I know bad luck or screw ups can easily lead to death but... come on, how many other classes can take on one YMIR at close range without cover, let alone two?

Certainly the Vanguard can die a lot. Hell I gave up on the class on my first attempt with it because it was just too painful in the beginning (didn't help that I was new to the game too). But once you get Charge's cooldown low enough and you learn your own limits on what you can handle, you only die if the game bugs out at a bad time or you do something monumentally stupid (which for me would include Charging two YMIRs... for others, apparently that's fine too).

But anyway, it's not just the survivability that turns me off the Vanguard (note Sentinel and Engineer rank high on my list), it's that in combination with using the same weapon and the same ability over and over and over. It's the same thing that turns me off the Revenant Soldier. I can't do the same thing repeatedly too often.

Don't worry about it man, I should have never said anything. I'm defensive when it comes to vanguards and sometimes it comes out in threads where it really has no place. All the OP was asking for was opinions of the class and I went and turned it into a debate thread. It's all gravy.

Yeah, it is up to us what we use, I do not mind using Charge over and over again. You do not have to though, it is possible to play with rank 2 Charge and be a caster Vanguard - not my cup of tea, but the possibiliy is there.

I got bored of Cloak + Widow shot combo pretty soon, although it is pretty much the same as Charge+shotgun blast, only from range. Maybe if I played around with shotgun Infiltrator longer I'd like it more.

It is very interesting to see some consider Soldiers weakest class and others think (different thread though) they are most OP class in the game

I'm actually trying to come up with a caster Vanguard build. If anyone has ever done that or just have suggestions, feel free to PM me.

I finished all classes at least more than two times for each class. total finished game is 27 times. anyway, I am not tough enough to get closed combat. so vanguard is just another biotic class for me. my favorite class is soldier, adept. they are totally opposite. but they give me unique power. infiltrator? meh. cloaking is bull****. sniper head shot is still weaker than soldier class. sentinel, engineer is very hybrid to combine positive powers. but it's still missing something.

I found something to be easy in the game. Adept is easy class for insanity level because you can still fight against enemies without ammo. it's plenty. last night I just started the game again with insanity level, and adept class because new Liara shadow broker DLC will bring some additional power to adept class (whether it is a rumor or not). I love biotic power.

I guess that depends on how much experience you have. It doesn't take much experience to do well as a soldier on insanity. Adrenaline rush, point & shoot with whatever weapon you fancy and you'll probably be ok. In that sense it is OP compared to most other classes. There is more of a learning curve with other classes, but once you master them, they clear rooms as fast or faster. Most importantly you got the variety of dispatching them in different ways to keep the game interesting.

Well class balance also depends a lot on your instincts and general approach to shooters. One of the class I had the most trouble with was infiltrator. I just couldn't get the hang of cloak and I seemed I always used it at the wrong time for the wrong purpose. Other people think it is by far the easiest class to finish insanity with. My first insanity run was with an adept and I didn't die to often or found the class underpowered. The one that fits my playstyle the most is an assault sentinel. To me it is owerpowered (in a good way). Other posters just hate the cooldown on tech armor and find it very hard to play with. It just shows the great balance in this game: you can play any class on insanity with ease and you can find any class very hard to play with.

Assault Sentinel: All hail the tank

CQC Infiltrator: because its just too much fun.

Engineer: Because I love all the options

Soldier: its very cruisy

Adept: challenging but rewarding

Caster Sentinel: half soldier, half engineer, half as fun as either

Widow Infiltrator: was a bit boring and didn't make use of cloak as well.

Too safe.

Vanguards can also go one on one with the colossus with a little luck under the right circumstances. By no means does it make the class generally too safe. Hell, the most common complaint with regards to class is dying to often. You are literally the first person I've ever seen in these forums say the class as a whole is too safe. If you have a charge target every CD and don't charge into the wrong situation then yeah, you can keep your shields refreshed, but that's a reasonably sized if. It's not ubre hard, but it's definitely no where near engineer levels of safe.

[edit here] You know what man, forget it. I don't know why I'm turning an opinion thread into a debate thread. Sorry.

i agree, you are the first I hear to say that as well

1. Engineer. I just like hunkering down somewhere and spamming Incinerate/Overload at dudes. Add sniper rifle training and to me this is the quintessential long distance class.

