Console are the future no one going to play on PC anymore.

I for one prefer to play on a PC with a mouse (big plus) and keyboard rather than a console with a controller with like ~10 buttons. That's not to say I don't like many console games, but consoles don't suit certain types of games like awesome NWN-style RPGs or strategies.

That was Shallina's cryptic original French thinking sarcasm, there, The Fred. I had to look it over a couple times, too. He means that as sarcasm and irony when you read the rest of the post about how the top two game makers have no console games in their stable.

I gathered the two halves of the post were contradictory... it is a shame there's no sarcasm icon or something, though, maybe some sort of special sarcastic font? ;-)

Still, consoles *are* popular because they're well suited to those highly-marketed FPS games that everybody seems to love atm, but replace PCs? I don't think so.

Consoles are popular because they are social. You can have friends over, drink beer, eat pretzels, smoke a j, whatever, and play video games together. Hopefully with the proliferation of powerful laptops and wide screen hi def TV/Monitors the PC industry will find a way to put those stupid overpriced boxes in the dumpster where they belong.

@ The Fred: to say the truth, for the games I play (RPG, strategy, graphic adventures...) it is not that I can catch all these differences between a pad or a mouse+keyboard. I mean, I simply use the mouse click. While in fps you really have a difference (I am not good at all in those games :-P ), in RPG it is just the use of mouse. I usually press 2 keys on my keyboard while playing NWN :-D Shame on me!

However, I think console are suitable for a certain type of player and computer for another type. For me, the types of games that I like are present just for the computer.

@Urk: I don't know how life is where you live, but in my entire life, just ONCE has happened that I played a console game in more than one. I was at a friend of mine's and we played Wii sport for about one hour, waiting for the time to catch a train. Just for wasting time. And the game was... well, not mind involvement at all.

That's because you and I are PC gamers, Vaalyah. That's unlikely to change. We're a totally different market. For most people spending 40 hours on an RPG is... well... nuts. Very few people are that dedicated to their jobs. Many aren't even that dedicated to their kids. For the rank and file consumer a few friends and two or three hours of Halo, Madden, or Wii Bowling and a six pack of bud light is a perfect Sunday afternoon.

Let's not dwell on which attitude is healthier.

But technology being what it is today I can see no reason that PC's can't capture both markets.

40 hours? I dream of RPG that lasts at least 200 hours :-D

I am not denying that there are people who simply don't care about the longevity of a game or that don't want to waste too much brain computation over a big plot, either. There are many who simply like the wonderful easiness of "go and kill whatever passes on the screen". Different type of tastes, just this.

But even those guys (and yes, I know some) play each one in his own house. The maximum that I've seen is the on line multiplayer. No "guys, come all at my house for playing together" party!

This in Italy. Maybe were you live is different...

Want to spend loads, and loads, and loads, of hours on a game? Try anything in the Civ series. Or HoMM.

"Civ" stands for "civilization"? If yes, I have done my many hours with that game. But I prefer RPG. It is just that I love LONG RPG, not just few hours of playing time!

You can even have both in one! Well, kind off.

My favourite Civ genre game is Master of Magic.

It has a wonderfull complexity and a beutifull spellcasting system.

Different races with diferent structures, units and special abilities. Two planes of existance connected through Astral Gates.

Plus heroes that, upon reaching high-levels become Demi-gods and can single-handedly destroy whole armies of fantastic creatures. :)

I wish Microprose made a sequel sometime...

I find it two things astounding here:

A that the people let this idiotic topic crop AGAIN (really surprised it wasnt locked)

B that anyone releasing a mod these days gets barely 3 or 4 replies for their hard work but people come out of the wood work to post on topic like this

My, my, really bitter of late, aren't we?

I figure the reason is that everyone has some kind of an opionion or at least a general idea on topics such as this one, while being able to say anything beyond "Congrats on release" would require actually playing the module in question (or having some other access to it's assets for evaluation).
That in turn requires knowledge of a module's existance, a working internet connection and, even more importantly, interest in the module as well as time available to check it out. Something that's not exactly a given, especially considering how many grand modules have just been released or are scheduled for a near release.

In general though I don't think you're recent attitude will be especially helpful in advertising your work. Might be mistaken.
I do plan to check it out sometime after it's released. With the emphasis on sometime, as there are quite a few new interesting modules I would love to check out.

I think the topic about if consoles are the way of the future or not needs it own thread. If you want to continue discussing that please make a new topic.

