and mechanics.
