I've been playing DA for a while and I've done 3 quests (elves, lothering, haven). trouble is I just bash my way through on 'easy difficulty"

open the door and point and click till everyones dead

oh yes and swallow lots of potions

I think I may be missing something but my characters haven't levelled very quickly so I don't have many skills

I threw a fireball once but it didn't do much

any tips

What's the question? Your characters havent leveled very quickly? Elf quest as in forest or origin? You character should be around level 9~10.. somewhere there. You get to about level 20 in the end in normal play through.

If you are expecting your fireball to kill mobs out right, well that is not really going to happen a lot.

thanks. its good to know that my level 11 characters not a complete retard.

yes, i was expecting the fireball to do a bit more than it did. it was pretty much shrugged off. should i be using lots of bombs, poisons and traps cos they don't seem to be very effective ?

Umm, I personally dont use bombs and traps - I am the lazy type of player.

Fireball damage is proportional to your spellpower and work against the enemies' resistant and it can knock enemies down so it has it uses. Most spells when cast alone do not do much but when combined becomes very powerful.

**SPOILER**

Spells like Blizzard + Spell Might + Tempest will result in a Spell Combo (Storm of the Century) and that will do a lot of damage over a huge area. If you like to burn things, then Grease + Fireball combo.

You either didn't notice, used it on fire resistant enemies, or your spellpower is REALLY low :)

For a really devastating combo, use Fireball and Virulent Walking Bomb.

Most spells when cast alone do not do much but when combined becomes very powerful.

It's true that it's all about combining spells correctly, but many mage spells do insane damage on their own anyway.

Fireball does do good damage by the way, not to a single target but to large groups. It also has an AoE knockdown and a 10 second cooldown. What's not to like?

I played as elf mage. In normal play I was in end battle level 20.

Fireball is nice fast damage spell with knockdown also can used to delay enemy movements, because knockdown. Cone of Cold is excelent control spell, best in game if you ask from me. Earthquake doesn't do damage at all, but it's usefull spell too, when you need to slow enemies down or buy time. Blizzard is good spell to slow enemies too, but slower to use than earthquake, casting time two times longer.

Why slowing enemies in some area is important? Because what's the point have area affect damage spells, if enemies just run through it fast. To make them stay inside the damage area is needed. Also I used earthquake as preven enemies to harm blue ally's. I can cast it top of ally's and all get affected, but not damaged. It slows everyones ability do damage in area and buy time for player.

In early age spells, Cone of Cold + Stonefist is fun. Also Force Field is good spell to have, when you need to hold enemy or protect your companion or you self. Mind blast is good when you are surrounded of alot of enemies and need distance. Stun them all and move to other place while they are stunned or better position to use Cone of Cold.

From combos I mostly used Shatter as single targets. For many enemies, I used "Storm of the Century" when I had it in near end. Other combost I did few times was, Grease fire and Shockwave.

Ah another useful combo is:

When you see the stupid NPC cast Glyph of Paralysis near themselves, immediately cast Glyph of Repulsion on that Glyph and it will explode in the enemy's face and AOE paralyze that moron and his pals :P
