I was wondering if I was the only person who never plays as MaleShep.
I tried playng as MaleShep on two occasions and both time I quit playing after about three hours.
The reason for this is because of MaleShep's VA. In alot of games voice acting is not too important, but considering what kind of game ME is, voice actng IS important.
Whenever I hear FemShep talk, I hear a character speaking. But when MaleShep talks, I hear a man reading a script.
Is MaleShep's VA even trying? The man seems to put no emotion in his voice what so ever. To be fair he does sometimes shows emotion, but very rarely and only a ittle bit. Does BioWare have somebody in the recording booth with him and has to poke him so he remembers thats he is voicing a character and not just reading a script?
MaleShep' VA is ot the only reason why I never play as him, but it's a major one.

So does anybody else never, or rarely, play as MaleShep? And if so, what is your reason?

I played as MaleShep--specifically John Shepard (Infiltrator) just to try it out during my Insanity run of ME2. I had to romance Tali just once, so I figured I'd do it then. Anyway, yeah, the voice-actor really soured the experience for me. I'm sticking to FemShep from now on.

I hate the VO for him. I played him once in the first one and once in the second and havent played him sense. I love the FemShep VO.

I've gotten a male Shepard to Plot Planet #2, but no further. I do, however, have a female Shepard of every class at level 60.

Why? Lots of reasons. I'll certainly give Meer his credit as a competent voice actor, but it feels like he's cold-reading the script; Hale's performance just feels in the moment. This was more a happy surprise the first time than anything, as I made a FemShep the first time because I thought the story would be more interesting with a zero-fanservice female lead - and personally, I feel I was right. Shepard's a hell of a Marine.

I only play as a male shepard, and I agree that the VA is not very good most of the time, but I want to feel like the character is an extension of me, and I can't do that when I play as a female. It just does not interest me. And I don't like having to look at what looks like a models body all the time that looks like it would shatter if she fired anything bigger than a pistol.

I tried playing as a female, mainly to see if the female VA was better, but I couldn't play more than a short time. It doesn't feel right to me.

Eh, despite my current avatar I play ManShep more. I think both VA are fine.

i like male sheps VA, he sounds gruff and manly, perfect for my battle worn bad ass heroic shep :)

i cant handle female shep, there's no way to make her not look ridiculous when you make the char, as well as that all the love interests suck; you feel guilty with thane, garrus sucks ass and jacob is such a duechbag : /

besides, if you play as male shep then you get tali, which is the whole point of playing :D

I prefer Meer over Hale any day and twice on Sundays, but I still play a few femSheps too.

I'm quite the opposite actually. Only ever play ManShep.

I have zero problems with the VA. Trying to play FemShep on the other hand, I can't help but feel like her VA seems bored. I expect to hear a sigh at the end of every sentence really.

Just my opinion though

Both are great. Hale excels on certain types of lines, Meer on others.

All of this "maleshep/femshep VA ruined the game for me" is just sensationalist, melodramatic nonsense.

I have a feeling the Shep voice actors were instructed not to put too much personality into the voices, because if they were too friendly sounding the renegade sheps wouldn't work, and if they were to tough sounding the paragon sheps wouldn't work.
So because they wanted to have voices that would fit all personalities, we ended up with voices a bit lacking in personality

My point is, don't blame the voice actors, I think the acting for the Shepards is a lot tougher than acting for the other characters ingame because those characters have well written out personalities. Shepard doesn't, for obvious reasons.

Lies!

That being said, it's much harder than it should be to make a decent looking toon - male or female.  You get a couple locked viewing angles and flat lighting.  Then in both games you have to sit through an unskippable cinematic, then in ME2 you have to play a short level and sit through another cinematic before you can even get a peek at what your results look like.

My current avatar is the result of:
- About ten different versions of a ME1 toon.  Thats right, I got to hear Udina say, "Well, what about Shepard" ten times before I settled.
- A manual recreation of the ME1 toon in ME2 without a saved code since imported toons don't have codes.  Had to eyeball it.
- Three different versions with minor changes inspired by another poster's FemShep.

And I can finally say I've settled on one I liked.  So yeah, character creation could be a lot better and more intuitive since it took me several years to come up with a FemShep whose appearance didn't annoy me.

Got lucky with my ManShep though, settled on more or less the same design after a handful of versions in ME1 and had the same ever since.

I can't deal with Meer's voice acting for more than a little while and consequently have never finished the game with a male Shepard. I don't have a lot of time to play video games and, when I do, I won't spend it barely tolerating Meer's delivery of the lines. Jen Hale can get overdramatic at times but, in general, I find her character to be much more alive.

However, I realize some people can't do Hale's acting, so it's a good thing we have both!

I cant play anything other than maleshep myself. Hale is a really good voice actress, but the only thing that matches how good she can be is how crap some of her performances can be. Ive found her to be this way since Baldurs Gate. Give her the right role and she can do great, like Fall-From-Grace, but I always find shes apocalyptically bad when it comes to voices like Femshep.

I tried femshep once in 2007 after release, and now I literally cringe every time Im subjected to her VA. It sounds so fake. Meer isnt perfect, but damn if I cant at least enjoy his VA. Hales performance makes the game unplayable for me.

My main paragon character that I completed ME1 & ME2 with was male. However, all my renegade, achievement chasing characters have been female. When I completed my 1st playthrough on ME1 I saw a clip on youtube. I tried out the femshep and agree that the voice acting is superb!!

I think the voice acting is the same to be honest. People seem to like Jennifer Hale better, but I thought the accent is kinda off and she sounded better in KOTOR.

Wow, I had no idea anyone actually thought FemShep's acting was actually *bad*. Personally, I can't stand her Renegade delivery sometimes, but for a Paragon she's aces.

MaleShep is so... flat. He just never leaves that *one* emotional state, that "look at me I'm a military man" voice except for occasional lines that actually sound pretty good--usually Renegade lines. He also has this absurdly cheerful way of saying certain Renegade lines that just works better for them than FemShep's delivery tends to. ("I'll relinquish one bullet. Where do you want it?" - an example of a line I prefer to hear from MaleShep.)

Yeah, FemShep Renegade just seems angry.  ManShep Renegade seems amusingly above things like "decency."

I always play as FemShep - being female it's the obvious choice for me. Also, being on the erm, butch side, I love Jen's VA - goes perfect with my character. I love the sardonic tone to her voice in ME2, again, it adds more to the way I Role Play her - basically me with a big gun ^^

I have tried playing MaleShep, but cannot stand the voice - not so much the acting but the way it's mixed into the soundtrack - it always sounds too loud compared to the rest of the soundtrack - almost like it's 'sitting on top' of the track instead of being a part of it. If that makes any sense? that's the way I hear it anyway.

being lazy I will just copy and paste what I said in another similar thread :P

I stick to my own gender so I guess I'm bias when i say i prefer Maleshep.(And stick to playing as him) I tried listening to femshep but it just sounded like Hale (A amazing voice actor btw) was trying to hard to sound like military badass and I didn't really like that

My primary Shepard is a female, but that's just mostly because that character got fleshed-out and designed the best. Though I do prefer Hale's voice work in the game to Meer's, not that I think his is awful.

I've intended to go back to ME1 and start up a male Shepard, to bring right alongside my female Shepard, but it's never worked out in terms of ideas and me actually sitting down to play it out.

For what it's worth, my first Shepard was male.
