How do you rank them in terms of preference and why?

Oka, first off, I'm not presenting this as an argument, but simply a statement of personal preference.  Why do certain classes gel with your playing style more than others.  For me, the breakdown goes something like this:

1. Soldier: (Specifically a Widow-specialized soldier)
Why?  I'm just too much of a DPS-stickler to go any other way.  I love dealing death from a distance with tungsten ammo and the massive damage bonus from heightened AR tips the scales against the Infiltrator for me.  I haven't checked out the Mattock yet, but I hear it's killer.

2. Vanguard
Why?  In short, the sheer fun factor, and the pants-pooping exhilliration of engaging tough enemies up close.  It really did make my fourth playthrough come alive due to the added variety of a totally different combat playstyle.

3. Addept
Why?  In a near dead heat with the Infiltrator, the Addept pushes through due to the potential for tactical chicanery by combining powers with those of squadmates.  I also liked the challenge created by an offense-oriented class that's neither tough nor particularly damaging.

4.  Infiltrator
Why?  In fairness, I never developed a facility for using the tactical cloak as it7s intended to be used.  It's great for evasion and maneuvering, but I'm not too fond of either.  can see how some would love it though.  Turning invisible is pretty badass.

5.  Sentinel
Why?  The two remaining tech classes constitute another dead heat, which the Sentinel only wins for reasons explained below.  This class has versatility in spades and the signature power certainly looks cool.  the problem for me is it7s an almost entirely defensive power, and I'd much rather be damaging than relisilient.  Sentinel was the second class I played and, as soon as it became an option, I turned her into a low rent sniper with a weapon specialization.  So much for roleplaying the class.

6.  Engineer.
Why?  I know it's been said many times and many ways but the engineer got robbed when the signature powers were being handed out.  part of the appeal of building a new character in an as yet unplayed class is the wow factor of trying out cool new powers  (especially if that power happens to be the Vanguard's charge).  problem is, by the time I got to the Engineer, I had been using squadmates' drones for nearly 200 hours.  Nope, nothing new there, handy though they may be.

1. Sentinel

Has always been my dependable stand-by in ME1 and ME2. Simply because of its resilience and versatility.

2. Engineer(With Shotgun)

There's actually quite a bit of different ways to play this class, some not so apparent. Combat Drone is rather versatile and this is one of the classes that forces me to time everything perfectly.

3. Vanguard/Adept(With Claymore/Shotgun)

Tied between the two, as they both make great Close Quarters classes, one being more instant and decisive, and the other with more staying power.

4. Infiltrator

Sniping is great, but the Tactical Cloak didn't appeal to me too much. Great positioning tool though.

5. Soldier

There isn't really anything wrong with this class, I just find AR Rush to be too specialized and simply, boring.

1. Vanguard. Easy one. Charging with the claymore is just to fun to pass by. Spending a whole fight with your health in the red, shotgunning people's faces without having to rely on any squadmates made many epic moments. I always smile when I play vanguard.

2. Sentinel (assault sentinel with shotgun) I think with this class you have the most freedom on the battlefield. You can stay out of cover for longer than other classes and sustain an intense close quarter combat fight because of tech armor and shotgun. It is also the class I die the less with, even if I try different things in fights and play aggressive.

Next tree are tied in my mind but I'll try to sort it out a bit...

3. Adept. This class makes mass effect shine. It brings life to the whole mass effect fields\\biotic powers sci fi world and makes it enjoyable to play. Flinging people around and making the explode in mid-air is just great. Also, you really have to work with your teammates more if you want to get the most out of this class. It wins over the soldier or infiltrator because of originality.

4. Infiltrator. Even if I am not a great friend with tactical cloak and would love it to stay on when I reload or shoot, infiltrator is unique in many ways and lets you play with guns at close quarters or extra long range. The fact that people go back into cover when you cloak and the auto-aim on moving targets on the xbox kinda kills the fun of using the sniper for me though...Overall, mixed feelings for this class.

