As I was going through the release info for Mass Effect 2 something caught my eye. SO far there has been no release for the Japan territory. I was curious because Mass Effect 1 was released in Japan, so why not the follow up? The ME series is a great series and our friends in Japan, or gamers any territory, should not miss out. Is your company waiting for the PS3 version to be finished before releasing both versions in that region, or is EA looking for a Japanese company to partner up with (like SquareEnix) to help with localizing and distribution, or is it something as simple as nothing has been decided up to this point?

Did not sell well in japan. No point if it's cheaper for Bioware to allow any of the small amount of ME japan fans to import it.

There are no 10-ft long swords, androgynous protagonists, or girls in schoolgirl uniforms.

Yeah yeah I know.  I'm being a jerk.

ME didn't sell well. I'm not saying that the Japanese have bad tastes in games, but Dynasty Warriors is a big deal in Japan while Mass Effect went unnoticed.

Because they have yet to release Mother 3 in the US. Stick it to em' bioware. Someone did make an English patch, but we have yet to see a real release.

the japan market doesnt sell well with realism. Face it alot of the most popular games are not realistic and tend to be a lot less shooter orientated

Lol, I'd go out of my way to call that bad taste.
But in seriousness, it seems Japan's video game market stops catering to audiences past the age of 20.  *Sad face* It's a shame because there's a lot of talent in artistry over there, alot of great story creators  but they're stuck in their old ways with their old consumer base.

It came out in Asia, and the Asian Version is Region Free, so I assume that any Japanese people wanted to play it, they'd just get the Asian Version.

not sure if your insinuating that ME2 is realistic.

Still, reason why fantasy games as far from reality as possible are the bread and butter in japan ais not because they are stuck in the old ways, they are a different culture. Even if they are "democratic" is part, their entire society is based on shut up, suck it up and do your work regardless of where you are assigned.

Daily lifes for japanese above 12 years old is frustrating. Lot of work, less time each day for themselves, so whenever they get a chance to escape their incredibly busy lifes, they dont do so onto a game that has political implications, or that reminds them how bad their government is, how little time they have for themselves, how much dead end jobs actually exist, how corruption is eating away at their land.

When they play they want to escape their reality onto another one... we do so as well, but nowhere near as close as ASian gamers.

Hardly anybody bought it in Japan. Not enough tentacle porn.

I'm pretty sure that in labeling ME as realistic as an explanation for why it doesn't sell in Japan, they're referring to the art style, not the technology contained within the game's universe.

Like... no 10-ft swords, androgynous protagonists, or girls in school girl uniforms.

If memory serves me correctly it took a while for ME1 to get a Japanese port ( I just checked Gamefaqs and the US release date for the 360 version is listed as 11/20/07 and the Japanese release date was 05/21/09 ) so just because a Japanese version of ME2 has not come out yet doesn't mean there won't be one in the future.

Of course as many of you pointed out, the first ME1 didn't sell all that well in Japan. Maybe Bioware won't bother making a Japanese port of ME2 after all

Okay, ... those ansers are extremely funny. But should there be only one really meaning such stuff, he is a jerk, ... bigtime.

And please spmeone explain why it would take so much time to port a game for Japan, ... it's not like their computers use a different language (you know what I mean!).

Since it's coming to ps3, im pretty sure the japanese get a chance to experience ME2. If not, it's their loss.

I'm sure there are people in Japan that are intrested in ME. Dark space opera usually sells there too, even if it doesn't have big eyed teenage girls and giant mecha suits.

Seconded. The Wii is a great example: its a joke and pretty much every game that comes out of Japan is designed to do one thing only: make money. They generate huge amounts of anticipation for absolute crap (like Wii Sports) and then pretty much take advantage of the extremely young or old (like 30+) gamers by selling them said crap.

JRPGs... I won't even go into that. Mass Effect 1 beats any Japanese RPG out to date.

I'm not a racist or anything, its just the truth. Honestly. I feel bad for those in Japan who actually appreciate ME2. Maybe it will be available online somehow.

EDIT: exception is the original Mario game. But thats not an rpg so whatever

Do not worry. Bioware are already working on the japan version. It will feature all game models in anime form and a ping pong table in the normandy. Up to the brim with wacky multicoloured hair cuts, over sized weapons and whimpy adolescent protagonists.

because japan has a massive amount of their own sci fi space stuff? nintendo/playstation = japan's main consoles probably. metroid is like japan's natural halo... besides bioware is probably based in californian studios or canadian ones... japan = giant asian hollywood of it's own.

You are talking crap right there. I won't go into the details and I certainly don't want this thread to get derailed into some fanboy flame war on what Console/Game is the better/worst, but you display a highly irrational sight on the Wii. As if XBox/PS2;3 and the PC don't have loads of said games either. You are enticing doublestandards right there.

Ontopic:
My original question still stands. What would cause a port for Japan to take so long?

Looking at it, it takes a while to get games ported to other regions. I mean, I knew the earliest Final Fantasy games didn't get ported to North America until two years later. In another case, Persona 3 (which is a brilliant game) did not get ported until another year. If porting games is just changing languages and code, you are wrong. There's a lot of work, such as getting a publisher, publisher rights, political issues, legal issues, marketing, etc, etc.

Even the Russian version of Mass Effect 1 didn't come out until this year. So I don't think the lack of a target market is the reason why Mass Effect 2 didn't come out in Japan.

The japanesse didn't like the idea you couldn't have sex with Hanar, so they didn't bother wanting the second game in their country
