WOW, so many new answers while I was gone! I did not expect this thread to attract such attention!

@ Draconus Kahn:

The shooter part is what I'm afraid of, played unreal once, got killed so fast, it was really frustrating. So yes, what you're speaking about is what I'm worried about. But according to you, and many others, this is not a major turndown, so thank you, and I'll give the game a try.

@TanithAeyrs

Thank you for giving your experience, gives me hope since we have the same dislike for shooters.

@Jonp382

Saving often is what I do, always... But I think that on PC, patches (official and unofficial) have certainly erased all the bugs now.

After that, yeap, I had problems in some cinematics in other games (The Witcher for instance) but the problem was random and I was able to finish the games.

@Thisisme8

Alright, will look at Kotor and Jade Empire, was not interested in Kotor because of the Starwars background... yes I know...

@wrexingcrew:

for sure I'll give my opinion, that would be at least a minimum of politness requirement after all the people taking the time to answer this thread.

Concerning the development, I sure can imagine the same. Bioware is heavily story focused, and that's why they are the best developers to me.

Buy the game. It's very FPS:ish and very little RPG:ish, but overall it's a good game. There's very little twitch gaming, so if that's your problem with FPS:s, don't worry.

I found Mass effect to be a very enjoyable game. However I do agree with LdyShayna that the re-playability with is lacking. ...

It must be a personal preference because I have start this game 5 times and completed it three times using different classes (and trying to get different achievements)

Having played thru multiple times I finally noted that there are class-specific side quests in this game.  My last play thru I came across a Citadel side quest that I had not previously run across.  And I never found side quests I had in previous play-thrus as different classes.  The main story doesn't change of course, but you can change the way you play each and every time.

I know this is totally subjective, but this is the best RPG I have ever experienced.

As far as the shooting is concerned, knock down the difficulty level which you can do any time in-game.

I hate SECUROM with passion! This st.... security programm told me to insert my NWN2 Disc inside my computer although it was already here. Prevented me from playing the game I had bought with both expansions. I actually had to download hacks to break securom and be able to play the game.

Thankfully they patched that out finally. No disk needed, no online checks, nothing. I honestly think it was done because a securom patch messed up so many people's game they couldn't play at all.

I liked ME1 mostly, but it's doubtful I'll get 2.  I do like squad-based shooters though. But the annoying constant mandatory mini-games and 90% of time spent on unc's driving a bouncing helium filled beachball aka "Mako" on mountaintops ruined a lot of my idea of fun. Oh well.

I always called ME a squad-based shooter with RPG elements from the beginning. The Devs would shoot that down, but now they are embracing that shooter with rpg elements so it seems to be less of what I really enjoy at least everything that's been talked about so far.

I loved Mass Effect. As the above said it's over the shoulder so it's not FPS..though it's very shooter-esque. However I had it on 360, and it didn't really feel like a shooter. I've tried it on the PC and it felt much more like a shooter. Still...you aren't required to aim perfectly..it's not like an FPS. Other factors come into play..stats and such...so it's more Action-RPGish maybe? Great game though, you should play it....but I'd wait now..DA:O is too close =)

Edit:  Woops I was too slow..don't get too involved unless you are able to play multiple games at once!  That game is long..so you will be delayed on DA:O unless you play em both.

I know you already  got the game but I just wanted to say my piece.

Mass Effect (PC) is one of my favorite games ever. Propably top 5 or atleast top 10 of games I have ever played. I play mostly western RPG's, shooters with the occasional RTS thrown in.  My favorite RPG is Baldur's Gate II, shooter Half-Life (the original).

I found the Mass Effect universe very interesting, the story fascinating and all the characters excellent. The great voice actors really brought them to life, special props to Jennifer Hale for voicing female Shepard.

Contrary to what most have said here I tought the combat was pretty easy on normal, just use cover and your special abilities often.  Most of the exploration side quests sucked, but you don't have to do them and the rewards aren't anything special. I only encountered 1 major bug during gameplay and that went away when I  reloaded my save.

Lets us know your thoughts on ME.

cliffnotes

1. Buy ME
2. Love ME
3. ???
4. Profit!  :P

I would also point out that you said you played a lot of shooters.  Familiarity with that type of gameplay is going to greatly impact the perceived difficulty. :)

Mass Effect combat system is essentially a third person squad based tactical shooter where you really only have three commands over your two squad mates who don't have enough sense to stay under cover unless you tell them to.

One thing I really liked about the combat system is how differently you had to approach combat depending upon your class. On the higher difficulty levels, you definitely need some specific tactics to beat the bosses and sub-bosses.

My favorite class would have to be Engineer