5. Soldier. Going out gun blazing as a one man army is fun, just not very unique and flavorful. I love switching between snipers\\assault rifles\\shotguns and lining up headshots whith adrenaline rush, but it also gets old quicker than using other class specific powers and I don't think it really brings the most out of this game.

6. Engineer. For me this class is just harder to play, without many benefits. I've started another playthrough to try and spice it up with energy drain or dominate, but my first one was slow and boring. No firepower, no warp explosions, no defensive powers except the drone. I had to rely on my squadmates most of the time. Dominate is fun with this class though, but it isn't a starting power, and not even a tech one so...

This is my ranking for Insanity.

1) Vanguard: Constant motion and peril is exhilarating.
2) Adept: I enjoy throwing people around.
3) Infiltrator: Stealthy slow-mo headshots appeal to me.
4) Soldier: Adrenaline Rush + Mattock = Beauty.
5) Sentinel: Fast, fast, fast.  If only Sentinels had Pull...
6) Engineer: The drone makes the game too easy.

1. Vanguard. Obvious reasons.

2. Infiltrator. Cloaked Widow headshot on Heavy Mech. Happy fun time yay!

3. Sentinel. So damn versatile.

4. Adept. Sending them fsr, far away.

5. Engineer. Drone is just awesome. So much better then Tali or Legion's

6. Soldier. Snoozefest.

1. Vanguard - Charge + Claymore is just so much fun for me! Vanguard allows for fast paced combat with only little cover.

2. Sentinel - Assault Armor + shotgun = plays a lot like Vanguard except you have to walk more. I like that I can also use powers such as Heavy Throw when I want to! Cover is not usually needed for Assault Sentinel, you can even melee most guys to death if you want.
3. Soldier - I like shooting, and love the Revenant. Since Soldier is the only class that can use it, I put Soldier to no.3
4. Adept - A very close behind Soldier in my book, I love Singularity, Pull and Throw. With proper squad and advanced firepower (Shotguns or Assault Rifles) Adept is a beast and very fun to play.

5. Engineer - I like the Drone, but Engineer is just not as much fun as the other classes for me.
6. Infiltrator - I do not enjoy using Cloak that much, it is a very powerful class and still fun to play, but I enjoy other classes more.

1. Infiltrator -- My favorite class from ME1, transferred over to ME2. Would it have been my favorite class if I was introduced to it in ME2 first? Dunno. What I do know is that I love my Widow, I enjoy a good tactical cloak, and headshots on the YMIR mech is purest of joy. Also, I have to be able to use some tech powers. That was the whole appeal back in ME1, the ability to just toss out tech powers with abandon to compliment combat. Incinerate is one of my favorite powers in the game. Oh, and also the chance to get Squad Cryo Ammo. 's nice.
2. Adept/Vanguard -- I played both classes very differently from each other, but in the end, they both brought me the same level of fun. Charge is suicidal and I had a blast with each and every single death resulting from my own stupidity. Didn't play the Adept so stupidly, but it had that feel of a Mage class in fantasy games: weak at first, then a monster later on. Maybe I'll give Vanguard the edge on this one, though.
3. Soldier -- I like the ME2 Soldier a lot more than I did in ME1. My aim has always been poor (but don't ask me why I take a sniper class like Infiltrator as my favorite), so Adrenaline Rush has been my crutch. With the ability to switch between the different ammo, it's not like throwing out a good Incinerate or Overload, but it still tears through defenses well enough. Just with bullets.
4. Engineer -- I admit I probably played this class in the least effective manner possible. You'd think I'd like it, because I really am a strong tech power user. But I felt I was playing far too much support than I'd like. Again, I suspect there is a much more aggressive way to handle the class, but I didn't find it.

Sentinel is not number 5. I've yet to finish a playthrough with a Sentinel, and the last time I tried it, that was when I was playing Normal difficulty. Wait, now I'm admitting I haven't finished the game with all six classes.... Well, I'm working on it for a playthrough to use with Lair of the Shadow Broker.