2. Soldier. Widow headshots with Adrenaline Rush. Never gets old.

3. Vanguard. Sometimes it's fun to get up in people's faces too. I'd only play this on lower difficulties though.

4. Infiltrator. Seems like a perfect combination of tech powers and sniper rifle, but I never really got the hang of using Tactical Cloak, I prefer to have the drone instead.

5. Adept. Fun to hurl Warp at fools but overall I tend to prefer guns and tech powers to biotics.

6. Sentinel. class felt nondescript, like a jack of all trades master of none. Plus Tech Armor is too defensive, I feel like I'm pretty good at avoiding fire so defensive powers don't help me very much. I'd rather have another way to hurt people.

1. Infiltrator

The widow rifle was just... ahhhhh. Plus tactical cloak saved my life many, many times during my insanity playthrough. They may be cowards... but you're still dead.

2. Vanguard

CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE. That's a petty reason to favor this class, but it's a reason. Charge is just too much fun... when it doesn't get you stuck on top of random things.

3. Adept

I really like biotics- but some of the powers I just don't end up using much.

4. Sentinel

It's low on the list because I've played as one so many times I'm sick of it. The tech armor is cool but mostly unnecessary if you know what you're doing. Throw and warp do come in handy.

5. Engineer

Can't really remember... haven't played as one in a while and I only played once. I just don't use tech drones or AI hacking much.

6. Soldier

Just too... bland. I'm not sure. I have no tangible reason to dislike this class as much as I do.

1. Vanguard - My fav from ME1 and carried over to ME2. Aggressive, in-your-face, fun.

2. Sentinel - The tank of all tanks.

3. Engineer - It's really very versatile.

4. Adept - A good change of pace, even though it's not as overpowered as it was in ME1.

5. Infiltrator - I'm a terrible shot when it come to sniper rifles.

6. Soldier - Too boring for my taste.

Also, I may be the only one that I have seen on these forums, but I don't play on Insanity. I did in ME1, but every time I have tried in ME2, I get discouraged by all the death. It's not fun to play when all you do is die. (yes, I know, learn2play and all that...)

Does getting them most of the way through the game count? I've gotten all the classes through to about 3/4 of the game, but I haven't beaten it with all them due to a) about a million restarts to try different builds B) multiple complete playthroughs with the vanguard.

Infiltrator - I'm a sniper at heart, and the cloak was just too delicious a power.

Engineer - I can practically win the game on AI hacking, drones, and incinerate alone. AI hacking is a favorite skill of mine.

Soldier - Specifically, I like the revenant. Soldiers get lots of ways to kill people, and I respect that, but the goddamn cannon available only to soldiers has to be the best thing about them.

Vanguard - I like shotguns, I really do. Charge is a lot of fun, too. It's just that fight with Saren has made me despise my vanguard a little bit.

Adept - Gets started too slowly, doesn't really pick up.

Sentinel - I just don't like sentinels, ok? Also, it could be to spite Miranda. I hate her that much.

In order of playthroughs:

1. Infiltrator. Had been an infiltrator in ME1. Did widow and AR trainings, NG+ on insanity, so 4 times.

2. Soldier. Revy and Widow variants, NG+ insanity, 4 times total. So easy after playing the infiltrator.

3. Adept. NG+ shotgun training. Did the opposite of soldier, pure singularity/pull/warp spammer.

4. Sentinel. NG+ insanity AR training. Loved tech armor/warp/warp ammo/Mattock so much I ditched overload.

5. Vanguard. NG+ insanity Mattock build. Crazy fun, and coolest looking Shepard. Charged with all sorts of weapons, charged praetorians, charged everything.

6. Engineer. NG+ AR training. Currently at insanity, Legion's loyalty, right before Collector base.

Ok i know this is very late but I couldn't resist.  I've done it with an engineer using a similar method of having one mech block the other.  Just keep spamming drone and stay in between them.  Stasis adept may be able to do it too but yeah this is too off topic to keep goiing.

Ok may as well answer the thread.

In order of favorite to least favorite.

