Can you say Kratos?

Yah cause in BG you didn't have swords. And you totally didn't unleash fury. And there were no mages.

Ow wait.

You didn't unleash fury. You kind of sucked and were killed by the first wolf you found, and it was only possible to survive if you were lucky. Great fun. You played the role of a whelp instead of the role of a character created by you.

You didn't unleash fury, for most of the first game you survived by your wits and gathered a motley crew of (mostly) loyal compardres. But then through your ingenuity you defeated the bad guy, then in BG2 you continued and became a true badass and eventually at the culmination of ToB you are trruly god like but goddamit if you'd earned it you 'felt' it and it all started with the unforgiving masterpiece that was BG1

Oh, hey, it's this thread again. Let me ask you this, OP, just to INDULGE this thread a little bit: have you ever seen a game that sold itself WELL soley on nostalgia factor? And I don't mean niche' market; I mean sold well and was generally received favorably?

BG1 and BG2 were good games for their time, but since then many games after have often been a bit better, or improved upon them in some way. DA: O is no exception; it is the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, yes. However, living in the shadow of BG1 is not how an IP works; you can't sell it based soley on nostalgic factors. You just can't. Business wise, nor IP wise; if you really wanted an IP to get off the ground, you make it stand with two feet, not feet built upon the foundations of games long since past.

What makes DA2 special will be decided when it comes out. Arbitrary whining, and trolling, PC elitism (lol) and all-around irritating attitudes don't help your case, either. Rather, it works against it; why not allow DA2 to stand on it's own as a franchise? If it grows in it's own way, that means it's no longer needing to stand on the heels of BG and can become a very good franchise that stands soley on it's own two feet.

If you want DA franchise to SOLEY stand on nostalgia, it's not going to happen. BioWare is a business as well as it is a company that loves to make good, choice and story-heavy games. Gameplay was never their strong point; and that's not what makes an old school RPG, either. The combat, unless it's something like Dungeon Siege, comes -second.-

Planescape Torment: Most fights, if not all of them, could be won WITHOUT laying a finger on anyone. It rewarded you for that, and more. Was it a good combat system? Quite. But that's not what made it great; that came secondary, perhaps even last. What made Planescape Torment so great was it's story, iteraction and characters. That's what an RPG is, and an old school RPG is. Combat comes secondary, more often than naught. Aside from combat-intensive RPGs with heavy story and choice, old school RPGs with the same's combat just isn't as great as the sum of the rest of it's parts, more than usually. There are some exceptions, but combat is part of the fun; however it still comes secondary.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2: Both had excellent story, memorable characters, and other things that made them great. The combat, though, wasn't exactly 'fun.' It was arduous at times, or just unwieldy other times. As to any further points:

Guess what? Min/Maxing is something you don't do in a DnD game. You don't. You go to a dnd game to have fun and to roleplay. Not to min/max the hell out of your character. That's just being a **** and trying to ruin everyone else's fun by being the best at 'combat.'

Wow this is a long response to a troll thread. Hrmn..to end this off with a sour note, I give you this prestigous image. Well, more like 'sour' or 'end image' thing. Whatever you want to put here, here it is. It's either this, or the 'Son I Am Disappoint' img, and I've used that one too many times.

That, or he'll realize the errors of his ways, and explode.

I'd say the meteor rainbows of death that wipe out emu's will happen before he realizes the sillyness of this whole pointless thread. That or it'll get locked. Either way, rainbows of emu death seems the most likely response.

The Baldur's Gate series was one of my favorite RPG series of all time on the PC, and DA:O definitely harkened back to it. It was very nice having an old-school-type RPG. Still, I recognize that gaming has evolved over time. I don't necessarily mind the approach that BioWare is taking with DA2 however, because the combat system is basically the same (the animation and the responsiveness are supposed to be better of course) and because I expect the storytelling to be as strong as it was in the first game.

BTW, if you ever again decide to copy & paste another pointless rant  into the forum message editor, dear OP, then the least you can do is to remove all the line returns that end up being automatically inserted into your text. Your initial post looks like it was formatted by a chimpanzee. Also, considering some of your juvenile and insulting responses in this thread, I think you're a troll anyhow, so it's probably a moot point. Farewell, I doubt you'll be missed.

Every CRPG lives in the shadow of BG1, like it or not and it's not just a good game 'for it's time'.
It's the best game full stop. But I like DA:O because it re-treads alot of ground that made BG1 good and is overall a very good game. I can see why they called it a spirtual successor but the only Baldurs Gate game that is a spiritual succesor to DA2 is BG Dark Alliance for the PS2 hahaha

You don't get to decide what's the best game of all time the same way you don't get to decide what was the best book of all time. There is no such thing. And a bit like I wish fantasy books would break up with Tolkien, no matter how great he was, so I which BioWare leaves the past behind and creates the new game that will set the standard for the next 10 years. And then break the standard again,

It's a good game 'for it's time' but there have been plenty that have surpassed it. Planescape Torment, KOTOR, KOTOR2, Fallout 1 and 2 (not counting the trash that is Fallout 3), just to name a few possibilities. Obviously this is all in the eyes of the beholder, but to call the game 'best game' full stop is pushing it waaaay too far. Like, way too far. It was a good game, but it wasn't the best game of all time, nor will it ever be. There is no 'best game' of all time, because there will be games continually developed until the world explodes, time stops, the sun goes out (highly unlikely), or we kill ourselves in a nuclear war.

Then again, applying logic to this thread is like applying cream to a porcupine; it's just a really stupid idea, and you should feel bad for thinking of it.

Also, fun fact: auto-attack isn't fully implemented in consoles. So your 'mash x and see awesome kill' thing just sort of goes into 'fails logic forever' territory, concerning DA2. You know, since the combat is pretty much the same on PC while the console is different and responds to the console's strengths, rather than it's weaknesses...

I could probably go on for an hour naming off these things. But reasoning hath no place in a silly man's head, no? Irregardless, I give you a link. Iz gift.

You want a game that puts you unthinkingly into the role of a straight out badass so you can press the X button repeatedly maybe Y occasionally and act all badass, killing darkspawn and ogres like they aint no thing.

You're gonna love DA2