I will post when I finish my current sentinal and future engineer. Im trying sentinal with the geth shotgun, might be fun. Right now the most fun playthrough was vangaurd, the EASIEST by far playthrough was infiltrator still fun though.

Everybody hates the engineer. Don't say it doesn't have many benefits, or that it's mostly a support class. If that's what you think, you're doing it wrong.

It can be played very aggressively mainly because the drone increases your survivability so dramatically.

It has been said already in this thread:

The drone makes the game too easy.

1. Infiltrator... because deep down, who doesn't like headshotting while invisible?

2. Adept... because biotics are fun.

3. Engineer... especially with dominate, provides unparallel, absolute control.

4. Sentinel... An epic class with great powers, but sometimes it's so good it can be boring.

5. Soldier... Somewhat vanilla, but cryo ammo and adrenaline rush are a fun combo.

6. Vanguard... Too hectic for me, and I ended up relying on reave far too much.

Edit: I have absolutely no dlc's or else I have a feeling soldier could rank so much higher.

1. Adept - Love casting and using the squad to do stuff. Nothing more enjoyable than pull multiple throws and launching the enemy into space :)

2. Infiltrator - was my ME1 class and the first few play-throughs on ME2, so it was my favorite until i was convinced to try the others when this forum was about builds and not LI's.

3. Sentinel - makes the game a cakewalk. AR, Shotgun, Sniper, all are valid choices and play styles. And Sheppard makes Miranda look like a chump for the sentinel class.

Soldier was easy, but I tire of shooting and staring at a weapons locker on Shep's back. Vanguard would be in the list but I found myself just spamming charge and not really trying or wanting to try other things, and I'm just not good with a shotgun :( Engineer was neat but I never finished it as I was bored long before the collector ship.

1. Adept-Gives ME combat it's flair and biotic combos are too much fun.

2.Infiltrator-Sniping is fun (except they made it easy-mode in ME2) and Cloak rocks with a shotgun.

3.Vanguard-Charge. What more needs to be said?

4.Engineer-Love tech powers but not much more.

5.Sentinel-Powerful, but too close to an Adept for my tastes.

6.Soldier-Yawn.

1. Soldier - I'm not the biggest shooter fan, but the soldier in ME feels very good. I like the tactical options for each situation. Nothing ever gets to hard, but also nothing ever gets to easy.

2. Adept - You need creativity for this class. It has the most ways to kill your enemies and is just fun.

3. Infiltrator - Mainly as a sniper. I love sniping. The annoying thing is the low ammo, which makes every missed shot hurt.

4. Vanguard - Would be higher, if it worked. There are to many situations were charging doesn't work for no good reason at all. And it sucks when charging skips waves of enemies.

5. Engineer/Sentinel - Both are a mix of simple crowd control and defense-damaging powers. The engineer has a little more tactical depth, because of the drone, while the sentinel is more combat proof because of Tech armor. I like both, but they are a bit to similar for big parts of the game.

Just realized I did say engineer was harder to play, but what i meant was more that it was hard to play in a fun, fulfilling way. I just didn't have any rythm with engineer compared to every other class and I am still trying to find a playstyle that I like with this class. Taking shotgun training on my 2nd run will surely help.

1.  Soldier - This class fit the story the best and was my first playthrough.

2.  Vanguard - Easily the most fun, but also the most frustrating to play.

3.  Adept - Ragdolling is fun!

4.  Sentinel - Sort of played like the adept.

5.  Engineer - A bit of a one-trick class.

6.  Infiltrator - I prefer close up action over sniping.

1. Shotgun Infiltrator- Sniper Rifle + Shotgun + Cloak makes for a deadly but unforgiving combination, requiring a lot of thought on positioning, timing and power usage. This is the real high-risk high-reward class.

2. Assault Sentinel- unstoppable tank mage of doom.

3. Widow Soldier- no damaging active powers and all low ammo weaponry, constantly switching weapons to use the right tool for every task, needing to think about positioning and advancing or be at risk of running out of bullets. Kind've reminds me of my RE4 days.