Engineer - cryo + drone = insane amounts of fun for me

Adpet - love combos and caster classes in general

Vanguard - insane adrenaline pumping fun

Infiltator - I love sniper rifles but a bit too safe and repetitive (vanguard saved by danger)

Sentinel - Never really got into tank role that it uses. Never made sense to me. (adept + engineer = tank???)

Solider - Boring not enough to do IMO

My top 3 are pretty close to tied. My 4th and 5th (Sentinel & Infiltrator) are a bit below all of them. I don't like playing the 6th at all (Soldier).

1. ADEPT

Basically in a dead heat with Vanguard. Eventually feels too easy to just Overload a group's shields (from squad mates or yourself with Energy Drain), Singularity them, and Warp them and anyone standing near them into oblivion. There's so much variety in which you can mop up the field with them, though.

2. VANGUARD

Only beaten by Adept because it gets slightly more repetitive the longer you play it, and it's harder to think of ways to play it that don't always involve wading into the thick of battle. But yeah, I love me some magical headbutting.

3. ENGINEER

I seriously considered putting this first. Yes, it is a bummer that others have your "special" power, but having 3 combat drones on the field at once is a total blast. Engineers have great damage dealing versatility, and can make the best use in the game out of Geth Shield Boost (which gives less of a bonus than an ammo power might, but refreshes shields and stacks with Squad Ammo powers). I love playing this class.

4. SENTINEL

Basically in a dead heat with Engineer, but slightly behind. Like Adepts, I love the potential for variety, but I feel like you need to use the power wheel more (on Xbox) to get use of your powers, whereas you can rely on hotkeys more with other classes. I also kind of feel like Sentintel got the short end of the stick of both biotic and tech powers. They have Warp, but no good way by default to do Warp Explosions. They have Throw, but no good way to pull enemies off the ground for maximum use. I love freezing enemies and throwing their frozen bodies into walls, but it doesn't kill them as often on Insanity as I wish it would. Ah well.

5. INFILTRATOR

This was my favorite class in ME1, and still my "default" Shepard. It's just too easy in ME2, though, I really miss having Overload as a starting power, and I wish I could justify putting more points into AI Hacking. I know Disruptor Ammo covers for Overload, and Energy Drain can now be used to replicate it, but eh.

6. SOLDIER

Have started 2 soldiers, gotten most of the way with them, gotten bored, quit. I'll finish it with a Soldier eventually, but their powers just bore the heck out of me. I think the only one I'll finish with will be the one I'm giving Slam to as a bonus power because I need SOMETHING other than weapons and "combat powers" in a fight here. Adrenaline Rush and Concussive Shot do help as a power in making Soldier feel cooler than in ME1, though.

1) Infiltrator (CQC) / Vanguard
Those two are my favorites. I can't really pick one over the other. I like them both a lot. I didn't bother with the infiltrator for a while after playing one a while ago with the widow and it was boring as hell. The widow is great but I don't know... I prefer it on my soldier and the infiltrator really is a CQC class in ME2 my opinion. It's just so much fun sneaking up on enemies and blasting their head off with a shotgun or the SMG. The Vanguard also kicks ass. I guess I don't play it as agressively as many other people and maybe will once I play the PC version.

2) Sentinel (Assault with Shotgun Training)
Played a sentinel with power armor and sniper training before and basically ended up sitting behind cover and spamming warp which was a bit boring. The assault sentinel on the other hand is really fun and so it's my choice after the cqc-infiltrator and the vanguard

3) Soldier
Not that interesting but slowmo somehow never gets old I guess and the Mattock/Widow combo is really nice.

4) Adept
Somehow I never really liked the adept very much. It's not bad but I don't know... maybe it's just because I like the other 4 classes above way more.

5) Engineer
Wow... I really dislike almost everything about this class. To be honest I didn't even complete the playthrough with this class because it was no fun at all at some point I decided to rather play another class again than continuing with this bull****.

I tried playing Infiltrator...but the game just became far too easy. You can kill literally almost anything with 3 shots. Your cloak gives you 75% more damage, your visor gives you 10% more damage on head shots, you get the upgrade that gives you plus 50% on head shot, and you get the best ammo power in the game. Not to mention the fact that everyone moves slower when you are aiming

I got to the point where I would just turn invisible and try and smack people to death