I agree on both counts, though would have expressed it more mildly. This is, in a sense, a new forum with lots of new people. To suggest that they should go back to the old archived forum with it's nonfunctional search engine is perhaps expecting too much. And yes, the hard work of community developers is often underappreciated. On the other hand, a well-received module will often gather dozens of pages of comments on NWVault, some questions, some criticizing but most complementary.

As to the original question, I played them both and much prefer NWN2 for it's greatly superior graphics and true multi-character parties. I am strictly single-player, due both to personal preference and a slow internet connection. I am still amazed that NWN has a thriving multiplayer community despite the rather cartoonish graphics, but I also remember the "good old days" when only your imagination could fill in the details. Regarding the OCs, NWN2 is far superior, in fact I'm about to play it a second time, something I never even considered with NWN.

@ Eguintir Eligard What I find astounding is someone who has no interest in this thread or in contributing to it coming on just to say no one else should be allowed (lock it) to be interested or contribute to it.

Not everyone here has been playing these games for years and I think the forum needs to allow for the newer players and their questions and opinions.

I have enjoyed reading the posts and learned a lot.

@Eguintir: I am a bit perplexed.

I am the one who starts this "idiotic topic" (your words) so I suppose in your opinion I am an idiot...

I don't want to repeat what Haplose said, even if it is correct that I don't have tried even a single module since I don't have time (I haven't finished the OC yet!), a decent internet connection and so the knowledge to comment on that. But sincerely I think it is quite rude from you to pretend teaching everyone what they should have interest or not in writing.

If I am curious of others opinions on a topic (and reading the old forum is not a possibility, since there I cannot ask for details on everyone's opinions), and I don't offend anyone, I don't know why I shouldn't ask. And if people are interested in this, just answer. I'm sorry if you are frustrated that people don't recognize your job, but it is not a good reason for coming here and offending users who like the thread.

This is not supposed to be a forum just for modders, where they upload mods and can get an applause for that. It is a forum for videogames. So I can't understand which your problem is.

Moreover, here no one is flaming (except maybe you) so, why this thread should be locked? I am really curious.

@moderators: sorry for this post, but I got quite irritated.

I think it's understandalbe on all accounts in this case when someone gets a bit upset.  As long as we can let that (all the way around) be the end of it, I think we'll be okay.

Let me answer the "...(really surprised it wasnt locked)..." comment, also all the way around: Multiple Reasons.

1st: This an open forum for general discussion on all things NWN related (though this is primarily an NWN2 only general discussion forum) and as such, as long as it's pretty much on topic (or follows a reasonable and civil drift) it's well within the Rules of Conduct and Website Terms of Use to NOT lock it.  So it's not locked for that reason.

2nd: As a form of "the latest iteration" of these sorts of threads (and yes, if I locked this one another one would sometime take it's place) I am seriously considering keeping it around to act as a "catchall" for ALL further NWN v NWN2, Which is Better from here on out.

3rd: It has been actually informative, civil and, for the most part, a pretty helpful bit of information for new players, new readers of these NWN2 forums and for helping to generate greater interest (in my view) of NWN2 on the whole.

I know this type of topic can get under peoples' skins at times and, in the past, this was a sore topic to bring up, due to much ill will from a decent chunk of people who took the situation of NWN2s release quite hard.  This one has not gone that way and I would like to see to it that it stays clear and civil throughout.  So let's all help keep it that way.

Let this be the end of grumps, gripes and grief -- all the way around -- and let's let bygones be bygones, shall we?  Any apologies for flared tempers or hasty responses can be done privately if they are felt necessary -- though any open expressions of remorse would certainly not be out of line.

best regards,
dunniteowl

"Skating away,skating away,

Skating away on the thin ice of the new day."

Jethro Tull, 1974

It really is a new day, on a new forum, where to a large degree we can determine the future of this game we all love. The modding community is really hitting it's stride. New players are coming in, lured in part by the current bargain-basement price of the game, and it's up to those of us who have played the game for years to make them welcome and help them when we can. I don't think we can expect any more corporate support.

