Do you actually make your squad swap weapons to match defenses?

I NEVER regularly have them switch weapons. I know I can do it, I just never do. If I'm fighting a ton of armored enemies and I'm rolling with two SMG wielding characters I never bother to switch them to their pistols. About the only switching I ever do is switch the soldier classes (Grunt, Zaeed, Garrus) and the sniper (Thane) to assault rifles for the entirety of my playthroughs.

I have them switch quite frequently. Not always on standard enemies, but on things such as YMIR mechs, life is a whole lot easier when your squadmates are dealing extra damage.

I play a soldier usually with all squad ammo powers so I don't pause to switch weapons - I just use whatever hotkey is assigned to the appropriate ammo. Keeps the pace of combat where I like it.

It's not worth pausing the game to do it, IMO. I just let them use their default weapon with the exception of Garrus/Legion who I switch to sniper rifle and everyone who defaults to a shotgun to their alternate, at least when I remember.

Yes, ... Squadmates are tweaked for massive damage. Not necessarily against defences as I do let them switch their weapons based on fighting distance and enemy fire, the latter often leading to them fighting with Sniper Rifles against shielded or barriered enemies, but with more time in cover, they last longer and deal overall more damage.
And for tough enemies like Krogan or sub-bosse and above, I have them fire the respective gun!

Basically I just switch to the incisor if its available. otherwise, not at all.

Only on shotgun equipped squaddies, do i tend to switch back and forth. Even less now with the GPS.

I'd probably do it if you could hotkey it but if you have to pause the game to do it, meh. Kind of kills the momentum.

I don't really bother. I find squadmates seem to work best with a certain weapon (eg Miranda works best with the Tempest) and that this overcomes any advantage gained by using weapons appropriate to the enemy defense.

I'll have squaddies switch to the shotgun for close-in work, if they have one.

I let them use their default weapon do not bother with switching it for them.

Unless they have assault rifles or shotguns. Shotguns are special-purpose only, while there's just no reason to take them off assault rifle unless it's time to snipe.

I find my companions quite a lot more effective if I match the situation. So I do that pretty regularly, since I don't like dying a lot. I also play on high difficulty usually.

If there was a hotkey I probably would, but I went out of my way to learn to play this game without pausing for basically anything. So I'm not going to go back to pausing frequently just for whatever dps boost weapon swapping might bring.
Plus it doesn't help that I never upgrade my weapons evenly. I plan out all my playthroughs based entirely on order of upgrades for my power cooldown, my primary, and then my secondary weapon. It's common for me to have 2 weapons at 4/5 while the rest are sitting at 1 or 2 upgrades a pop until late game when I'm forced to complete the missions that have the upgrades I didn't care about earlier.

Why do we even have to tell them to switch weapons? They know what powers work against the various defenses. Shouldn't they know which weapon best fits any given situation?

I never switch their weapons for them in ME2. In ME1 I had to do it all the time though because they seemed stuck on stupid. They would equip guns they weren't trained for and I'd have to keep switching them back. AI behaved much better in ME2.

I equip the shotgun wielding classes to pistol, because they are not very good with the shotgun from what I've experienced.

Not really... I tend to just give my squadmates the weapon that 'best suits them' (e.g. shotgun for Grunt, sniper rifle for Garrus) and never, ever switch their weapon after that. I instead rely on powers or my own switched weapon to deal with enemies who need different kinds of damage to break through their protections.

Most of the time my squad mates are so ineffective at shooting things I forget they're there. I primarily bring them for their powers or ammo modifiers. They only exist to provide a faster warp explosion, or a pull/throw when i'm on cooldown.
Lately, I've become annoyed that they are even there as for some reason they've actually started shooting targets that I've just ragdolled with pull or singularity and kill them before I can throw or warp explode. Don't know what's changed in this run through, except I'm a bit off my game after finishing DA:O.
Otherwise, I just make sure they're equipped at the beginning with the right weapon and then don't even think about it.
It's more fun when they don't shoot and are just there for additional power support. I should probably see a therapist or go to a twelve step program for it...

the worst is them running in front of you while you're trying to shoot someone. they then add insult to injury by paying you out about the fact that you shot them.

I hate it most of all when they run in front of an active power like warp. There goes my cool down! It's why I often try to place them in cover myself.

I don't understand when squadmates are behind cover and they decide they need to vault over it into the open, I see that every now and then and it drives me nuts.
I used to leave them alone and let them do whatever but I've changed, I find that telling them what to do is the lesser of two evils. Move here, shoot him, overload that, do this, do that, I'm a right little miss bossy.
