I really like the Deep Roads but I take breaks between each section, go back to Oz and trade and talk to people. But if you did it all at once it would probably get tedious.

The Fade sucks no matter what.

Orzimar was my favorite part of the game after the Sacred Ashes quest line, so I hope there are some large dungeons in DA2 as well. The tower fade however is essentially just a bunch of run around and fetch quests (if you want all the stat boosts) that I wouldn't miss.

The fade sucks because you are backtracking constantly if you go in without a guide of some kind, and the visuals are a terrible strain on my eyes, which just amplifies the suckitude. It was a exercise in torture, not gaming.

What's wrong with it being long? It's a big ass area. And the fade....in fact the whole mage tower part of the game is quite short. I thought exploring big areas was fun but I suppose gamers have changed over the years.

No, it's just that not everyone thinks what you find fun, is fun.

They were monotone with little that carried on the story.

I already said it in other threads, I like the concept of the fade but like any solven riddle it looses its fun once you solved it. And the deep roads had a great feeling for me up to the final mace against the golems and traps as that was just frustrating long and felt so artificially added. The point is you spend hours and hours doing nothing but the same fighting. It perfectly got the style they wanted. Each fight had something epic and than just thousand of more enemies came crushing on you. So yes, that theme was really well done in that game, but after a while its just the same over and over.

You mean that they should have changed up the fights and made the challenges for each more different? Or that they should have made more meaningful fights?

The Fade is quite short, but it is incredibly annoying.

I love Orzammar despite its length, and I think there are enough cool breaks in Deep Roads to keep things lively-- Ruck, Legion, Broodmother,Branka.

The Fade though....just **** the Fade. Seriously.

So you agree with me that it has nothing to do with "gamers changing over the years?"

They claimed that it was ME2 length. I got 40-45 hours out of ME2 (excluding DLC), but only 65 hours out of DA. It possibly depends on the person. I think ME2 length is not bad.

No, actually it was fine the way they did it. I have little to complain about a quest like the deep roads, its just that the whole game had a very fighting oriented theme. You spend the biggest part of the game crawling through dungons and killing monsters. Reducing a few of these hack and slay parties while keeping one huge deep roads-typ area sounds fine to me.

I rather have many mid-sized quest with a big background story uniting them (NWN 2 was pretty good at it), rather than 4 huge dungons to clean.

No I simply agree that not everyone will think that the things I think are fun are fun. Gamer's have changed as well as the games made.

The length of a game, when discussing an RPG, is largely irrelevant.

The proper value with which to be concerned is replayability, as it acts as a coefficient for the above.

I would rather buy a game that is thirty hours long and can easily be played five times than a game that is sixty hours long and can only be played twice.

It can be a good thing. In DAO there was a lot of forced extensions of game length.

ME2 isn't exactly a short game. 25-35 hrs is common. Replayability matters more.

Bad example for promotion of replayability!

I don't think so either.  Also, I got over 100 hours out of DA:O, so hearing that DA2 is "shorter" doesn't bother me.

Like I already said, I loved the Deep Roads, but the real damn problem with them was that the reason for such an awesome dungeon crawl- ghosts, golems, broodmothers, Legion of the Dead, treasures, sidequests, and Ruck (can't forget Ruck)- was so incredibly lame. Go hunt for a crazy woman to settle a squabble between nobles? Seriously?

I played it 6 times. Thought that was pretty good for replay value. Probably have twice as much time clocked in ME2 than in ME1. But I love them both.

You did not need to do the fade. You could choose not to do so. I, for, one liked the Fade level of the first game. And I also liked the Deep Roads - a bit too long - I agree. But the plot in this part of the game was nice. And someone at Bioware were obviously listening when gamers complained about the missed possibilities to rally support for the Emperor in Oblivion.

As for the game's length, did you that you can finisg BG2 in about 2½ hours - if you hurry. Or Mass Effect in, I think the same time?

One thing that took forever was to sell stuff to merchant. I think I must have been spending about 1/3 of the game buying and selling with merchants. And although, I like romances etc. in game, I sometimes wondered if I were playing a game or dating simulator :D

However, I have said earlier that I think the days of the 100+ hour games are (finally) over. I, and others, don't have time to play every evening for 3-4 hours.

A little disconcerting, I've been told numerous times that they've cut the choice down to focus on a single character to add more to the story...and while a shorter game doesn't necessarily mean less of a story it is a little worrying to me at least. It is supposed to be an 'epic' after all isn't it?

Replayability is a great thing but do we really have to trade off game length for more replayability? can't we have both? we did in DA:O...

I enjoyed all areas in DA:O It wasn't about rushing through the game as quick as I could, if I like a story I like to wallow in it and soak it up.

I truly hope that isn't the case. I love Fallout 3, Oblivion, and The Witcher for their length. But not all games need to be that long.

I'm a quality over quantity type of guy. If it's 30 hours of the best RPG'ing I've had in a while, I'll definitely take that.