I don't see any reason why thread with this kind of topic should be locked, as logn as they stay civil - which this one has. Admittedly, previous thread have gotten nasty, which does kind of set a precident, but as long as this one doesn't, I don't see how it can hurt. I think it's actually a great sign that we've got to page 5 without anything more than minor grumbling and insinuations. ;-)

Don't worry about it, Vaalyah.  I have also noticed that some posters forget that new people join these forums and HAVEN'T had this conversation a thousand times.  The only idiots are the ones with condescending attitudes that undoubtedly turn others off from coming to these forums and keeping these things fresh.  To answer your question, I loved NWN1 and its expansions much more than 2.  They were able to get me much more emotionally invested in the story than any of the NWN2 games.  I didn't care too much about any of the characters than I found myself caring about Aribeth, Nathyrra, Tomi, Linu and Deekin.  For that matter, I also really, really enjoyed the Kingmaker and Pirates of the Sword Coast premium modules also.  I could have cared about NWN2 more if there was more development of my character's relationships with the NPCs.  Also the camera controls are, even at their best, an endless source of annoyance and the occasional LONG walks to get back to where you need to go or to revisit an area can get tedious.  I'm talking to you, fire giant/red dragon mountain!  That spirit eater thing with the Mask of the Betrayer is more of an annoyance than is worth dealing with.  I really like the feel of that module too, I wish there was an option to shut that off.  I liked Storm of Zehir, but there is almost no replayability short of tinkering with different combinations of party members which usually gets old after a few combat encounters.  Ho visto che sei in Italia.  Parlo anche un po, ma l'ho studiato molti anni fa e non ricordo molto. ;)

Kingmaker for NWN is AWWWWESOME! I think I can easily say it was ten times more engaging than the SoU expansion, which is easily four times better than the OC for NWN (imo.)

Damn! I almost can understand what you're saying in Italian! Something about living there and studying as a student? And I never 'studiato Italiano' in my whole life. Wonder of it all...

NWN1 had a bit of running back and forth in it too (Chapter 2 of the OC springs to mind don't know why, and there was a little in SoU and HotU) but at least NWN2 has world map (and now Overland Map) functionality. The fire giant area *was* a hell of a pain, though.

The camera controls *are* really bad, too, and made me very mad until I read this. It doesn't explain it very well, but basically you can change options in the .ini file which you don't seem to be able to change through the game options window, so by messing around a bit, you can stop the camera from flying all over the place when the mouse hits the edge of the screen. Maybe we need a sticky about the camera, if we don't have one already?

Also, you should check out some community-made stuff. In terms of just the standard campaigns, NWN1's probably were a little better (though I haven't played MotB or SoZ) but all the new features in NWN2 have given people a lot more to play with in terms of making their own modules.

@ UncleJoe: it is really curious! In my opinion, the basic reason why I do appreciate NWN2 more than the first, it is because the NPCs relationships are more "real", they have a sort of credibility that in NWN I can't find. Can I ask you on which basis you consider NWN relationships with companions more interesting that those in NWN2?

Really, I am curious, this is not sarcasm.

Davvero hai studiato italiano? Non è una cosa comune, di dove sei? (translation: Have you really studied Italian? It is not a common thing, where are you from?)

With each post that I read, I discover more and more people are able to understand Italian. That's interesting. I do estimate that in about 2 years, the forum will be bilingual :-D

By the way, what is "Kingmaker"?

@ The Fred: I am in Crossroad (and can't finish the OC till my new gpu finally comes), so I don't know anything about giants. But guys, I would like to remember to all (I usually forget it too, so often!) that this is a no-spoiler area ;-P

However, till now, in NWN2 I never felt the urgency of finishing an area... ok, once at the Eyegrouger... or was it Bonecrasher? (or how they're spelled) That was BORING. But except for that, never experienced the "please, let me finish this area quickly or I would use god mode!" thought!

While in NWN it was always present in my mind! (ie: I am playing HotU... the maker island or undermountain... Please, let me skip those huge dungeons, I hate them!!!) (speaking about spoilers... you see, I forgot where I am too! -_-' )

Thanks for the link for the camera mode. I am going to check it immediately!

The only things I have downloaded so far are:

1) custom faces for having a decent looking drow female PC

2) custom weapons and armors

3) modifications to use the files at point 2 (and by the way, due probably to a .NET problem, they don't work -_-' I hope I could fix them as soon as my computer with NWN2 installed is ready again)

so... till now I haven't had the opportunity to try many things, also because my internet connection is terrible!

Kingmaker is a premium module that was for NWN. The current retail version of NWN (DIamond, I believe it is) comes with Witch's Wake, Kingmaker and another one, but I don't think it's Pirates of the Sword Coast. These are paid for (originally) modules made by independant groups who got paid for their efforts when submitting them as ideas for Premium Modules (something like what Mysteries of Westgate is for NWN2, only now they're called Adventure Packs, same thing, really.)

If you got NWN with the Platinum or Diamond edition, you should have Kingmaker. It's definitely well worth playing. Very interesting concept for playing and you get a more reasonable set of henchmen. Not companions, but henchmen. They work better than the Official Campaign and Expansion AI henchies, too.
