I wish this were not so. I like huge games that take forever to beat.

Well so far the screenshot seem to point forward a slasher RPG, as there no real signs yet there gonna be any companions, which i think if true is a curious new approach from Bioware, and might explain in not being as long in case their no inter party conversations.

Misinformed poster is misinformed. You can spend 5 minutes to find more information than this.

Did we forget my list of RPGs that are 30hrs or shorter that have been made over the last 5-7 years? Seriously, it's around here somewhere and I assure you the 30 hours list far exceeds the more than 30 hours lists. Case in point is this: It's shorter, and 30 hours isnt bad (unless you're a complete nerd and raging about it.) by TODAYS standards for an RPG so get....the....hell.....over it.

30 hours is already more than x3 the average length of a full price game nowadays.

You also gotta remember that, when talking about RPGs, a long length often looks good on paper, but in practice, it can SUUUUUUUUUCK.

If its "officially" around 20/30 hours long, you can count for a "normal" player to beet the game in about half that and experts in even less time. THats just ONE day of continuous play mind you.

What a crap of an era we are living in for RPGs.

Dragon Age was said to be 30-40 hours, the "normal" player beat it in 60-70+.

DA2 is 20-30 hours by some reckonings, but some people claim they got 100 hours out of DAO, some people can do it in twenty, or twelve.

True, I know someone did it in a week, playing no more than 2-3 hours per day. He just breezed past Lothering, didn't get Leliana or Sten and played half the game with just Alistair, Morrigan and dog, to give an example of how he played the game.

it's called the era of the DLC. Buying games is like buying a Barbie, first you buy the body with the basic things and then you have to buy the house and all the clothes

They already said it was going to be something between Origins and Awakening, which means something like Awakening + 10 hours, otherwise they would have said "almost like Origins"

You know, I've recently been playing through Deus Ex for the third time in about nine or ten years, and as I play it, I just think about how long this game is, and then I lament the length of games nowadays. Older games just seem a lot longer than these new "next-gen" ones. It's not just RPGs like Deus Ex and, well KOTOR is probably a better example, but FPS like Halo:CE/2, and tactical games like Metal Gear Solid.

For example: if you play Halo 3 on the hardest difficulty, then go back and play one of the earlier installments on the hardest difficulty, you'll realize what a joke Halo 3's campaign is. If you cut through all the verbal diarrhea in MGS4, then go back and play MGS or Snake Eater, then you'll realize that there's not that much gameplay experience in relation to "movie" experience. KOTOR was longer than Dragon Age, and about (if not longer) as long as both of the Mass Effects combined.

So I guess what my rant is getting at is, is that there is a certain point where one must say to themselves, "What am I really getting out of this $60+ product?" For a lot of games out there, it's all flair and little substance, and you'll most likely end up wasting 60 hard earned dollars on an 8 hour single playthrough. I still have faith in Bioware and Dragon Age, but the time span trend of modern games makes me wary as well.

Why do all you people hate the deep roads and the fade? Cuz you have to actually fight things and explore. Playing to that standard why not cut out all player control and just go through all of the dialogue to create your own movie?

The fade and the deep roads are brown.  Brown is an ugly color.

I thought it was pretty obvious the game was going to be shorter the DA:O (you know with the voiced PC and all)

I don't mind shorter, just don't let the game be short. I still want an epic rpg that will keep me occupied for days on a single playthrough.

And no, 'replay value' does not contribute to game length, unless we are talking of perfectly different things (like 6 origin stories, yes, that is different. Playing a mage in denerim vs. fighter in denerim is not different enough.)

My first DA:O playthrough was 39 hours; I'll probably hit 45 to 50 on the one I'm doing now, since I'm wanting to as much of the content as possible this time. Hearing that DA2 will be shorter (relatively speaking) is good news.

39 hours! is that even possible?

My first playthrough was 87 hours (with stone prisoner DLC, which adds about 4-5 hours), and i didnt even do every all the sidequests.

Its true, brown is an ugly colour, i wish devs will see this. (This is why i hated Killzone 2 so much, the entire game is Brown)

It usually takes me about 60-70 hours each origin....but i love conversing with everyone, seeing all the banter between the group, doing all the sidequests, Leliana time:wub:...

But i have to say a lot of my time has been spent trying to get the "One Ring" quest to show up. Multiple playthroughs, and i still haven't seen it yet:devil:.  Pfft, i've only seen Axameter once as it is, and that was right after i logged in here and checked for posts regarding it (I love Monty Python:D). I wouldn't be surprised if i've spent 5-10 hours each playthrough trying to get them....

It's a tough choice, but while i like my games long as well i can see the reasoning behind making it shorter. We also have to take into account DLC, and how much time they will add to future playthroughs. I'm still not so sure i'm liking the switch to action oriented, though....

Even having to pay extra I just hope the DA2 DLC are longer than DAO DLC. Just to compare: the role playing shooter Borderlands has 3 (soon to be 4) DLC and 2 of them are pretty much full on explansions (and the 4th DLC sounds like it will be as well).

If the game is less than 35 hours with sidequests and such I'll be disappointed. Do you remember that this game is more action/fighting oriented, right?

This means that a huge part of the time will be inverted in spilling blood to the floor.

I'm expecting ME2 length...perhaps a tad bit more if we are lucky (the ME franchise really spawned some pretty short games. I certainly hope that's not how the future of RPGs looks like.)

Voiced PC (and all the people moaning for one after DA:O was released) is to blame.

Such a shame.

But I suppose a good game is better than a long one.

Quality over Quantity. Aslong as the story is good and the characters are amazing, I'm ok.

We've known this pretty much since a voiced PC was announced. The costs to make a DAO length game with a voiced PC would simply be too high. They'd either have to increase the game price or go the route of removing content and selling it as DLC, both of which would cause riots. I would expect ME2 length, maybe a little longer. And hopefully, it'll be worth replaying at least once, so that would double the playtime. On the birght side, Bioware seems to no longer take several years on their games, so provided quality doesn't suffer the shorter waiting time for their next project/expansion/sequel and DLC (though they are hit or miss) could make up for a shorter game.

I hope that the game won't be all that much shorter than DAO, I like a good long game. However either way I suppose the key is to have plenty of good DLC/Expansions for it, so that in the end its every bit as long as DAO if not longer. We had one expansion for DAO, and it clearly left something to be desired. If DA2 has more than one expansion, and its longer and cooler than Awakenings, that'll go a mighty long way toward making DA2 as long or longer than DAO, and I think thats what is most important, not simply how long the 'base' game is (so long as its reasonably long, of course).
