least - definitely dog ... almost no character interactions. Does dog have a quest (other than fetching)? I always ditched dog in Lothering.

Well, you gotta have a tank, and since my warrior PC is still in his prologue, that means I depend a lot on Alistair (for my rogue) and Shale (for my mage). Can't really do without 'em.
For the least-used, I do not care for Sten at all, and I haven't yet unlocked Loghain, although I'm looking forward to him.
My core parties have been:
PC Elf Mage
Zevran
Leliana
Shale
and
PC Human Rogue
Alistair
Wynne
Morrigan switching out with Dog
and for my third time through I'm planning on:
PC Dwarf Warrior
Morrigan
Zevran
Sten switching out with Oghren or Loghain
