Greetings, NWN Heroes.  I need some of your expert opinions & advice if you would be so kind to an old adventurer.  I was just hoping to get some feedback as to whether or not my NWN2 strategies & battle tactics are the norm...or if there are some other actions I should take to enrich my gaming experience.  So here goes...

I'm in Fihelis' Estate in Neverwinter.  It's still early game (I'm guessing), and my character is Level 8 - Rogue (4) Wizard (4).  My party currently consists of the Khelgar the Dwarf Fighter, Neeshka the Tiefling Rogue, Qara the Sorceress, and my little familiar Zele.  We have been holding our own against the bands of Thugs in the estate.  However, I fallen into a pattern as far as my battle strategy, not because I think it is the most creative, but so far it has been the most effective.  I wanted to know if this is the norm or is there anyhting I am missing or can do to enrich my NWN gaming experience.  It goes something very much like this:

I stage Khelgar at the midpoint of a hallway or an open area, with Neela (with her bow) & Qara (with her magic) remaining a safe distance behind. My character (Rogue 4, Wiz 4)  will scout ahead.  Once I locate an enemy group (or they locate me), I might hit them with a quick spell or alchemist fire, then I will draw them back towards the rest of my awaiting party.  Qara preps the hallway with several Walls of Fire and then gets ready to unleash some Fireballs.  Khelgar will rush forward to meet the oncoming Thugs and hopefully hold them at bay, while Neela & my main stay a safe distance away and pick-off the enemy with our bows.  Qara continues to cast damage spells at the remaining thugs while Khelgar, Neela, and my main finish them off.  Then we rest...and its off to the next group of baddies.

So my question...is this what most of the game is like for everyone else?  I understand different characters & classes have different abilities, and I am sure some are even more effective, but I'm kinda feeling as if I am falling into a battle strategy pattern that, although effective, is perhaps lacking  in "creativity" or "excitement."

Please provide me with some expert insight or feedback, but also please keep in mind that I am not as fast (nor as sharp & creative) as some of you younger gamers.  If you need any proof of this, then please consider that it took me almost a full year to complete NWN1 and the expansions.  LOL!

Thanks in advance for any feedback you can provide me.  Stay safe!

Not exactly but the strategy is somewhat similar. Generally you may as well control khelgar and have him take the front lines while the rest of your characters follow behind with quara and neeshka far away and your main char midway. Then if you encounter enemies Khelgar will take the front line and you won't have to run back. The other 3 chars at this point are free to do as they please, normally you'd want your rogue characters flanking the enemies and getting sneak attacks while khelgar tanks. It's also not a bad idea to buff khelgar just in case so he doesn't get squashed too fast.

The strategy you described is a common and effective strategy which utilizes most of the strengths of your characters.

I would also suggest that you explore the implementation of traps for Neeshka and your PC (since you are a thief).

A possible scenario could go like this:

Your PC and Neeshka could scout ahead using stealth or invisibility. When you discover an enemy, set some traps, then sneak up to them for a quick sneak attack, then run back to the rest of the party and continue with your previous strategy.

Also, as you gain wizard levels, experiment with your spells that disable your opponents. Stinking Cloud is excellent for this as are Cloud of Bewilderment, Web, Grease, Mass Slumber (on lower level opponents), Hold Person. A great 4th level spell is Everard's Black Tentacles which damages and paralyzes opponents. Very effective.

Have fun!

If you want to try different tactics and not get in a rut, change up your party from time to time.

In one of the expansions, there is a real big fighter who will accompany you.  To keep him from dominating the combats, I put him into Always Stealthy, Protect Master, and Parry mode.

There are other things you can do.  Try out different spells and so on.  The game does not have to be same/same.

To say the truth, I am not so refined with tactics. 90% of time, you have to open a door and face enemies. So, no sneak attack at all, since they are all in the room, waiting for you, and you just don't see what's hidden behind the door.

In those cases, what can you do? I am going to tell you what I do. And there's no big strategy at all. My PC is a cleric, and she's a really powerful character. She's the one who opens the doors and who enters the rooms. She is unbuffered at all. Usually, I cast Bless on the entire group and some shield spells over the most fragile companions (Qara, Neeshka and Elanee). With her, one or two other fighters. Khelgar is good, but I also like Bishop (using 2 swords) or Casavir.

My PC, plus one or two of the guys, enters the room and immediately points toward enemy-wizards or enemy-clerics. I just need a single strike, so the spell is spoiled. Meanwhile, other companions are entering the room, and they are separated from the enemies since me and the other tanks are fighting in the first combat line.

If the room is crowded, Qara (I usually bring her with me, not Sand) casts some damaging area spells, while the tank group finishes the enemies. If the room is not so crowded, usually the others stand there, using their bows or crossbows of whatever ranged weapon just to help!

Not a high strategy, I told you. But it usually works. And I don't need to rest after every battle that, in my opinion, is a bit incoherent. Where have you seen that you can start an 8-hour sleeping in the middle of a battle???

(and yes, in D&D, in order to recover your spell, you need an 8-hours rest!)

You can open a door from twenty feet back with a bow;  or Gust of Wind if you want to be dainty.

I simply don't need that. I have good tanks, so I use them :-)

You might also want to consider using terrain.

Use doors as pinch points to funnel the bad guys onto your fighter and keep the rest of the party behind him. If you are feeling brave sneak into the area behind your targets first then, once Kelgar firmly has thier attention, you can creep up and lend a hand.

A possible problem with your tactics might be that once the bad guys see you they continue to target you; moving round Kelgar. He can taunt but as a mage /rogue I doubt you are too big on HP yet so if they do stick with you as a target you could be in trouble.

At 8th level I suspect Neeshka out sneaks you and likely does more dammage close up, you could perhaps consider swapping with her so she does the scouting and you supply the backup with spells and archery (not so cool though). Traps can add some spice (as has been said) but I prefer to use terrain, close doors or stand at bends in the corridors to foil archers and ranged casters, that can gain you a round or so to work on their front men before you need to deal with the ranged attackers.

Another more spammy tactic is to send your rogue (you in this case) into the heart pf the bad guys then show them selves. the bad guys will swarm you at which point Quara opens with some fireballs or you yourself with a fireburst or two. the bads guys are not so bright in the OC.

Just some thoughts for you. You have a boss fight coming in which terrain may cause you a reload or two unless you keep a close eye on your party.

Cheers,

PJ