4. Engineer- with Drone, Hack/Dominate and Cryo/Incinerate, what the Engineer lacks in damage is made up for with an unparalleled ability to not get shot at.

5. Widow Infiltrator- Sniping and getting oneshots is fun, but leaves the class feeling a little one dimensional. While CQC is also possible with the SMG, it just seems to work a lot better with a shotgun. Having 2/3 guns with low ammo is also frustrating on a non-caster class.

6. Adept- Focusing on using Warp Ammo and Lift/Sing damage bonus rather than explosions (because that got boring real quick), with occasional Throwing into orbit for the lulz.

7. Vanguard- starts out badly until you can sufficiently reduce Charge cooldown, then it's just Charge over and over. Hilarious for a while but loses my interest eventually. Too safe, too one dimensional.

8. Caster Sentinel- very safe, effective, but boring.

9. Revenant Soldier- only uses two weapons and one ability, only tactic is pull trigger until everything dies, boring.

Not tried: aggressive Engineer, aggressive Adept, caster Vanguard, caster Infiltrator

1. It's a tie between the Vanguard and the Assault Sentinel with a shotty. Both are powerful and almost unkillable if you know what you're doing. The sentinel is far more forgiving of mistakes though.

2. Adept. I love this class. It's challenging and you have plenty of powers available to shake things up.

3. Soldier. It has only one ability worth using consistently, but it's one of the best .

4. Engineer. Crowd control can be fun. If all you're doing is casting drone, you're not playing it right.

5.Infiltrator. Haven't played the shotgun version of it (I'd probably enjoy it a lot), but the sniping version bores me to tears.

1. Sentinel: Energy Drain is a must. With that and Warp, bringing the defenses down on an enemy is cake, conserving precious ammo.

2. Infiltrator: I enjoy reaching (way, way, WAY) out and touching someone. In the head. At a really high speed.

3. Engineer: Yeah, the drone makes it easy, but it doesn't make it any less fun. Pop 'em out of cover and you have the world's most satisfying game of slow Whack-A-Mole.

4. Adept: Singularity works wonders on Husks, and I will say that you don't waste a whole lot of ammo, but for some strange reason I just can't get behind it. It just isn't a whole lot of fun to me.

5. Vanguard: Charge is fun, but it's only wise to use it on the last enemy on the field, lest you get your ass shot off. And with a lack of defense dropping techniques (no Warp) means that you have to waste a ton of ammo to get to the point where you can use any of your powers. Even then, none of them are showstoppers. You have to shoot them again.

6. Soldier: Just fails to move me. For a game as accused of run-and-gun gameplay as ME2 is, the one with the most guns is the stop-and-go class, having to switch out different guns for different situations. Plus all the specialty guns are acquirable for any class anyway, so you might as well play as a different class from the get-go.

2. infiltrator. invisibility is very useful. widow is nice.

3. engineer. i like drones.

4. adept. pull/throw can have some really interesting results.

5. sentinel. tech armor is nice, but really, its not very fun.

6. soldier. there is nothing the soldier can do that another class can't do better after the collector ship mission.

^^that took hims several tries to get right. One Charge bug and you are dead :D
Though I do agree to a certain extent, once you get used to Charging, you will rarely ever die. I like that when you Charge and screw up (miss shots, Charge at a bad moment etc.) you can still die very easily and very quickly.
But same goes for every class, once you get the playstyle down, chances are you will not see "critical mission failure" screen very often.

Vanguards can also go one on one with the colossus with a little luck under the right circumstances. By no means does it make the class generally too safe. Hell, the most common complaint with regards to class is dying to often. You are literally the first person I've ever seen in these forums say the class as a whole is too safe. If you have a charge target every CD and don't charge into the wrong situation then yeah, you can keep your shields refreshed, but that's a reasonably sized if. It's not ubre hard, but it's definitely no where near engineer levels of safe.

[edit here] You know what man, forget it. I don't know why I'm turning an opinion thread into a debate thread. Sorry.
